Club Road Race Championship Standings 2010

Last updated: Monday, 27 September, 2010 Blenheim Palace the venue for the 2010 Woodstock 12 held on Saturday, 18 September.

The penultimate round of the 2010 Club Road Race Championships took place at Blenheim Palace, Woodstock on Saturday, 18 September with still all to play for in the men’s championship title race. The sunny weather on the day provided near perfect race conditions so there could be no excuses! Although the undulating 3–lap course round the parklands does tend to take its toll.

The Harriers representing the club on this occasion were Jason Cooke, Paul Jégou, Jan McCabe, Dan Peace, Ian Rees, Jeremy Smeddle and Graham Wiggins. You’ll notice the absence of our regular attender John ‘Peakey’ Peake who managed to injure himself recently and continued trying to race. Some people never learn!

The men’s championship standings couldn't have been closer going into this race with Jason leading Paul by 26 points ahead of the race having already banked eight counting scores, but with Paul having registered just six counting scores. So, as you can imagine, the tension at the start would have been palpable!

Paul Jégou lead our Harriers home with another consistent performance which has been the hallmark of his season to finish in 5th position overall and in doing so closed the gap in the men’s club title race significantly. This result now leaves Paul in pole position going into the final at the Hanney 5 next month. Our next Harrier across the line was Dan Peace, in his first appearance in the road championship series this season, securing 25th place. Dan was followed home by Graham Wiggins (89th), Ian Rees (95th), Jeremy Smeddle (117th) and Jan McCabe (150th).

Unfortunately for Jason Cooke a bout of sickness was to deprive ‘The Pretender’ of a finish. This has surely handed the initiative to Paul Jégou going into the final race of the club champsionship series. All Paul now needs to do is ensure he even if Jason does decide to run in the Abingdon Marathon. So, a crucial day in the title chase has swung the momentum in Paul’s favour!

With respect to our ladies, Jan McCabe was again the sole representative for the Harriers. Having said that, Jan made the most of her opportunity to rack up maximum points and bank her eight counting scores for the season. This provides Jan with an unassailable lead at the head of the ladies’ championship leader board and thus ensures her of this year’ club road race title.

The overall winner of this year’s event was John Morrisey (Wigan Phoenix). John held off a strong local challenge from Oxfordshire–based athletes to record his victory in a time of 01:08:06. Stephen Male (Oxford City AC) crossed the line comfortably clear of Paul Ferandez (Abingdon Amblers) to claim the runners up position.

In the case of the ladies Jennifer McBain (Alchester RC) lead the way home securing her victory in a time of 01:18:42 to finish in 21st place overall, comfortably clear of her nearest rivals. Sarah Quantrill (Chiltern Harriers) secured the second podium spot crossing the line to finish in 32nd place overall with Charlotte Steptoe (Vale of Aylesbury) a further six places adrift claiming the final place on the podium.

Congratulations to all our other athletes on their performances. The full race results for the Woodtsock 12 along with the other 2010 Club Championship events are available to view here.
