Club Cross Country Championship Standings 2008/9

Probably the warmest and most pleasant running conditions of the season greeted the athletes at the final round of the Oxford Mail Cross Country League at Clanfield on Sunday. It certainly was a marked improvement over the conditions experienced at last year’s Clanfield Off–Road Relays held at the same venue. The course itself was largely dry and flat albeit rutted – the absence of a hill of any description being a novelty in the Oxford Mail Cross Country League!
While this event concluded this season’s Senior Men’s and Women’s Club Cross Country Championships it provided the penultimate round in the Junior Club Cross Country Championships. This final fixture of the Oxford Mail Cross Country League culminated in the White Horse Harriers picking up three individual trophies as well as a team second.
Continuing her good form in the Under 13 Girls, Sophie Lloyd was just beaten into 3rd place behind Lillie Bellamy of Swindon Harriers and Tory Mobley of Banbury. This gave Sophie joint second in the overall standings. Her performance combined with those of Josephine Harrison (14th) and Eleanor Turner (17th), helped the team to finish in equal second place on the day, and achieve a final fourth position overall.
Zack Olliffe produced another consistent performance to lead the Under 13 Boys home finishing in 8th place in a time of 8:18. With Matt Rose finishing 17th and Tom Froud having a great run to finish strongly in 19th the Under 13 Boys team finished 4th. Adam Pettifer in only his second race for the Harriers also put in a good performance to finish 23rd. The team fourth place on the day was good enough to secure a final position of 2nd place overall in the league.
In the Under 15 Boys category Anthony Holmes had another strong run to finish 9th in 17:07. Anthony’s improving form throughout the season ensured he finished 3rd in the overall league standings. Backed up by Alex Mills in 16th and Mitch Lomas (27th), showing great promise in his first outing in a Harriers vest, the team finished 5th. James Ritter crossed the line four places further back in 31st position.
Unfortunately the senior ladies had a disappointing day. Despite the solid individual performances of Ros Burgess (54th), Clare Hazell (63rd), Karen Froud (82nd) and Marie Craze (91st) the team could only manage 7th place on the day. This means that the women’s team finished 7th overall and will be relegated to Division 2 next season.
There was better news in the senior men’s team which, despite finishing 8th on the day, managed to hold on to 6th place overall to remain in Division 1. Individually, Job King finished 4th on the day and in so doing secured 3rd place overall in the individual standings. This was Job’ first trophy for several years.
Congratulations are in order for our prize–winning athletes – Sophie Lloyd 2nd overall in the Under 13 Girls, Anthony Holmes 3rd overall in the Under 15 Boys and Job King 3rd overall in the Senior Men. Not forgetting the Under 13 Boys team lead by Zack Olliffe and Matthew Rose who secured 2nd place overall.
This brings to a close the 2008/9 Senior Women’s and Men’s Club Cross Country Championships with the result that Carolyn Murphy held onto top spot in the ladies’ championship to claim both the overall title as well as the veteran ladies’ title despite not running at Clanfield. In the men’s championship Paul Jégou’s consistently strong performances throughout the season saw him reclaim the overall title he held a couple of seasons ago. The veteran men’s title went to John Peake whose consistency saw him hold off his challengers quite comfortably in the end.

Below are the tables for the club’s Junior Cross Country Championships for 2008/9 showing the current standings of our competing runners.
A reminder of the rules for the Junior Cross Country Championships:
- In each championship series race 10 points are awarded to first Harrier in each age group, 8 for second, 6 for third, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – and if there are more than eight Harriers in a race everyone will score at least 1 point.
- Championship series races are all the Oxford Mail Leagues, all the club timetrials, plus the BB&O and Oxfordshire Championships.
- Everyone scores an additional point for participation in any extra (non–championship series) races and a 3 point bonus for county selection.
- All school Year 4s (– and Year 3s if any younger brothers and sisters want to run timetrials) will count as Under 9s in our championship.
- The runner with the most points in each age group at the end of the season will be rewarded with a trophy (although runners must have participated in at least 4 events to be eligible for the trophy).
- Everyone who participates in at least 4 events will also receive a medal.
