Club Cross Country Championship Standings 2008/9

On a bitterly cold and for the most part overcast day at Cirencester Park a solid turnout of White Horse Harriers ensured our teams were well represented in the fourth and penultimate round of the Oxford Mail Cross Country League. Even the odd light flurry of snow did nothing dampen spirits of our competitors and how different were the conditions from those experienced just one week ago!
The first of our competitors to brave the elements were our Under 11 girls. In her first outing for the club Amy Juer finished in a highly creditable 20th place just holding off teammate Emma Rose (21st) by a couple of seconds. Eloise Graham crossed the line in 29th place with Emma Hazell completing the list of Harrier finishers in 39th position.
In the Under 11 boys event the Harriers were represented by Toby Thackray and Matthew Druce. Toby and Matthew produced solid performances to finish in 29th and 36th positions respectively.
In the Under 13 girls, Sophie Lloyd again ran well to finish 4th and consolidate her second position in the overall standings. Her performance along with that of Chloe Craze, who crossed the line in 16th position, helped the team to finish in 5th place.
Zack Olliffe (8th), led the Under 13 boys home with a time of 9:00. With Matt Rose (13th) and Toby Bellerby (18th) following Zack home, the boy’s team finished 2nd and remain 2nd in the Under 13 boy’s title hunt.
In the Under 15 boys category, Anthony Holmes and Alex Mills had another close–fought battle. This time Anthony finished 15th in 20:47, with Alex one place and 5 seconds behind. Alex is currently 3rd in the overall standings with Anthony 5 points behind in 5th. Together with James Ritter in 19th, the Under 15 boy’s A team finished 4th.
Frances Briscoe pulled out another good performance in the wintry conditions at Cirencester Park to consolidate her overall lead in the overall ladies’ standings. Frances secured 2nd place in 24:38, behind Melissa Hawtin of Oxford City, despite having raced in the Southern Inter County Cross Country Championships the previous day at Biggleswade. She now leads the standings by a single point and is in line to retain her title. Backed up by Helen Brackenbury (55th) and Clare Hazell (61st) the senior women’s team ended the day in 7th place.
With strong performances from Tim Traynor (4th), Job King (6th) and Paul Jégou (18th) the senior men’s team finished 5th in Division 1. The men’ team now lies in 4th position in the overall Division 1 standings with Job King handily placed in 3rd in the overall individual standings.
Reports, photographs and results of any of your exploits throughout the season would be greatly appreciated by Dene Stringfellow and Paul Jégou – if you would like to see The Harrier continuing to flourish, you will need to continue supplying the material!
Below are the tables for the club’s Junior Cross Country Championships for 2008/9 showing the current standings of our competing runners.
A reminder of the rules for the Junior Cross Country Championships:
- In each championship series race 10 points are awarded to first Harrier in each age group, 8 for second, 6 for third, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – and if there are more than eight Harriers in a race everyone will score at least 1 point.
- Championship series races are all the Oxford Mail Leagues, all the club timetrials, plus the BB&O and Oxfordshire Championships.
- Everyone scores an additional point for participation in any extra (non–championship series) races and a 3 point bonus for county selection.
- All school Year 4s (– and Year 3s if any younger brothers and sisters want to run timetrials) will count as Under 9s in our championship.
- The runner with the most points in each age group at the end of the season will be rewarded with a trophy (although runners must have participated in at least 4 events to be eligible for the trophy).
- Everyone who participates in at least 4 events will also receive a medal.
