Club Road Race Championship Standings 2010

Dene Stringfellow and Jeremy Smeddle settled in the main pack at the beginning of the Banbury 15 on Sunday, 14 March 2010.

The first round of the 2010 Club Road Race Championships took place at Spiceball Park, Banbury on Sunday, 14 March providing our athletes an opportunity to bag championship points in this early season event which has become a traditional fixture in our road race calendar and to shake off those winter blues. A day of sunshine, if not warmth, greeted the athletes for this event which made a very welcome change from the conditions experienced over the past few months.

After all the pre–Championship posturing and bravado it was time to get out there and perform. It was clear that some our number were out to prove a point or two! And as soon as the gun sent the athletes on their way our main protagonists quickly gravitated towards the head of the field. Some of us preferred to settle into the pack and work our way into the race – Dene Stringfellow had been suffering from a nasty cold of the previous couple of days and had not been sure if he would have been fit to run!

The course, which is effectively an outward couple of miles to just beyond the M40 motorway followed by an 11–mile loop through the undulating North Oxfordshire countryside before retracing its steps back to the start/finish area, provides a stiff challenge to all competitors and is particularly useful for those preparing for the London Marathon in April. With the sun shining down on the athletes the course was presented in one of its more benign guises as there were only one or two places in which the runners were exposed to a cold, sharp wind. Otherwise there were moments particulary down in the dips where the competitors enjoyed conditions of practically summery warmth!

Another consistent performance saw Paul Jégou lead our Harriers across the line to finish in 17th position overall and in doing so set the early pace in the men’s title race. Jason ‘The Pretender’ Cooke was our next Harrier over the line having to settle for 19th position overall just two places adrift of our leading runner. John Peake just failed in his attempt to stay with our leading pair, however after falling back just after the 5–mile mark he recovered to finish in a very creditable 34th place overall.

Graham Wiggins, who as always set off at conservative pace from the back of the field and was aiming for a sub-2–hour time narrowly failed to do so, finished ahead of the remaining Harriers to secure 197th place overall. A late surge saw Dene Stringfellow draw ahead of Jeremy Smeddle and open a decisive gap to cross the line in 224th place. Jeremy Smeddle completed the lineup of our finishers completing the course in 240th position and closing in on his target of completing 50 half marathons before his 50th birthday!

The overall winner of this year’s race was Sullivan Smith (Swansea Harriers AC) who shattered the course record by well over a minute finishing comfortably clear of his closest rivals in a time of 1:21:44. Mike Burrett (Leeds City AC) who was the next athlete home crossing the line in 2nd place with in excess of a four and a half minute gap over the 3rd placed athlete Anipam Das (Oxford University). Sophie Carter (Kidlington R&AC) was the first female finisher home recording a time of 1:41:24 finishing in 44th position overall. Rebecca Smith (Northbrook AC) finished just two places adrift in 46th position overall to claim 2nd place on the ladies’ podium. Jasmin Lowdon (Unattached) was the third lady across the line finishing ten places adrift in 56th position.

Congratulations go to Paul Jégou for laying down his early season marker in the defence of his club road race crown. Well done also to our other athletes for their performances.

Unfortunately, it was a shame, but none of our ladies made the journey north to compete on Sunday. Hopefully, we will see some of you competing in the next round of the Club Championships which will be the first of the 2010 Mota–vation Series fixtures scheduled for Thursday, 6 May at Charlton–on–Otmoor.

(Please Note: The points for the marathon results will be included in the final championship standings at the end of the season. In the meantime the marathon results will be included in the marathon rankings tables below each of the championship standings tables.

We hope you have enjoyed the road race championship season this year. If you have any comments or feedback please do not hesitate to contact Dene Stringfellow . We look forward to seeing you all out at the cross country fixtures over the winter!

Below is the table for the White Horse Harriers’ men’s road race championship for 2009 after the final event in the club road race calendar held at Tilsley Park, Abingdon on Sunday, 18 October.
