Club Cross Country Championship Standings 2009/10

Last updated: Saturday, 5 December 2009
John Peake, Adrian Evans and Graham Wiggins braving the elements at Salisbury in the second Wessex Cross Country League fixture of the 2009/10 season.

The continuing theme of appalling weather was again in evidence as we travelled down to Salisbury – adn we were not to be disappointed! The very dark clouds looming on the horizon in the direction we were travelling did not augur well but it did nothing to dampen the spirits or banter of the four–men–in–a–car travelling down together. By the time we arrived there appeared to be a bit a of a lull in the general weather proceedings with even the odd tantalising hint of sunshine trying to break through.

This was all a ruse though, it wasn’t long before we felt the full force of the high winds and sheeting rain combined with an all too evident drop in temperature. Thankfully, Graham Wiggins, who had offered to bring his tent along, with the help of Dene Stringfellow managed to get the tent up just in time before we were caught by the first wave of torrential rain. John Peake and Adrian Evans were noticeable by their absence while the shelter was being constructed having made a sharp exit stage left – lightweights!

In the meantime John completed the not too onerous task going over to the race headquarters – about ten paces from our tent – to retrieve the team entry form. He appeared to be lacking a little confidence on the administrative side of things – bless! He did manage to complete the Harrier men’s team entry with a little encouragement from his fellow teammates! However, as Dick pointed out later we all got it wrong as there is no team entry form in the Wessex Cross Country League. It is, in fact, the team sheet to record the finishing order, doh!

By the time Helen, Paul and Dick arrived we were all happily sheltering from the brunt of the weather in the albeit confined space of the tent. It took a little while before Dick spotted us made some witty remark! Upon Dick’s enquiry as to whether or not we had filled out the team entry form John presented him with his work. Dick was not impressed! And proceeded to regale John with comments like "You plonker, Peake!", which his co–inhabitants of the tent fully endorsed! Dick proceeded to point out the error of John’s ways on the entry form front and, despite his protestations, John had to accept that he had made a severe cockup!

While we waited for our turn out in the mud we watched the early races which although reasonably competitive suffered from the low turnout as a result of the Wiltshire County Cross Country Championships being held on the same day. As time went on the weather seemed to be worsening if anything. Dene decided, in his questionable wisdom, that his best policy would be to leave his warmup to the first lap of the race. A decision he would later regret.

By the time the men lined up at the start it was bitterly cold and the rain had thankfully subsided to a drizzle. The vests tended to emphasize the goose–pimples and the starter wasn’t the flavour of the month as he held us for an inordinate amount time. However, once the gun released the runners on the their way the temperature ceased to be a issue. Dene immediately learnt the hard way that it pays to do a proper warmup as he watched most of the field including the rest of the Harrier team steadily draw away straight from the start. The leg muscles were just not responding and it did take practically a whole lap to get the circulation going.

The 4–lap course was slightly altered from previous years but no less demanding. Graham who had suffered a bout of illness earlier in the week clearly struggled as the race wore on, and as a consequence, Adrian, who borrowed a pair of spikes from Dene to run, took full advantage to forge ahead and consolidate his position as third Harrier. In the meantime Paul Jégou and John Peake were towards the head of the field.

With once again Dick photographically recording the proceedings for posterity Paul Jégou led the team home finishing in a respectable 3rd place ahead of John Peake who crossed the line in 8th position. Adrian Evans was third Harrier across the line in 16th position followed by Graham Wiggins one place adrift (17th) and Dene Stringfellow bringing up the rear in 20th place. You might be wondering at such a high finishing position for Dene given his recent performances – if they indeed merit that description – there were only 23 runners in the field. So normal service resumed!

On the way back the four–men–in–a–car decided to stop off for a little light refreshment and conviviality at Ye Olde Red Lion in Chieveley. Very pleasant it was too! Although it was a shame we didn’t get there until after they had stopped serving food, the menu looked excellent and Dene was starving as usual.

Well done to all our men and thanks to our supporters, Dick and Helen, for getting over to Salisbury. We look forward to seeing you all out there competing at the next Oxford Mail League event to be held at Culham Park on Sunday, 6 December.

Reports, photographs and results of any of your exploits throughout the season would be greatly appreciated by Dene Stringfellow and Paul Jégou – if you would like to see The Harrier continuing to flourish, you will need to continue supplying the material!

A reminder of the rules for the Junior Cross Country Championships:

  • In each championship series race 10 points are awarded to first Harrier in each age group, 8 for second, 6 for third, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – and if there are more than eight Harriers in a race everyone will score at least 1 point.
  • Championship series races are all the Oxford Mail Leagues, all the club Time Trials, plus the BB&O (– except for the U9s and U11s) and Oxfordshire Championships.
  • Everyone scores an additional point for participation in any extra (non–championship series) races and a 3 point bonus for county selection.
  • All school Year 4s (– and Year 3s if any younger brothers and sisters want to run timetrials) will count as Under 9s in our championship.
  • The runner with the most points in each age group at the end of the season will be rewarded with a trophy (although runners must have participated in at least 4 events to be eligible for the trophy).
  • Everyone who participates in at least 4 events will also receive a medal.

Below are the tables for the club’s Junior Cross Country Championships for 2009/10 showing the current standings of our competing runners.

Please also note, if you find or are aware of any error(s), please inform either Dene Stringfellow or Simon Atkin so the results table can be updated accordingly – provided that corroborating evidence is submitted, of course!
