Club Road Race Championship Standings 2009

Last updated: Monday, 10 August, 2009
Paul Jegou outsprinting John Atyeo at the end of the Cleevewold 14 held at Postlip Hall near Winchcombe, Gloucestershire on Sunday, 29 March 2009.

A day of torrential downpours did not augur well for race conditions at the fourth round of the Mota–vation Series held at Chipping Norton on Thursday evening, 6 August. This event constituted the ninth round of the White Horse Harriers’ Club Road Race Championships. This proved to be the case as the blustery and wet conditions did little to encourage the assembled band of athletes.

Tim Traynor making his first appearance in a club road race championship event of the season produced a strong performance in the less than ideal conditions to cross the line in 3rd place overall. Paul Jégou turned in another solid performance to consolidate his position at the top of the leaderboard in the club championships finishing in 17th position overall over half a minute ahead of Jason Cooke who crossed the line in 23rd place.

John Peake was the next Harrier to cross the finish line coming home in 45th position overall, with Mark Godden outpacing Adrian Evans at the finish to claim 80th and 82nd places overall respectively. Once again Clare Hazell was our sole representative for the ladies. Clare crossed the line in 148th position overall, thereby extending her lead in the ladies’ Club Road Race Championship standings.

The overall winner of this year’s event was Mathew Ashton (Aldershot, Farnham & District AC) who recorded a time of 21:12 comfortably seeing off his nearest rivals. Stephen Male (Oxford City AC) held off the challenge of our own Tim Traynor to secure second place by almost 20 seconds.

Helen Barnes (Headington RoadRunners) lead the ladies home recording a time of 24:50 to finish in 35th position overall. Her club compatriot Jude Craft secured 2nd place finishing in 42nd position overall, with clubmate Diane Moore making it a clean sweep for the Headington RoadRunners’ ladies picking up 3rd place by finishing in 52nd place overall.

Following Thursday evening’s results Paul Jégou has increased his lead in the men’s overall championship standings to 13 points. John Peake has taken the opportunity, in the absence of Simon Leech, to move into second place. Jason Cooke has now moved above Simon Atkin into fourth place. Adrian Evans has moved back up to eighth in the absence of Dene Stringfellow, while Mark Godden has climbed to eleventh position in the standings.

Clare Hazell has now stretched her lead at the top of the ladies’ standings to a virtually unassailable 71 points! Clare is now virtually assured of her first Club Road Race Championship title.

After the event some of our competitors took the opportunity to enjoy a well–earned drink at the bar to discuss what might have been had the conditions been more favourable!

(Please Note: The points for the marathon results will be allocated at the end of the season when all the results have been collected.

The next event in the club road race championship calendar is the Cotswold Classic 10–mile road race to be held at Witney on Sunday, 13 September. We look forward to seeing you all there.

Below is the table for the White Horse Harriers’ men’s road race championship for 2009 after the ninth event of the season held at Chipping Norton on Thursday, 6 August.

Please also note, if you find or are aware of any error(s), please inform either Dene Stringfellow or Simon Atkin so the results tables can be updated accordingly – provided there is corroborating evidence, of course!
