top <Oxford Mail XC League Round 5 – Appleton Rutherford Laboratory, Harwell ~ Sunday, 3 March 2013
In the final Oxford Mail Cross Country League fixture there was a lot to play for, with a number of the younger athletes in contention for prizes and the men’s team attempting to hold onto their place in the first division following their promotion last season. This was a new course for the Oxford Mail Cross Country League which was, on the whole, well–received. Thanks go to Abingdon Amblers AC for having laid on the event and also to EMC Medical Services for stepping in at the last moment to provide cover at the fixture.
Four top ten performances were achieved on the day. Thomas Kelly produced the performance of the day by finishing in 5th place in the U15/U17 Boys race. That result was sufficent to earn Thomas 3rd place overall in the Under 17 final standings. Anna Kelly, Thomas’ younger sister, finished in 10th place in the U11 race which meant that Anna was placed equal 11th in the overall standings.
Josie Harrison produced another consistent performance to finish in 10th place in the U15/U17 Girls race. This ensured overall victory for Josie in the Under 17 Girls category. Jonny Cornish was likewise able to settle the overall U20 Men’s title in his favour by leading the men home in 9th place overall (1st U20 Men). In addition, Ben Claridge’s 12th place overall in the U15/17 Boys race was sufficient to claim second place the overall Under 15 Boys standings.
With the respect to the team results, the U15/17 Boys team produced the leading result of the day by finishing in 4th place. Our ladies showed up in force for the final fixture of the season with the Ladies “A” team finishing in 8th place on the day to earn 2nd place overall in Division 3. The Ladies “B” team finished in 6th place in Division 3 on the day. The Men’s team, suffering from injuries and absentees, managed an improved result compared to Round 4 with 6th place in Division 1 this time round. However, the effort was unfortunately not sufficient to prevent the team from finishing bottom of the division.

top <adidas Silverstone Half Marathon – Silverstone, Northamptonshire ~ Sunday, 3 March 2013
Windy conditions greeted the runners at the Silverstone Formula 1 circuit on Sunday. Nick Portsmouth was the single White Horse Harrier representing the club in this the 11th running of the event since the inaugural race in 2003. This year the race was started by Iwan Thomas, Olympic silver medallist and former European, Commonwealth and British record over 400m.
This was Nick’s first outing since graduating to the V50 category for men. The conditions conspired against Nick as he just failed to break the two–hour mark, recording a time of 02:00:54. The winner of the event was the defending champion, Scott Overall (Blackheath & Bromley Harriers) who crossed the line well clear of his nearest rivals in a time of 01:05:41. Sarah Ivory (unattached) secured the ladies’ title in a time of 01:22:34, knocking over two minutes off her personal best in doing so.

Suzie Sheehy was the sole Harrier representative in this year’s Goring 10k. With the majority of our competing athletes tackling the final Oxford Mail League cross country event at Harwell, Suzie took the opportunity to lower her personal best for the distance over a testing course at Goring. Suzie came home in a time of 00:48:17 (– chip time: 00:48:00 (PB)) to finish in 228th place overall and in doing so was 25th lady home and 16th in the Women’s Open category.

top <The Terminator – Pewsey, Wiltshire ~ Sunday, 24 February 2013
The Terminator is an event that now constitutes part of the inaugural WHH Multi–Terrain Club Championships. This year the Harriers were represented in the event by Robin Culshaw, Clare Hazell and Lucia Singer. Lucia, who has experienced some success in this event in the past, led our ladies across the line in 104th place overall to claim 3rd place in the women’s V35 category. With Clare and Robin finishing within a couple of minutes of each other in 260th and 284th places respectively, this was enough to ensure victory in the ladies team event.
The overall winner of the event was Charles Pennington (unattached) who finished some three and a half minutes clear of his closest rivals, Jonathan Gordon (Royal Engineers RC) and Gavin Pritchard (unattached) – 2nd and 3rd respectively, coming home in a time of 01:18:42. Niki Morgan (Chepstow Harriers) led the ladies home (54th place overall) in a time of 01:37:10 over a minute clear of Michell Pank (Alchester RC) and Jo Merrick (Somer AC) who claimed the 2nd and 3rd places on the podium respectively.

top <South of England Cross Country Championships – Parliament Hill Fields, London ~ Saturday, 16 February 2013
With all the recent poor weather leading to the cancellation of the original date for the South of England Cross Country Championships, it was left to our younger athletes to represent the club. Just four White Horse Harriers undertook the trip to Parliament Hill Fields this year.
On a positive note, the sunny conditions made a very welcome change. All four junior athletes performed well in their respective events, with the performance of the day coming from Josie Harrison, who finished in 34th place in the U17 Women’s category.

top <Chiltern Cross Country League Round 5 – Cottesloe School, Wing ~ Saturday, 9 February 2013
Dene Stringfellow was once again the sole representative for the Harriers at Wing in the final round of the Chiltern Cross Country League on Saturday, 9th February. The conditions were very heavy under foot, assuming you weren’t rendered immobile by the thick mud which at times approached knee–deep! Given the weather conditions in recent months it was hardly a surprise. It was very cold but at least there was no rain.
The course at Cottesloe School, Wing is fairly undulating and from start/finish area, just below the school, spectators enjoy a fantastic panorama of the whole course spread out below them.

top <Oxford Mail XC League Round 4 – Lawns Park, Swindon ~ Sunday, 3 February 2013
With only two of the seven members of the scoring team from round 3 available for round 4 of the Oxford Mail League, White Horse Harriers hopes of survival in Division 1 were severely dented at Swindon on Sunday. The Men’s team posted its worst ever total – 675 points – in the 25 or so years that they have been competing in the League. Indeed it could have been even worse had there not been less than 200 finishers in the men’s race.
Only the two Under 20s, Jonnie Cornish (14th) and Mitch Lomas (36th), finished in the top 50. The best Harrier performances on the day came from Josie Harrison (U17) and Ben Claridge (U15) who both finishing 2nd in their respective age groups.
It will require an outstanding performance in the final round if the Harriers Men are to retain their place in Division 1.

top <Oxford Mail XC League Round 3 incl. Oxfordshire Cross Country Championships – Shotover, Horspath, Oxford ~ Sunday, 6 January 2013
Sunday’s combined Oxford Mail League and County Championships was held in unseasonably mild weather conditions over the always testing Shotover course. Indeed the course was altered on the morning of the races as parts of it were deemed to be unsafe. The top performance by a White Horse Harrier on the day came from Ben Claridge with Ben claiming the Under 15 Boys County Championship title by securing 9th place in the Under 15/17 Boys race.
Another Harrier County Champion was Frances Briscoe in the Senior Ladies race running in the colours of her first claim club Coventry Godiva Harriers, scoring an impressive victory. Under 17 Josie Harrison finished in a well–deserved second place in her event while Ros Burgess won bronze in the Ladies V2 category.
The Harriers Men turned out their youngest ever team with five of the seven scorers under 20 years of age ’ the team only included one senior and one veteran man. First home was Jonnie Cornish but due to the rather byzantine rules the operate in UK Athletics he did not qualify to be County Champion as he will be 20 during this calendar year. The title instead went to his younger team mate Sam Marshall. The team total of 281 points resulted in 3rd place on the day.
