Club Cross Country Championship Standings 2009/10

The cool but dry conditions on the traditionally tough and muddy course at Cottesloe School, Wing in Bedfordshire provided the athletes with a welcome change to the challenging conditions experienced generally this season. This was the final round of the 2009/10 Chiltern Cross Country League with our own Paul Jégou in the hunt for a podium finish in the Division 2 standings for the senior men.
Owing to a clash with a Level 1 Coaching Course at Banbury Dene Stringfellow was unable to make the trip to complete the full set of races this year. John Peake did however join Paul for his first outing in the Chiltern Cross Country League to ensure he secured much–needed points in his quest to retain the Club Veteran Men’s Cross Country title he won last year.
Paul Jégou lead our athletes home crossing the line in a creditable 24th position overall in the men’s race. Unfortunately, Paul was beaten by two athletes – Adam Searle (Stevenage) and Tim Wright (Banbury Harriers) – who he had beaten earlier in the season. This was a miscalculation which was to cost him the overall title in the Division 2 Senior Men standings as Paul had to settle for third place. John Peake only other representative on the day produced an impressive finish to reel in a number of his nearest competitors and cross the line in 83rd place!
The overall winner of the men’s race was Tom Comerford (Milton Keynes) who secured his victory with a margin of 23 seconds over his closest rival Steven Tuttle (Bedford & County AC) recording a time of 23:00 flat. Matt Salt (Dacorum & Tring AC) comfortably held off his nearest rivals to claim 3rd place. In winning the final race of the series Tom also secured the overall Division 1 Senior Men’s title. In the women’s race Nicola Sykes (Bedford & County AC) completed her third victory of the series finishing in a time of 22:53 ahead of her clubmate and rival Rebecca Newstead (Bedford & County AC) and Helen Barnes (Headington Road Runners) who had to settle for 2nd and 3rd places respectively. With a string of consistent performances in the series Nicola secured the overall Division 1 Senior Ladies’ title and also lead Bedford & County AC to the ladies’ team title.
Well done to our Harriers with particular congratulations going to Paul Jégou for his third place in the senior men’s Division 2 final standings. We look forward to seeing you all at the next club championship cross country fixture of the season scheduled for Saturday, 20 February at King Alfred’s Field, Wantage.
Reports, photographs and results of any of your exploits throughout the season would be greatly appreciated by Dene Stringfellow and Paul Jégou – if you would like to see The Harrier continuing to flourish, you will need to continue supplying the material!
A reminder of the rules for the Junior Cross Country Championships:
- In each championship series race 10 points are awarded to first Harrier in each age group, 8 for second, 6 for third, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – and if there are more than eight Harriers in a race everyone will score at least 1 point.
- Championship series races are all the Oxford Mail Leagues, all the club Time Trials, plus the BB&O (– except for the U9s and U11s) and Oxfordshire Championships.
- Everyone scores an additional point for participation in any extra (non–championship series) races and a 3 point bonus for county selection.
- All school Year 4s (– and Year 3s if any younger brothers and sisters want to run timetrials) will count as Under 9s in our championship.
- The runner with the most points in each age group at the end of the season will be rewarded with a trophy (although runners must have participated in at least 4 events to be eligible for the trophy).
- Everyone who participates in at least 4 events will also receive a medal.
