Club Cross Country Championship Standings 2008/9

Last updated: Tuesday, 25 November 2008

Clare Hazell and Helen Brackenbury in the thick of things at the 2009 Cirencester round of the Oxford Mail Cross Country League.

On a dull, overcast but not too chilly afternoon the Harriers turned out in force to compete in the annual BB&O Championships at Braywick Park, Maidenhead. There has been a marked improvement in the turnout at this event by our Harriers over the past two years which definitely bodes well for the future. We managed to turn out teams in the majority of the categories which was also very pleasing.

The conditions on the day over the relatively flat course were a little slippery under foot and apart from the slight drop down between the two halves of the course the inclines were gentle. Nothing really to cause our runners any real concern compared to the standard of the Oxford Mail League courses.

In the Under 13 Girls race Sophie Lloyd lead our girls home with another strong and consistent performance finishing in 6th place behind race winner R. Bourne (WSE&H AC). Josie Harrison was the next Harrier across the line (28th) followed in by Chloe Craze (36th) and Ellie Turner (38th). The Under 13 Girls team finished in 8th position behind overall winners Chiltern Harriers AC (A).

In the equivalent boys race solid performances by all our runners again saw our team finish in 8th position behind winners, this time, Reading AC (A). Matt Rose lead the team home finishing in 21st position closely followed by Zack Olliffe (22nd). Sam Liquorish was the next Harrier across the line in 28th place with Sam Cornick (39th) and Alex Brennan (40th) completing the list of our finishers. M. Goddard (Chiltern Harriers AC) won the Under 13 Boys race kicking clear of M. Seddon (Bracknell AC) in the final stages of the race.

For the Under 15 Girls race Bethan Murphy–Hand and Rachael Bedford were the White Horse Harriers AC representatives. Bethan produced another strong perfomance to finish in 13th place behind the Under 15 Girls winner B. Berger North (Bracknell AC). Rachael gave a determined display and produced a strong finish to cross the line in 34th position. The only disappointment was that the Harriers were unable to field enough runners to register a team score in this race which was won by Bracknell AC.

The Under 15 Boys team of Anthony Holmes, Alex Mills and James Ritter all turned in solid performances to secure 7th position ahead of local rivals Abingdon Amblers AC. Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow AC (A) were the victors ahead of Bracknell AC and their own (B) team. Alex lead the boys over the line finishing in 14th place behind the boy’s race winner Z. Seddon (Bracknell AC). The next of our runners over the finish line was James who finished in 23rd position three places ahead of Anthony who crossed the line in 26th place.

With no White Horse Harrier representatives in either of the Under 17 races, B. Myers (WSE&H AC) took the Under 17 Women’s title ahead of teammate H. Barefield and D. Seddon (Bracknell AC) while the Under 17 Men’s race was won by M. Bridger-Wilkinson (Newbury AC) who fibnished clear of A. Stewart (Chiltern Harriers AC) and E. Woolmer (WSE&H AC).

The Senior Women’s race was witness to determined performances by Sharon Bedford, Marie Craze and Carolyn Murphy, which saw our ladies team finish in 15th position behind the overall ladies team winners Reading Road Runners (A). Carolyn lead our ladies team home finishing in 35th position followed by Sharon who crossed the finishing line in 52nd position and Marie completing the team score finishing in 55th place. S. Gee (Reading RR) was the overall winner of the ladies race finishing ahead of Rachel Elliot (Team Kennet AC) and J. Copitch (also Reading RR).

The men’s event saw another strong turnout by our men with 10 runners entering the fray. Paul Jégou lead the way home for our men finishing in 14th position behind overall men’s winner Steve Kimber (WSE&H AC). Stuart Shilston was the next of our Harrier finishers to cross the line finishing in 30th position and in doing so secured 3rd place in the men’s veteran section. Chris Wilder followed Stuart home in 42nd place followed by Mark Godden (62nd), Hugh Owen (67th), Simon Leech (74th), Ian Brennan (80th) and Graham Wiggins (81st). Dene Stringfellow (84th) and Gareth Smith (85th) rounded off the list of our finishing competitors. The men’s team finished in 7th position, behind the overall team winners Bracknell AC, ahead of local rival clubs Abingdon Amblers AC and Kidlington RC.

In the ladies’ club championship Carolyn Murphy, having scored maximum points in both of her counting races so far, has now taken the overall lead ahead of Sharon Bedford and Marie Craze. The men’s club cross country championship standings show that Paul Jégou has consolidated his position at the head of the leader board with another maximum points haul in the lates round. Stuart Shilston has moved into second position ahead of Mark Godden in third place.

We look forward to seeing you all there at the next event enjoying the challenge. There’s nothing like bounding over the fields, through the cloying mud, into the wind and rain, and through the ditches and brooks! It’s all quite character building if nothing else!

Reports, photographs and results of any of your exploits throughout the season would be greatly appreciated by Dene Stringfellow and Paul Jégou – if you would like to see The Harrier continuing to flourish, you will need to continue supplying the material!
