Club Road Race Championship Standings 2009

Don’t be fooled – Hornton is by no stretch of the imagination flat! The Harriers congregated beside the Hornton Sports Pavilion for the eighth round of our Club Road Race Championships on the evening of Saturday, 18 July had been warned that there was an area of the course somewhat under water following the recent downpours. However, those who had experienced the event the previous year were just glad that it wasn’t hot. The conditions were pretty well ideal albeit a litte cool.

As we waited at the start we became aware of the fact that John Peake in a moment of abject forgetfulness had arrived at the start blissfully unaware that he had forgotten his race number. The rest of us were loath to interrupt his oblivion!! Sadly for us one of the runners from the local club Cherwell Runners & Joggers pointed out his aberration. This was a shame as it could have lead to an evening of memorable controversy and jovial banter.

Paul Jégou confirmed his recent form with a spirited performance recording a time of 34:30 to pick up 4th place overall just 14 seconds adrift of the third place finisher. Jason Cooke was our next finisher four places further back in 8th position overall over a minute behind. John Peake – with his number attached – secured 23rd position ahead of Simon Leech (38th) and Graham Wiggins (58th). The ever–consistent Dene Stringfellow brought up the rear, as usual, finishing in 76th place overall.

Nigel Marley (Coventry Godiva Harriers) lead the men across the line to take the overall race victory with a clear winning margin of over 40 seconds to his nearest rival recording a time of 33:09. This was a clear improvement on Nigel’s performance in the previous year’s event where he finished in 3rd position overall. Paul Fernandez (Abingdon Amblers) finished next with Gary Harris (Headington RoadRunners) holding off our own Paul Jégou to secure 3rd place overall.

The ladies were lead home by three V35 category competitors with Sarah Rendell (Alchester R&AC) securing victory in a time of 40:18. Sarah finished in 37th position overall. Her closest rival, Susan Turner (Headington RoadRunners), held off teammate Adrienne Hopkins (Headington RoadRunners) to claim second place finishing in 46th place overall. Adrienne finished four places further back overall.

Following results on Saturday evening Paul Jégou has consolidated his lead at the top of the men’s championship standings. Simon Leech remains in second place with John Peake leap–frogging Simon Atkin into third place trailing Simon Leech by just 8 points despite having competed in one fewer event. Jason Cooke and Graham Wiggins both move ahead of Dan Peace into 5th and 6th positions respectively. While Dene Stringfellow picked up more valuable points to move into eighth place!

Sadly, we had no lady representatives turning out for this round of the club championships. Therefore the championship standings remain unaltered from the previous round with Clare Hazell out in front at the head of the leaderboard.

This event was a small, well–organised and friendly event which has much to recommend it. Admittedly the course was quite tough, but the bring–your–own barbecue was a great success. Some of us also managed to fit in a quick stop for a pint at one of the excellent local hostelries on the way back!

(Please Note: The points for the marathon results will be allocated at the end of the season when all the results have been collected.

The next event in the club road race championship calendar is the fourth round of the Mota–vation Series to be held at Chipping Norton. We look forward to seeing you all there.

Below is the table for the White Horse Harriers’ men’s road race championship for 2009 after the eighth event of the season held at Hornton on Saturday, 18 July.

Please also note, if you find or are aware of any error(s), please inform either Dene Stringfellow or Simon Atkin so the results tables can be updated accordingly – provided there is corroborating evidence, of course!
