Club Road Race Championship Standings 2009

Last updated: Thursday, 24 September, 2009
John Peake on his way through the Oxford College parks in the Teddy Hall Relays held at Iffley Road, Oxford on Wednesday, 11 March 2009.

The penultimate round of the Club Road Race Championships took place at Longworth on Sunday. There was still an outside chance that Simon Leech might be able to wrest the veteran men’s road race title from John Peake so all was to play for. With the sun shining down on the runners it was going to be a competitive affair.

Ros Burgess was running in her first club championship event of the season and with no other ladies on show was virtually guaranteed of a maximum points haul – provided, of course, that she got round in one piece! Paul Jégou – club champion elect – was running in his second event in two days having finished 5th in the Woodstock 12 at Blenheim Palace the previous day.

Paul Jégou crowned his weekend with an excellent perfomance to take the overall race victory by recording a time of 37:07 seeing off his closest rivals Simon Fisher (Abingdon Amblers) and Thomas Watkins (Abingdon School). John Peake who finished in 9th place overall was the first veteran male across the line and in doing so captured the veteran men’s club road race title seeing off the challenge of Simon Leech who finished 2 places further back, the second veteran male across line.

Adrian Evans was the next Harrier over the line securing a highly creditable 20th place ahead of Graham Wiggins (of stampeding bovines fame!) who finished in 27th position overall. Ros Burgess managed 49th place in her first championship outing of the season with Peter Bainbridge rounding off the Harrier performances also in his first championship event of the season finishing in 77th position.

Congratulations go to Paul Jégou and John Peake on their fine performances.

(Please Note: The points for the marathon results will be allocated at the end of the season when all the results have been collected.

The final event of the club road race championship calendar is the Hanney 5 road race to be held at East Hanney on Sunday, 11 October. We look forward to seeing you all there and followed by an end–of̵season celebration in the Black Horse afterwards, I’m sure!

Below is the table for the White Horse Harriers’ men’s road race championship for 2009 after the eleventh event of the season held at Longworth on Sunday, 20 September.
