Club Road Race Championship Standings 2009

Last updated: Friday, 17 July, 2009
Clare Hazell competing in the Oxford Mail Cross Country League meeting held at Banbury on Sunday, 4 January 2009.

A small but select band of intrepid Harriers ventured forth to sample the delights of the Adderbury countryside by competing in the Adderbury Half Marathon on Saturday. This was the second running of the event since its inception last year. This event constituted the seventh round of the White Horse Harriers’ 2009 Club Road Race Championships. The half marathon took place along with a 10k, Walk and Fun Run, coinciding with the Adderbury village fete, starting and finishing at the Lucy Placketts Playing Field in the centre of the village.

Simon Leech had demonstrated his keenness to compete in this race by entering the event twice!! Something Simon was desperately trying to play down in advance of the race. Having checked out the course profile just that morning Dene Stringfellow could have done without the early morning wakeup call having worked into the early hours that morning. Course profiles as a rule are deceptive by their nature but this one did not hide the fact that, given this was a multi–terrain event, there seemed to be a lot of up and down! Thankfully the weather was on our side on Saturday with the conditions generally overcast and cool – a real blessing following the previous round at Thame.

Dan Peace was our leading athlete across the line with an excellent performance to claim 3rd position overall. This wasn’t far off Dan’s personal best for the distance which bodes well for when he next comes across a flat course! John Peake, who was out to prove he can run half marathons sensibly without trying improve his 10k pb in the middle of a race, held off Simon Leech claiming 15th position overall. Simon came home in 21st place overall with Graham ‘Chunky’ Wiggins crossing the line next in 54th place. Dene Stringfellow managed to achieve 82nd place despite fading over the last mile or so and having been passed by at least 6 other competitors in the last half mile!

Again the ever–present Clare Hazell was the Harriers’ sole representative. Clare posted a time of 1:57:24 to finish in 94th position overall. Well done to Clare, there are signs of definite improvement in her form and performances. Ladies, you are conspicuous by your absence! If you don’t get your running shoes on soon you will be handing the championship to Clare on a plate!

In a repeat performance of last year the overall race winner Russell Forsbrook (Cheltenham Harriers) crossed the finish line over two and a half minutes clear of his nearest rival recording a time of 1:21:04. This was a significant improvement over last year’s time – last year’s times were impacted largely due to a bridge incident on the day of the race causing an additional loop of some 4 miles to bring the runners back on course! The second runner home was Gary Harris (Headington RoadRunners) with our own Dan Peace crossing the line to clinch 3rd place to crown an excellent performance.

The ladies were lead across the line by Jude Craft (Headington RoadRunners) who produced a strong performance by recording a time of 1:29:38 to complete the course in 4th place overall. Esme McLelland (Bristol & West AC) finished in 12th place overall to secure 2nd position with Jude’s teammate Sally Howard (Headington RoadRunners) coming home in 16th overall to take 3rd place in the ladies’ event.

Following Saturday’s results Simon Leech has joined Paul Jégou at the top of the the men’s championship standings having moved ahead of Simon Atkin in his absence. John Peake has narrowed the gap on third–placed Simon Atkin to a mere three points while Dan Peace moves ahead of Jason Cooke (– conspicuous by his absence once again!) to take over fifth place in the standings. Graham Wiggins is now in joint sixth place along with Jason Cooke. Meanwhile Dene Stringfellow lumbers steadily towards mid–table mediocrity with his biggest points haul of the season moving into ninth place!

Clare Hazell has further extended her lead in the ladies’ championship standings. Will this be the largest margin of victory in the history of the club’ Road Race Championships, I ask myself?

This event was well–organised and marshalled with the young water helpers a very welcome sight around the course. The doughnuts at the finish were a great added bonus as were the shower and changing facilities! It was a shame we missed out on a drink in the bar but being a Saturday everyone had places to go and people to see!

(Please Note: The points for the marathon results will be allocated at the end of the season when all the results have been collected.

The next event in the club road race championship calendar is the Hornton Classic. We look forward to seeing you all there.

Below is the table for the White Horse Harriers’ men’s road race championship for 2009 after the seventh event of the season held at Adderbury on Saturday, 11 July.

Please also note, if you find or are aware of any error(s), please inform either Dene Stringfellow or Simon Atkin so the results tables can be updated accordingly – provided there is corroborating evidence, of course!
