Club Cross Country Championship Standings 2008/9

Competitors from White Horse Harriers took part in the SEAA Cross Country Championships at Hillingdon House Farm on 24 January 2009. The recent torrential rainfall ensured that conditions on the day were extremely wet under foot and would be sure to deteriorate as the events progressed. The men who would be last to go were in for a mud bath. The club tent was a welcome oasis in the sea of mud!
Despite the conditions, some of our Harriers managed good individual results with the best of the day going to Tim Traynor, who finished 20th in the U20 mens race in 30:21. Sophie Lloyd kept up her good form in the U13 girls to finish 41st in 14:08, followed home by Josie Harrison (139th). With only Bethan Murphy–Hand (107th) in the U15 girls, and her mother Carolyn Murphy (208th) in the senior women the Harriers failed to score a team result in any of the female age groups.
The boys U13 team of Matther Rose(181st), Alex Brennan (231st), Dom Banham (235th) and Tom Froud (238th) came home in 26th place overall. Anthony Holmes, running well to finish 87th in 16:46, led the U15 boys team home to 30th place. He was supported by Alex Mills (125th), James Ritter (182nd) and Alastair Paterson (224th). The senior men’s team who finished in 39th position, were led home by Paul Jégou (184th) in a time of 1:02:39.
Overall the runners found the conditions and longer distances a challenge, but gained valuable experience from the event particularly for our younger competitors. With the next round of the Oxford Mail Cross Country League due to take place next weekend at Cirencester our competitors will be hoping for more benign race conditions.
Reports, photographs and results of any of your exploits throughout the season would be greatly appreciated by Dene Stringfellow and Paul Jégou – if you would like to see The Harrier continuing to flourish, you will need to continue supplying the material!
Below are the tables for the club’s Junior Cross Country Championships for 2008/9 showing the current standings of our competing runners.
A reminder of the rules for the Junior Cross Country Championships:
- In each championship series race 10 points are awarded to first Harrier in each age group, 8 for second, 6 for third, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – and if there are more than eight Harriers in a race everyone will score at least 1 point.
- Championship series races are all the Oxford Mail Leagues, all the club timetrials, plus the BB&O and Oxfordshire Championships.
- Everyone scores an additional point for participation in any extra (non–championship series) races and a 3 point bonus for county selection.
- All school Year 4s (– and Year 3s if any younger brothers and sisters want to run timetrials) will count as Under 9s in our championship.
- The runner with the most points in each age group at the end of the season will be rewarded with a trophy (although runners must have participated in at least 4 events to be eligible for the trophy).
- Everyone who participates in at least 4 events will also receive a medal.
