Club Road Race Championship Standings 2009

The fifth race of the club 2009 Road Race Championships took place at Ewelme on Sunday with the Chiltern Chase 10k multi–terrain event providing the venue for this round. Despite the weather looking ominous overnight and during the early part of the morning things definitely took a turn for the better as the the start of the race approached. A glint of blue sky appeared in the south–west and proceeded to force all the black clouds away to the north–east to produce almost ideal conditions for the main 10k race. Admittedly, the dramatic turnaround in the weather did not necessarily suit all the competitors though.

This was an event that was once again well–supported by our runners with no less than 14 of members turning up to take part. With Simon Atkin and Sarah Baker – both defending champions from last season – presently leading the standings their rivals needed to turn in some good performances to try to claw back some of the deficit.

The overall race winner this year was Steven Frear (Woodstock Harriers) who finished in a course record time of 0:32:49 ahead of Chris Dettmar (Headington Roadrunners) and our own Paul Jégou who crossed the line in third place. The ladies were lead home by Rachael Elliott (Team Kennet) who posted a time of 0:38:54 in finishing 13th overall ahead of Lesley Whiley (Reading Road Runners) – 15th overall – and Belinda Tull (Reading Road Runners) – 35th overall – who were the 2nd and 3rd ladies to complete the course.

With twelve of our men competing in this event the needle and jibing were clearly in evidence both the off. In the end Paul Jégou was unable to repeat his victory of two seasons ago but did manage to finish in 3rd place crossing the line in a time of 0:36:22. Stuart Shilston was our next athlete across the line finishing in 9th position overall just holding off Jason Cooke who finished in 11th place. Simon Leech lead the rest of our runners home finishing in 23rd position, followed by John Peake (25th), Graham Wiggins (39th), Simon Atkin (60th), Adrian Evans (69th), Roger Turnbull (105th) and Jeremy Smeddle (108th). Dene Stringfellow (153rd) and Nick Portsmouth (245th) completed the lineup of our male competitors.

Unfortunately, the ladies were once again conspicuous by their absence. (Was it something we said?!) This year the Harriers were represented by Clare Hazell who was our first lady home recording a time of 0:50:34 to finish in 166th position overall. Catherine Wainwright, just on her way back from injury, finished in 212th position overall with Karen Froud crossing the line in 275th place overall to complete Harrier lady finishers.

The upshot of Sunday’s results means that Simon Atkin has had his lead in the men’s championship standings reduced to a single point. (Please Note: The points for the marathon results will be allocated at the end of the season when all the results have been collected.) In the ladies’ championship standings Clare Hazell has leap–frogged Sarah Baker, in her absence, to take over the lead at the top.

The next event in the club road race championship calendar is the Thame 10k. We look forward to seeing you there.
