Club Road Race Championship Standings 2009

Last updated: Friday, 3 July, 2009
Terry Coakley about to hand over to Stephen Casey at end of his leg in the 2009 Ridgeway Relay at South Stoke on Sunday, 21 June 2009.

What a scorcher! The sixth event of the club 2009 Road Race Championships took place at Thame on Sunday with not a cloud visible in the sky. The Thame 10k provided our competitors with an interesting and mildly undulating course with the route taking the runners out through the town centre to Towersey and then back along the Phoenix Trail to the finish. If you didn’t like running in the heat you were definitely going to struggle.

The Harriers produced another strong turnout with nine men presenting themselves at the start. Unfortunately, the same could not be said for the ladies with just one competitor turning out for the club. (Please let Dene Stringfellow know if transport is an issue as shared lifts to and from events can be arranged).

The overall race winner of this year’s event was Stephen Male (Oxford City AC) who crossed the finish line in a time of 0:33:54. Stephen finished just ahead of Nigel Marley (Coventry Godiva) and James Eve (Headington Roadrunners) who finished in second and third places respectively. Just 9 seconds separated the first two runners at the finish. The first lady to cross the line was Jane Preen (Milton Keynes) who recorded a time of 0:38:05 to finish in 26th place overall. Tracy Galbraith (Unattached) – 39th overall – and Sarah Rendell (Unattached) – 69th overall – finished behind Jane to take 2nd and 3rd places respectively.

The jovial banter before the start couldn’t hide some of the concerns about the severely warm conditions. But once the race got under way the support both around the course and at the finish provided a lift to everyone. Paul Jégou produced a strong performance to claim 4th position overall just 8 seconds behind the third place finisher. Dan Peace was our next athlete across the finish line with another solid performance in 32nd position overall finishing ahead of John Peake who just failed to break 40 minutes in crossing the line in 56th place. Simon Leech (73rd) completed the course next followed by Dan New (83rd), Adrian Evans (132nd), Graham Wiggins (137th), Simon Atkin (217th), with Dene Stringfellow (271st) bringing up the rear – as usual!

Again the Harriers were represented by Clare Hazell, our sole lady competitor in the event. Clare posted a time of 0:52:09 to finish in 338th position overall. Come on, ladies! If you don’t get your running shoes on soon you will be handing the championship to Clare on a plate!

The water station was a welcome sight for all at the finish – some of us could have done with a barrel! However, the odd localised shower did helped to cool things down a bit though!

Following the outcome of Sunday’s event Paul Jégou now heads the men’s championship standings having leap–frogged Simon Atkin. In the ladies’ championship standings Clare Hazell has extended her lead over her rivals in their absence.

(Please Note: The points for the marathon results will be allocated at the end of the season when all the results have been collected.

The next event in the club road race championship calendar is the Adderbury Half Marathon. We look forward to seeing you all there.

Below is the table for the White Horse Harriers’ men’s road race championship for 2009 after the sixth event of the season held at Thame on Sunday, 28 June.

Please also note, if you find or are aware of any error(s), please inform either Dene Stringfellow or Simon Atkin so the results tables can be updated accordingly – provided there is corroborating evidence, of course!
