top < Hooky Christmas Canter – Hook Norton, Oxon ~ Sunday, 18 December 2011

The marvellous facilities of the Hook Norton Sports & Social Club were again the venue for the Hooky Christmas Canter.

Paul Jégou, one of White Horse Harriers most active of competitors, brought his 2011 season to a successful conclusion with a win over the 7ish mile multi–terrain course that constitutes this popular pre–Christmas race. In cold but sunny conditions Paul took the lead as the race started, firstly on road and then onto his favoured terrain of mud and undulations, maintaining his lead through to the finish, recording a time of 42:39.

James Bolton (Woodstock Harriers) finished in 2nd followed home by Gary Crone (unnattached) in 3rd place. Samantha Usher (Alchester Running Club) was 1st Lady home in 48:51.

In winning this race Paul bagged himself a fine Christmas Pudding weighing in at a handsome 1lb! Rumours are that Dene Stringfellow has already started an intensive year long training plan in order to win next years pudding! All bets are off, it will be a one–(White)Horse race!

A chilly, overcast and blustery day greeted the Harrier representatives that travelled to Little Chesterton near Bicester for the Andy Reading 10k.

This course is flat and fast and, in favourable conditions, will produce some very creditable times. Plaudits go to Steve Marshall on his excellent 8th place in an impressive time of 34:30.

top < Swindon Throws Pentathlon – Swindon ~ Sunday, 11 December 2011

Dick Jégou writes: •Throws Pentathlons are a bit like London buses, none for ages then three come along at once. The choice was easy, Swindon over events at Ewell and Derby, much cheaper to get there!

In sunny but very cold conditions the circles were just frosty enough to make the first few throws interesting. Despite looking like a Michelin Man I had a very satisfactory series of throws, most of them further than I had any right to expect.‣

The second of the Club Time Trials for the 2011/2012 cross country season took place on Saturday.

As is customary we would like to thank the parents and everyone who helped on the evening for their support and assistance. Without this support and enthusiasm we would struggle to hold these events.

The number of runners competing was reduced in number but certainly didn’t lack in quality!

top < Oxford Mail Cross Country League Round 2 – Culham, Oxon ~ Sunday, 4 December 2011

The second round of this season’s Oxford Mail Cross Country League took place at Culham. Unusually for this course conditions were much drier underfoot than in recent years.

White Horse Harriers Men’s team failed to build on the big lead they had gained in round one in the Division 2 standings as a result of the absence of several key team members – their overall lead of 201 points being reduced to 83 points. First Harrier home in an excellent 7th place was Jonathan Cornish who in the process secured 1st place in the Under 20 Men’s category. Second Harrier was Paul Jégou in 14th place who ran a well–paced race on return from injury. Steve Marshall turned in another solid performance in 25th place.

In the younger age groups our top performer was Charlie Harrison - 2nd under 13 Boy. Okan Onay was a very promising 6th in the same race. The ever dependable duo of Sophie Lloyd, 4th, and Josie Harrison, 8th, yet again both produced very solid performances in the Under15/17 Girls race.

top < Watlington XC 10k – Watlington Sports Club, Watlington ~ Sunday, 4 December 2011

The Watlington XC 10k has established itself as a popular cross country run and is now in its third year.

The run takes in a beautiful section of the ancient Ridgeway trail before heading steeply up into the wooded Chiltern Hills. A steep decent down Shirburn Hill with stunning views of the Oxfordshire plain is followed by twisting singletrack sections through woods followed by another steep (and they do mean steep) ascent of Watlington Hill. The final section down the hill is the runners favourite although careful foot placement is essential through the fast twisting single track back down to the Ridgeway to complete the course.

This event is very relaxed and attempts revive the spirit of fell running, a sense of cameraderie and no chip timing!

Our representative in this race was Stewart Scott who had a fine run over this tough course, finishing in an excellent 12th place.

top < Tadley Christmas XC – Hurst Community College, Tadley, Hants ~ Sunday, 4 December 2011

What an excellent, low key and very well organised cross country, this certainly is a race for the shortlist! Measured at a shade over 5.3 miles, the route is primarily through well maintained woodland paths, with several fields and a few ditches thrown in!

After all the exertions and picking up a hard earned mug at the finish, a short warm down walk then greeting all of the runners back at the race HQ was a most welcome cup of soup! The prizes for all the age category and team winners were beautiful engraved cut glass crystal bowls.

Our very own John Peake made the most of neglecting his Oxford Mail team duties by winning the V40 prize, finishing in 8th position overall. Ros Burgess put in a strong effort to gain 3rd place in the F45 age group, finishing in 48th place. Unfortunately, due to injury, we were unable to make up the minimum number required to complete a full team.

top < Wessex Cross Country League Round 2 – Hudson Field, Salisbury ~ Sunday, 27 November 2011

Hudson's Field Salisbury, in the shadow of the Old Sarum hill fort, was the venue for Sunday's second round of the Wessex League. White Horse Harriers were led home by Paul Jégou in second place in what was his 22nd race over the Salisbury course. Veteran John Peake produced a solid performance to finish in eighth place, despite a broken toe.

The highlight of the day was Graham Wiggins determined effort to overtake a rival on the final bend that resulted in our Mens team securing 2nd place by 1 point from Wimborne A.C. Without Graham's epic 'manouvre' (words such as 'shoulder charge','racing line' and 'stewards enquiry' come to mind!) the team would have had to share 2nd place with Wimborne! Well done Graham, you made our day!

top < Eynsham 10K – Eynsham, Oxon ~ Sunday, 27 November 2011

Two of our more experienced Harriers took on the blustery conditions of Eynsham for the last of this years Oxon Road Race Grand Prix Series races. Stepping up to the plate were Neil Druce and Nick Portsmouth, both performing with credit. Neil continues to improve after a lengthy spell off with injury and Nick was suitably pleased with his run.

top < Berks, Bucks & Oxon Cross Country Championships – Buttersteep Rise, Bracknell ~ Saturday, 20 November 2011

This year's event hosted by Bracknell A C took place in Swinley Forest in thick fog over a very flat course. Top performances by White Horse Harriers came from Sophie Lloyd 2nd Under 17 Lady and Jonathan Cornish 3rd Under 20 Man. The Men's race was notable for having four Under 20s in the first twelve but no Veterans - something of a rare event these days. top < Chiltern Cross Country League Round 4 – Casiobury Park, Watford ~ Saturday, 12 November 2011

The second race of the 2010/11 Chiltern Cross Country League series took place at Casiobury Park, Watford on Saturday.

The representatives for the White Horse Harriers on this occasion were Sophie Lloyd and Mitch Lomas, the only Juniors that made the journey. The day started overcast but the sun did shine by the start of the U17w/U20w's race. The ground was hard despite the recent rain and a lot of the course was on hard tracks. Sophie took the lead early to be overtaken on the long hill up through the golf course. Rebecca Murray (Bedford & C) took the honours again finishing the 5km in 18.47 mins. Sophie completed the course in 20.33 mins to finish 9th U17 (14th overall). Mitch settled into the front part of the pack of 61 runners and completed the course in 24.51 mins and 27th place.

top < Oxford Mail Cross Country League Round 1 – Ascott–under–Wychwood, Witney ~ Sunday, 6 November 2011

The 2011/12 Oxford Mail League season got under way with its traditional start on the hillside overlooking Ascott–under–Wychwood and the surrounding vale on Sunday with the Harriers fielding a strong contingent of competitors.

White Horse Harriers Men produced their best result for several seasons with a resounding win in Division 2 and, in doing so, have greatly improved their chance of promotion into the top Division. The race took place in sunny but cold conditions in a welcome contrast to the wet, muddy conditions of recent years. The team result was boosted by the performances of some of the younger members led home by St Mary's University student Tim Traynor, in a fine 5th place, in this ultra competitive field. Next Harrier was 18 year old rising star Jonathan Cornish in 12th with our youngest eligible member, Alex Mills, making his debut in the Mens race with an excellent 54th place. Steve Marshall 22nd, Paul Jegou 44th, Dan Peace 89th and John Peake 95th gave a team score of 321, putting us 201 points ahead of the second place team. Other fine performances came in the Under 15/17 Girls race with 4th place in the team event as a result of an excellent 5th place by Sophie Lloyd, 8th by Josie Harrison and 22nd Becky Hodgson.

top < Chiltern Cross Country League Round 1 – Wigmore Valley, Luton ~ Saturday, 15 October 2011

Representing White Horse Harriers were Sophie Lloyd and Mitch Lomas who travelled to Luton for the first of the Chiltern League Cross Country races. These league races tend to have much larger fields and are of a higher quality than the Oxford Mail League. The course is right next to Luton Airport with the aircraft landing strip adjacent to part of the route. Sophie is racing in the U17s category this year with the U20s competing in the same race. Sophie started well and stayed clear of the block at the first bend by keeping to the outside. She settled down into about 15th place for the first lap but worked hard up the inclines and took advantage of the faster declines to improve on her position. Sophie finished 12th (8th if you exclude the U20s) out of 55 runners, completing the 4.6km course in 20.28 mins and shows great promise for the coming season.

Mitch was racing in the U17M category was a little slow in starting but kept out of trouble on the first bend. The eventual winner set up a good lead right from the start and even after taking an unscheduled detour still finished 23 seconds ahead of 2nd place. Mitch had to work hard, despite an injury to his ankle, mangaging to complete the 6km course in 21.27 mins, finishing 33rd out of 65 runners.

top < JW Ultra – Stratford Greenway ~ Stratford upon Avon, Warwks. ~ Saturday, 24 September 2011

The JW Ultra caters for individuals brave enough to take on the full 30 mile trail run or for teams to compete in a 3 x 10 mile relay run along the canal tow path from Stratford-upon-Avon to Bournville station in Birmingham. This was the 5th running of a race which was originally intended as a one off event being held in memory of John Ward, one of the founders of Bournville Harriers Running Club, mentor and friend to Mark Lynock, the JW race director.

Our man for the challenge in this epic task was none other than Steve Marshall. Steve's run was a lesson in sublime tactics and pace judgement to win outright in a fine 3:44:16, indeed, at the first Checkpoint, Steve was in 4th place, by Checkpoint 2 he had moved up to 3rd and by the finish he was in 1st place, where it matters most!

The number of runners competing was sadly down considerably on last years turnout of 47 with 22 young athletes taking part. There are scheduled to be a further 2–3 events during the season. These will be confirmed closer to the time.

top < Peasemore 5 Mile Challenge – Peasemore , Newbury ~ Sunday, 11 September 2011

This is an excellent, well organised race run over mildly undulating quiet country roads in a figure of eight layout making it a great course for spectators, although the poor runners have to pass the fine local pub 3 times on route to the finish!

Club stalwart Tim Hughes, a regular competitor in this race over the years, improved on his 3rd placing in last years race clinching an excellent outright victory, with our other representative, Anthony Holmes, in 8th position. It is encouraging to see Anthony, one of our younger runners, in a road race and getting the miles in! This will help to improve his fitness for the impending cross country season.

top < Cotswold Classic 10 – Witney, Oxon ~ Sunday, 11 September 2011

Despite a smaller than average field of runners, possibly down to a very poor weather forcast, a reasonable team of 5 White Horse Harriers chose to tackle the challenging hilly and blustery 10 miles that make up the Cotswold Classic. This year’s race also incorporated the County 10–mile Road Race Championship as well as being one of the events that comprise the Oxfordshire Grand Prix series.

First Harrier home was John Peake, in 24th place, in a personal best time of 64:44 for the course. Next home was Graham Wiggins in 76th with Nick Portsmouth in 127th. First Harrier Lady home in 116th was Claire Hazell in a fine 83:41 and in doing so ensured another maximum points in her quest to win the Ladies Club Championship. Catherine Wainwright was next home in an encouraging time of 87:41 despite less longer distance training than she would have liked.

The overall winner of the race this year was Steve Male (Oxford City A.C.) recording an excellent time of 56:00 to secure the county title in a clear win from Nigel Marley (Coventry Godiva) 56:47, with James Bolton (Woodstock Harriers) in 3rd in 57:05.

The first lady home this year was Sophie Carter (Woodstock Harriers) in a clear cut win from 2nd placed Shona Crombie-Hicks (Bourton Road Runners) and 3rd place Jessica Webb (Woodstock Harriers).

top < Cotswold Cross Counties 10k – Bledington ~ Oxon. ~ Sunday, 4 September 2011

Another "pot hunting" smash and grab, that paid off wonderfully, took place at the weekend with John Peake competing in the inaugural Cotswold Cross Counties 10k multi-terrain race. This race is run in aid of the Muscular Dystrophy Campaign. The race starts and finishes in the beautiful village of Bledington and, in doing so, crosses from Oxfordshire into Gloucestershire and back into Oxfordshire, the event takes in some stunning countryside including the Daylesford Estate and the village of Kingham.

Right from the start John vied for the lead with Simon Pritchard (Banbury Harriers). They quickly established a comfortable lead over the remainder of the field with John managing to draw away from Simon just after the 5k mark. Despite some slightly misleading signeage the narrow advantage was maintained and the course was safely negotiated, more or less, to the finish. 1st John Peake (White Horse Harriers A.C.) 39:33 from 2nd placed Simon Pritchard (Banbury Harriers) 40:05 with Rob Williams (Liverpool Running Club) 41:18 in 3rd. First lady home was Nicola Gomm (Witney Road Runners) 44:32 from 2nd placed Sheila Barber (Unattached) 46:11 from 3rd placed Laura Howells (Unattached) 49:34. The route is gently undulating and would suit runners of all abilities. It certainly isn't a course for chasing a personal best time as it is almost 500 metres longer than the stated distance!

John's "selective" approach to local races paid off in spades with a lovely prize that, no doubt, he will be only too pleased to tell you about when you next see him - you have been warned!

Well done to John on his win.

top < Abingdon Parkrun No.18 – Rye Meadow ~ Abingdon, Oxon ~ Saturday, 3 September 2011

Following a number of positive comments from a growing contingent of White Horse Harriers here is some information that you may find interesting. The organisors of the Parkrun Series write "Abingdon parkrun is a FREE weekly 5km event for runners of all standards, which takes place every Saturday at 9am at Rye Meadow, Abingdon. It is not a race against other runners, as such, but a 5k timed run and it can really be whatever you want it to be, whether that's for fun or as part of a training plan. It offers an opportunity for all the local community, male or female, young or old, to come together on a regular basis to enjoy this beautiful park and get physically active into the bargain. The quest is to encourage people to jog or run together irrespective of their ability – this event is truly open to all and best of all it really is FREE! Taking part is easy – just register in advance on the Parkrun website by 6pm on the Friday before your first ever parkrun. The great thing is that you only ever need to do this once! Then just set your alarm for Saturday morning and get yourself there! After the run, if you don’t have to get off straight away, there will be the chance to socialise with everyone at Coffee Republic in Abingdon, to maybe swap stories about your run that day, chat to other runners over a cup of tea or coffee and just be an important part of this new running community. So whether you are a complete novice looking to get yourself started on your own "running journey" or a seasoned athlete wanting to use this as a part of your training schedule, you’re welcome to come along and join us."

Not content with racing on Sunday Paul also felt it necessary to chance his arm in the wonderfully named Roundway Rampage on Bank Holiday Monday! This proved to be a worthwhile decision with Paul bagging 2nd place overall. He was unlucky to catch a real tartar in this event as the winner, Paulo Natali, really was a class act for such a small local race!

top < Englefield 10k – Englefield House ~ Englefield, Berks ~ Sunday, 28 August 2011

Another "pot hunting" smash and grab took place at the weekend with John Peake competing in the Englefield 10k multi-terrain race. This race is organised by The Rotary Club of Reading Abbey and Tadley Runners, held in the beautiful parkland of historic Englefield House, estate home of the Benyon family, in the idyllic village of Englefield, Berkshire.

The 10k race is the main event of the 3 races on the day. The route takes in a looped circuit of the Englefield Estate including paths, tracks, woodland tracks, lakeside trails, three hills, the village, and passes one side of the main house. This is an excellent course for spectators as the runners can be seen on 4 occasions if stood at the start location and then its just a 100 metre walk from here to the finish line to see them on the 5th occasion. It is also worth noting that there is a Garden Centre & Coffee shop right by the start line to while away any spare time that you may have.

John's "selective" approach to local races paid off with 3rd placing overall behind winner Heath Bampton 37:52 (Swindon Harriers) and 2nd placed Michael Rix 39:18 (Farnham Runners) It is interesting to note that the older brigade of Veteran 40 Men filled 5 of the first 6 places, is there a decline in standards of the senior men competing these days or is it more of a case that the more "experienced" runners are putting in the effort and picking out suitable races or, indeed, a combination of both?

Well done to John on winning a nice shiny bronze medal to add to his running awards.

top < The 29th Race the Train (Rotary Challenge) – Tywyn, Mid-Wales. ~ Saturday, 18 August 2011

Legend has it that, just over a quarter of a century ago, a few men sat in the local pub on the western coast of Wales, discussing the narrow gauge Talyllyn railway and ancient steam engine that runs on it. A few beers were enjoyed and then the bold statement was thrown down, “I could run faster than that bloody train.” The bet was laid and the race was on!

This unique event is a must for all multi-terrain runners. Many competitors return regularly to try and better their performance or just beat that train while others have run nearly every year since the races started. Most serious runners have heard about it either from their friends, TV or internet. These events also give you the additional challenge of not only racing your fellow competitor’s but also the Train. Having been televised world-wide on several occasions many have been attracted from abroad, coming from as far away as New Zealand, Australia, America, Hong Kong and Africa. Race the Train takes place alongside, as far as practicable, the route taken by the Talyllyn Railway on its journey to Abergynolwyn and back. In order to do this the course uses a mixture of public roads, lanes, un-metalled roads, tracks, agricultural land, and rough grazing pastures. The terrain varies all the time and can be very wet & muddy in places, the routes also ascend and descend quite steep terrain and runs on narrow footpaths with little chance of overtaking. Often the Train, or for many runners the track, is just over the fence and in many places if you draw close to the train your family and friends, if onboard, will be able to shout encouragement to you!

The Talyllyn Railway was the first of the small railways to be rescued by a preservation society, and is now one of the Great Trains of Wales. You can take your family on the train at any time to show them where you have run, or where you propose to run! Although no Championship POINTS were available, the 29th running of this challenge drew two determined Harriers to the start, representing us were event newby Steve Marshall accompanied by Race the Train veteran Simon Leech. Both of our runners comfortably beat the train and although Steve ENGINEered victory over his fellow Harrier the moral victory goes to Simon for avenging last years agonising 1 second defeat!

Simon was reported to be well CHUFFED with his run and after all of his recent TRAINing with COACH Dave Parsons his fitness seems to be well on TRACK. Steve, although under the weather, didn't run out of STEAM and, when he did hit a flat spot, he just stoked up the BOILER and dutifully avoided hitting the BUFFERS. Hopefully this race will provide them both with a suitable PLATFORM for the forthcoming crosscountry season. Why not pencil this race into your TIMETABLE for next year?

The Hooky 6 constituting the 8th race in both the White Horse Harriers’ Club Road Race Championships and this season’s Oxfordshire Grand Prix Series took place on Sunday over the challenging and undulating, 2–lap course starting and finishing in front of Hook Norton Sports & Social Club. The almost ideal weather conditions were welcomed by the 280 strong field.

Another solid turnout by the Harriers ensured there would be plenty of competition for the Club Road Race Championship points at stake. Paul Jégou put his below par effort at Bletchingdon well behind him with a fine 8th place in an ultra competitive field to clinch maximum points in his bid to retain his title. Honours of the day go to Tim Hughes as the next Harrier home producing a strong run to finish in 12th position and taking the V50 category win in the process. John Peake was the next Harrier across the line finishing in a creditable 24th place, followed home by Graham Wiggins (120th). First home of our lady competitors was the ever consistant Clare Hazell in 157th followed by Jan McCabe who finished in 233rd position.

Tom Fisher (Avon Vally Runners) made the long trip worth the effort recording an impressive 31:37 for his victory crossing the line a mere 9 seconds clear of his closest rival and local runner Darrell Bellinger (Oxford City A.C) in 2nd, with last years winner Paul Fernandez (Abingdon Amblers AC) next home in 3rd place. The fourth race in the 2011 Mota–vation Series took place at Bletchingdon on Thursday last. This was a venue change replacing the usual August venue of Chipping Norton, adjudged to be unsafe for racing due to ongoing roadworks and subsequent traffic diversions onto the course route. A small adjustment of the course length was made to mirror the distance that would have been raced at Chipping Norton.

Once again it was left to Paul Jégou and John Peake to fly the flag for the Harriers, in what proved to be something of an unusual and rare event! Indeed, the ever consistant Paul, managed to put in something of a below par effort and John, no doubt encouraged by Paul's meagre advantage over him, ran a seasons best finishing a mere 25 seconds behind him!

The overall race winner this year was the seemingly invincible Steve Naylor (Woodstock Harriers) who completed the course in a time of 00:21:32 crossing the line 61 seconds clear of his nearest rival. The 7th Club Championship Road Race of the season took place in the guise of the Up Tow–Down Flow Half Marathon on Sunday. top < Swanage Half Marathon – Swanage~ Dorset~ Saturday, 16 June 2011

Two of our Harriers made a weekend of it with family and friends, camping and then competing in the very popular Swanage Half Marathon. Jimmy Lawton and Adi Evans set out over the undulating road course which has a particularly strength sapping hill at the 7 mile point. Rumours that Adi's race ending injury came the moment the hill appeared in the distance are surely wide of the mark!?! Our remaining Harrier, Jim, completed the course in a fine 159th place of the 597 runners.

Congratulations to Jimmy on a fine run and commiserations to Adi on yet another injury, one more in a catalogue of problems that have blighted his season so far.

Fine conditions that were mercifully cooler than in recent days for Race 3 of the Mota–vation Series, with a refreshing shower just before the start. This is the shortest of the Mota–vation Series races at 3.9 miles with a challenging hill at the 2.5 mile point, not a problem for Harrier competitors that duel with Gramps Hill above Letcombe Bassett on a regular basis!

Rarely are conditions as perfect for racing as experienced at yesterdays Didcot 5. Plaudits go to Paul Jégou for finishing in a fine 3rd place with John Peake finding some form next home in 7th. First Lady Harrier home was Jan McCabe, who took full advantage of our other ladies apathy towards club championship races, finishing in 74th place.

Truth be told the course is not the most inspiring, although it is fast and flat despite being run predominantly on cycle paths albeit with too many road crossings, corners and kerbs for most peoples tastes.

It is hard to fathom how our club, with such a large membership, can only muster 4 runners for such a local race, let alone it being a Club Championship event! Answers on a postcard please........

top < The Compton Canter 9.1K – Compton, Berkshire ~ Saturday, 2 July 2011

Hot conditions prevailed for the 6th running of The Compton Canter 9.1k multi–terrain race. This is another fine local event run by Compton Harriers starting and finishing on the village green during the festivities of the village fete. The real challenge arrives just after 1.5 miles when Lowbury Hill appears dead ahead, mercifully the route has been shortened to avoid a climb all the way to the summit, then it's a relatively kind descent until another hill appears, though much less challenging, a further descent then another less taxing hill. More farm tracks, field crossings then a turn back onto road and back into Compton, cruelly straight past The Compton Swan pub! It is then a short dash to the village green, around the perimeter and to the finish.

The honours were taken by Nick Jones of Newbury A.C. in 32:16 with Guy Watts again finishing in 2nd place, with 3rd place going to Chris Bedford. We were, however, ably represented by Jim Lawton who claimed 12th place overall in 41:07 with Adi Evans in 16th place in 42:02 claiming 3rd place Vet 40. Ian Reese completed the White Horse line up in 26th place. Of interest, to some of our older club members, was the appearance of club legend Lisa Godding who finished in 14th place in 41:27 and she wasn't representing a club.......

An addition to this years event was the running of several Fun Runs for children. It was great to see two of our White Horse Harrier runners each having a representative in their respective age groups, Adi Evans had daughter Georgia running in the Under 10 Girls event in which she claimed a fantastic 3rd place and Jimmy Lawton's son Elias ran a great race, with the most incredible sprint finish, to come 2nd in the Under 12 Boys beaten by only 2 seconds by a boy a year older than him! Pencil this race in for next year as it is an ideal event for runners with families who are able to enjoy a traditional style village fete whilst the running members of the family can experience a rewarding run in beautiful Berkshire downland.

Go on, do it!

top < Ridgeway Relay – Ivinghoe Beacon, Buckinghamshire to Marlborough Leisure Centre, Wiltshire ~ Sunday, 19 June 2011

Our ten White Horse Harrier team members produced a gritty performance in windy conditions to finish 15th of the 40 teams competing in the Ridgeway Relay on Sunday.

A wonderful event that requires our first runner to be ready, willing and able to set off from Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire at the unearthly time of 7.30am! Following this 11 mile leg 9 more runners each, in turn, complete a section of the Ridgeway with the distances varying from 5.4 up to 10.4 miles fininishing at the Marlborough Leisure Centre in Wiltshire. This was also our 3rd fastest ever time for this challenging course.

Special thanks go to Dene Stringfellow. Without Dene’s monumental organisational efforts we simply wouldn’t be able to enjoy this fantastic event, how he remains so calm with all the challenges and obstacles us Harriers throw at him I will never know! Not content with 'only' doing the organisation he also ran one of the toughest legs to ensure we had a complete team! Well done Dene, a true White Horse legend!

While other Harriers were competing in the Oxfordshire Track & Field Championships and Oxford Town & Gown 10k Road Race over the weekend, Paul Jégou travelled down to Wiltshire to compete in the 20–mile event of the Marlborough Downs Challenge. It is an event that Paul has been regular competitor in over recent years and experience clearly told as Paul ran out a worthy winner recording a time of 02:09:21 and crossing the line almost two minutes clear of his closest rival.

Paul subsequently learned that the 20–mile event also incorporated the official UK Trail Running Championships for the Middle Distance (13–26 miles) category. Therefore, if memory serves correctly, Paul becomes the Harriers’ first ever Senior Men’s National Champion! There is arguably no better venue for a run in Oxfordshire than Blenheim Palace the scene of the latest running of the Blenheim 7k on Sunday.

Althought quite blustery for most of the race, the wind was actually BEHIND the runners for the final 800 metres, a rare treat! A strong run from John Peake took him into 11th place out of the 429 runners.

top < Abingdon Parkrun No.1 – Rye Meadow ~ Abingdon, Oxon ~ Saturday, 7 May 2011

Four courageous Harriers, Paul Jégou, Peter Bainbridge, Simon Lord and Jan McCabe stepped up to the plate in Saturday’s Compton Challenge 20 miles multi–terrain race. Paul was attempting to retain last years title but a combination of the heat, navigational errors and a high quality field resulted in a hard fought 3rd place. Paul is gaining a reputation for going off piste during such races, it's as if the regulation 20 miles aren't enough for him– Maybe a more studious approach to navigation is needed, afterall he does own a GPS! AND the route download is available off the organisers website although, in fairness, this wasn't updated to include a slight route amendment around Bower Farm, although a map covering this change was provided on the website. Peter Bainbridge performed well to finish 84th while Jan McCabe ,fresh from last week’s London Marathon, finished 96th. Veteran Simon Lord completed the quartet in with a solid run in 113th place. Adrian Evans continues his return from injury claiming 6th place after a protracted battle in the dash for the finish. Mike Smith was quite happy just to complete his first race since last August, mission accomplished!

This local and well organised race really does deserve a higher volume of runners, literally catering very well for all standards.

top < Brill Hilly 10k – Brill, Bucks ~ Sunday, 3 April 2011

The second round of the 2011 Club Road Race Championships took place in the picturesque village of Brill in rural Buckinghamshire on Sunday with the inaugral running of the Brill Hilly 10k.

The clue is in the title! The course – from the start, by the beautifully restored Windmill, a steep descent for the first 2k gradually levelling out up to the 6k mark after which a steady incline gives way to something all the more vicious! The challenge that remained after the 8k point was extreme to say the least, what a HILL! Thankfully, although a little blustery in places, the weather conditions were some of the best we have had so far this year. In finishing 9th overall John Peake secured 3rd place in the V40 category picking up a nice trophy for his efforts.

A cool and blustery afternoon greeted the athletes for the annual running of the Teddy Hall Relays staged at the Iffley Road Stadium in Oxford. Despite this the event was once again well–supported by both the universities and colleges as well as local clubs. top < Southern Cross Country Championships – Parliament Hill, London ~ Saturday, 29 January 2011

The South of England Cross Country Championships once again returned to Parliament Hill in London and our more serious athletes were keen to once again race against their peers from across the South. It was an early start for the junior runners with some catching the train at 7:00am and then walking from Paddington to the venue! For the rest of us the walk across the heath from the car park was quite enough!

It was a bitter day but dry and the course was not nearly as muddy as last year. Having walked the various courses and collected numbers and timing chips the runners were ready. The best performances on the day came from Sophie Lloyd, Ben Claridge, Jonathan Cornish and Bethan Murphy–Hand who all finished in the top 100 of their respective races, with Alex Mills just 6 seconds outside the first 100 in his race. Josie Harrison also took part in the U15 Girls event, but unfortunately did not wear her timing chip so was unplaced.

Carol Lloyd

Sadly, we were unable to achieve any team results in the Senior Women’s and Senior Men’s events owing to late withdrawals – our ladies only needed one more team member! There was some concern over the attire sported by two of our men making their season’s cross country debut

However, our senior and veteran athletes performed commendably despite the bitterly cold conditions. Lucia Singer lead our ladies home, finishing in 216th place ahead of Carolyn Murphy (255th) and Rosalind Burgess (263rd).

Paul Jégou, in his element, lead our men home over the challenging three–lap course comfortably under an hour to finish in 177th place. James Lawton in his first appear this season in cross country was next over the line in 744th position a full minute ahead of our other male debutant “Whinger” Evans sporting what can only be described as a wetsuit! What on earth was he expecting?! Once again, Dene Stringfellow performed “tail–end–charlie” duties admirably stumbling home in 839th place!

top < Wessex Cross Country League Round 3 – Ham Hill, Stoke–sub–Hamdon, Yeovil ~ Sunday, 23 January 2011

A cool day with sunny spells was the reward for our two keen Harriers who endured a somewhat epic journey to the farthest flung of this years Wessex Cross Country League Fixtures at Ham Hill, North West of Yeovil.

The long journey was worth all the effort as both representatives of White Horse Harriers, Paul Jégou and John Peake, produced good performances in capturing 1st and 10th places respectively, with Paul taking the Senior Men’s series Championship title in the process. After an injury–hit season John should be able to win series Bronze in the V40–44 category with a reasonable placing in the next round at Bournemouth.

The testing conditions of this course can not be overstated, with two particularly gruelling climbs that most mere mortals can barely walk up, let alone run! It is interesting to note that on this occasion not only did Paul crash land in the mud during the race but his spectating father Richard managed to take a tumble as well! Rumours that the course is now unsuitable for further competition are surely wide of the mark?!

top < Highworth Team Half Marathon – Highworth ~ Sunday, 16 January 2011

The Highworth Half Marathon is an invitation team event that takes place largely along country lanes and through the quiet country villages of Hannington, Kempsford and Castle Eaton with the first 5 runners home to score (– which must include a lady). Yesterday the event took place in dull and windy conditions which certainly did nothing to help te runners.

Our team was led home this year by Tim Hughes who finished in 5th position with Dan Peace just failing to make the top twenty finishing in 21st place. Simon Leech improved his time for the course by 2:20 compared to his performance last year to finish in 42nd place as our third counting team member. Lucia Singer was our first lady and fourth counting team member finishing in 62nd place with Hugh Owen completing the team score finishing a further nine places back.

This year the first male finisher across the line was James Bolton (Woodstock Harriers) recording a time of 1:14:19 to end Gary O’Brien’s (Swindon Harriers) series of victories over the past two years. Gary had to settle for 2nd place this time round with David Bell (Cirencester AC) holding off his nearest rivals to claim 3rd place. The first lady home this year was Lucy Walmesley (Bourton Road Runners) who recorded a time of 01:28:28 who finished almost five and a half minutes clear of her nearest challenger. Bourton Road Runners claimed the team title for the third year running with Cirencester AC just eight points behind and Woodstock Harriers in third place. White Horse Harriers finished in 9th place out of the qualifying 13 teams.

Well done to all our team members. There were 114 competitors who completed the event this year. It was good to see another excellent turnout by our Harriers for this event despite travelling distance involved. Congratulations to everyone on their performances and many thanks again to Highworth RC and their helpers for staging this event not to mention the ladies serving the excellent drinks and home–made cakes!

top < Chiltern Cross Country League Round 4 – Stopsley, Luton ~ Saturday, 15 January 2011

Just three junior runners made the journey to Stopsley near Luton for the penultimate Chiltern Cross Country League race. Rain threatened all day but managed to hold off. The course was flat and waterlogged in many places.

Sophie Lloyd (U15) was the first to race but didn’t get her usual best start. However she soon made up ground and settled down in the top 20 runners. The course meandered round a couple of playing fields but the major factor was the wind which was very strong on the last part of the course. Sophie completed the 4.1 km course in 16:43 finishing 17th and 1st in League 2.

Alex Mills also didn’t start well and then fell over about 100m along the course but rolled up to his feet and set about attacking the field. He worked his way through the field finishing 28th and 5th in League 2 just ahead of Radley’s Jack Humphreys.

Jonnie Cornish was our final competitor in the mens race. Five minutes before the race there was a distinct lack of competitors except Jonnie, then with 3 minutes to go 276 men appeared! Jonnie got a good start and set off at a good pace. The 9.7 km course had two laps and Jonnie was in the first 40 after one lap. He maintained a good working pace to complete the course in a time of 32:13 and finish 34th overall (9th – U20) and 5th (3rd – U20) in League 2.

We must commend the catering tent which provided some most excellent cherry cake.

top < Oxford Mail Cross Country League Round 3 – Horspath ~ Sunday, 2 January 2011

The third round of the Oxford Mail Cross Country League took place on Sunday 2nd January at Horspath Stadium, Oxford. Unfortunately White Horse Harriers numbers were markedly down on recent meetings, especially in the Senior Mens event, this could well compromise our push for promotion into the top Division especially as our nearest rivals are rallying to the cause.

top < Club Winter Handicap – Wantage ~ Saturday, 1 January 2011

A chilly and overcast day greeted the 12 brave Harriers who were prepared to battle for honours in the annual Winter Handicap following what were, no doubt, the excesses of the Festive Season. The "We are only beginners!" Ladies conned the ever gullible handicapper, John Peake, into somewhat over generous time advantages for this 4+ miler along the quiet paths and roads of Ardington and Lockinge

Congratulations to Barabara Margetts on a fine performance and a well–deserved victory, not to mention her excellent negotiating skills! The fastest time of the day was recorded by Anthony Holmes who completed the course in a time of 25:03.

Unfortunately for newcomer Gabor Devecsery a navigational error resulted in a more circuitous route back to the finish at The Nelson Pub!

Congratulations to everyone for continuing to make the opening event of the year a success. This was a decent turnout of runners considering the close proximity to tomorrows combined Oxford Mail and Oxon Cross Country championships.
