Club Road Race Championship Standings 2009

The tenth round of the Club Road Race Championships took place on the roads just to north of Witney on Sunday. With the weather providing ideal race conditions there were no excuses. The course is undulating to put it mildly, but despite that it is very scenic along the quiet country roads.

This year we had six representatives flying the flag for the White Horse Harriers – Jason Cooke, Paul Jégou, Simon Leech, John Peake, Nick Portsmouth and Graham Wiggins – sadly no ladies again though! What do we need to do to encourage you?!

Paul Jégou has been in a rich vein of form over recent months and once again was the lead Harrier to cross the finish claiming second place less than a minute behind the overall winner James Bolton (Woodstock Harriers). This result assures that Paul will retain the men’s road race title having only been beten on two occasions this season by another Harrier in the championship events.

Jason Cooke was the next Harrier over the line finishing in 24th position overall again having to give best to Paul. John Peake crossed the line in 44th position overall to virtually assure himself of the veteran’s raod race title by seeing off the challenge of his closest rival Simon Leech who finished four places further back.

Graham Wiggins produced another consistent performance to record a personal best in crossing the line in a time of 1:13:54 to claim 76th place overall. Nick Portsmouth rounded off the Harrier performances by crossing the line in 192nd place and in doing so earned more valuable points in the championship race.

As mentioned earlier Paul Jégou has retained the men’s overall road race title and John Peake is virtually assured of the veteran men’s road race title provided he makes an appearance at either of the final two events in the championship calendar. Without having to put in an appearance Clare Hazell has claimed both the overall and veteran ladies’ road race title.

(Please Note: The points for the marathon results will be allocated at the end of the season when all the results have been collected.

The next event in the club road race championship calendar is the Longworth 10k road race to be held at Longworth on Sunday, 20 September. We look forward to seeing you all there.

Below is the table for the White Horse Harriers’ men’s road race championship for 2009 after the tenth event of the season held at Witney on Sunday, 13 September.

Please also note, if you find or are aware of any error(s), please inform either Dene Stringfellow or Simon Atkin so the results tables can be updated accordingly – provided there is corroborating evidence, of course!
