Club Cross Country Championship Standings 2009/10

The Oxfordshire Country Cross Country Championships took place on Sunday at the new venue at Middleton Cheney. The event, originally scheduled for the 10th of January, had been postponed owing to the severe weather conditions at that time. The difficulty of rearranging the championships at short notice into an already congested road and cross country schedule meant that it was bound to hae an impact on the turnout. This proved to be the case with the number of athletes attending the event significantly down on previous years.
Thankfully the weather conditions on the day were bright and sunny on the day and the course was pretty well clear of the recent snows. Despite everything the opportunity was there for our athletes to make the most of the situation and consequently impressive performances by our athletes lead to an impressive haul of medals and titles.
In only her second appearance of the season Emma Hazell finished in 28th place in the first race of the day – the Under 11 Girls event. Fiona Insley (The Manor Preparatory School) put paid to the unblemished Oxfordshire record of Nawal Elkirate (Radley AC) this season by taking the victory in a time of 4:59. In the Under 11 Boys event Charlie Harrison was our sole Harrier competitor just missed on a top three place finishing in 4th place behind the winner Thomas McClimont (Radley AC) who crossed the line in a time of 4:40.
Josephine Harrison and Ellie Taylor representing the Harriers in the Under 13 Girls race finished in 10th and 14th places respectively behind the race and title winner Beth Hawtin (Oxford City AC) who finished well clear of her rivals in a time of 11:00 dead. In the corresponding Under 13 Boys event Ben Claridge also just missed out on a top three place finishing in 5th position with Mungo Graham crossing the line in 11th place. The clear winner by over a minute was Christian Von Eitzen (Radley AC) who posted a time of 10:10.
Our sole representative in the Under 15 Girls race, Sophie Lloyd, produced a solid run to finish in 6th position. Lauren Hawtin (Oxford City AC) – matching the achievement of her younger sister earlier – took the title with a dominant perfomance crossing the line in a time of 14:48. The Under 15 Boys event witnessed our first top three finish of the day with Mitch Lomas producing an excellent performance to claim the bronze medal – just missing out on the silver medal by 4 seconds. Our other Harrier athlete in the race, Alastair Paterson, finished in 13th place. The Under 15 Boys title winner was Mathieu Marshall (Oxford City AC) who recorded a time of 16:33.
In the Under 17 Women event Bethan Murphy–Hand improved upon her performance in last year–s championships to finish in 4th place. The runaway victor in this event, securing the third title of the day for her family, was Melissa Hawtin who completely dominated the race crossing the line well over two minutes clear of her nearest rival. Anthony Holmes (5th) led our Harriers home in the Under 17 Men category with Alex Mills and James Ritter finishing in 14th and 15th positions respectively. The race was dominated by the athletes from Radley AC who secured the top three positions. Stuart Ferguson took the title in a time of 19:26.
In the Senior Women category Frances Briscoe, running under her first claim colours (Coventry Godiver Harriers), secured her fourth consecutive senior Oxfordshire county cross country title seeing off her nearest rivals, Helen Barnes (Headington Road Runners) and Lauren Barklie (Abingdon Amblers AC) finishing 2nd and 3rd places respectively, recording a time of 27:35.
The senior/veteran men’s race saw the Harriers significantly add to their medal tally with Chris Gillespie claiming the silver medal in second place behind the overall winner Darrell Bellinger (Oxford City AC) who secured the title with a time of 35:33. Next home for the Harriers was Paul Jégou (8th) followed by Tim Hughes (15th), who in so doing secured the V50 Men category title with a margin of victor over his nearest challenger of over two minutes. John Peake was next across the line to claim 18th place overall followed by Dan New who finished in 23rd position. It was then left to Graham Wiggins to secure the county team title for our men with his finish in 33rd place overall.
Well done to all our athletes with congratulations in particular going to Mitch Lomas, Frances Briscoe, Chris Gillespie, Tim Hughes and the senior men–s team of Chris Gillespie, Paul Jégou, Dan New and Graham Wiggins for their fine medal–winning performances. Many thanks again to all our parents and helpers for their help and support at Middleton Cheney. We look forward to seeing our Harriers out there competing in the Southern Cross Country Championships to be held at Parliament Hill on Saturday, 30 January.
Reports, photographs and results of any of your exploits throughout the season would be greatly appreciated by Dene Stringfellow and Paul Jégou – if you would like to see The Harrier continuing to flourish, you will need to continue supplying the material!
A reminder of the rules for the Junior Cross Country Championships:
- In each championship series race 10 points are awarded to first Harrier in each age group, 8 for second, 6 for third, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – and if there are more than eight Harriers in a race everyone will score at least 1 point.
- Championship series races are all the Oxford Mail Leagues, all the club Time Trials, plus the BB&O (– except for the U9s and U11s) and Oxfordshire Championships.
- Everyone scores an additional point for participation in any extra (non–championship series) races and a 3 point bonus for county selection.
- All school Year 4s (– and Year 3s if any younger brothers and sisters want to run timetrials) will count as Under 9s in our championship.
- The runner with the most points in each age group at the end of the season will be rewarded with a trophy (although runners must have participated in at least 4 events to be eligible for the trophy).
- Everyone who participates in at least 4 events will also receive a medal.
