Club Cross Country Championship Standings 2009/10

With no club championship points at stake just two of our Harriers, Paul Jégou and John Peake, made the long trip down to Yeovil on Sunday, 21 February to contest Round 4 of the Wessex Cross Country League held at Ham Hill, Stoke–sub–Hamdon in the company of Richard Jégou – cheerleader, chauffeur and team photographer. Ham Hill, which is a geological site of special scientific interest which comprises an Iron Age hill fort, a Roman site, and country park, is a beautiful setting for the race. Plenty of interest to keep the athletes occupied if they get bored with the racing, then!
Although this was Round 4 of the series it was actually only the third race owing to the previous fixture, scheduled to be held at Langport, having to be cancelled due to flooding of the course. With both Paul and John in with a shout for honours in this season’s series all was to play for. The course at Ham Hill is recognised as stiff challenge for the competitors with some very steep and muddy climbs along with some rocky and slippery descents. The courses for the day’s events comprise a combination of long and short laps with the short lap a relatively benign one provided the runners remember to avoid the low bough of the tree!
It was pleasant surprise to enjoy a bit of sunshine after all the recent poor weather. In the final event of the day Paul Jégou produced a workman–like performance, given he was suffering from a cold, to finish in 2nd place behind the overall winner of the Senior Men’s race Nathan Young (Mendip AC). With almost two minutes separating the first three athletes it was a fairly cut–and–dried contest at the front of the field. This result places Paul second in the current overall standings with one race to go.
John Peake continued his fine vein of recent form to secure 6th place in the race crossing the line over a minute and a half ahead of his rival Nick Ireland (Dorchester/Weymouth) for the Veteran Men’s 40–44 category title. John is now placed equal first in the 40–44 Veteran Men category standings with one race left in the series. He has a great opportunity to secure the category title in the final round at the end of March provided he remains injury–free.
In the Women’s race Verity Ockenden (Poole Runners) secured the overall series by winning her second race of the series (– having come second in the other race). After a conservative start Verity clawed back the early lead built up by local rival Abigail Jones (Poole AC) and passed her rival on the hilly section around the back of the course crossing the line over 30 seconds clear by the end of the race. Zoe Lamb (Poole Runners) saw off her closest competitors to hold onto 3rd place and in doing so moved into second place in the overall series standings.
Well done to both our Harriers on their determined performances and many thanks go to Richard for providing the chauffeuring and moral support. We look forward to seeing you all at the final Oxford Mail League cross country fixture of the season scheduled for Sunday, 7 March at Horspath, Oxford.

A reminder of the rules for the Junior Cross Country Championships:
- In each championship series race 10 points are awarded to first Harrier in each age group, 8 for second, 6 for third, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – and if there are more than eight Harriers in a race everyone will score at least 1 point.
- Championship series races are all the Oxford Mail Leagues, all the club Time Trials, plus the BB&O (– except for the U9s and U11s) and Oxfordshire Championships.
- Everyone scores an additional point for participation in any extra (non–championship series) races and a 3 point bonus for county selection.
- All school Year 4s (– and Year 3s if any younger brothers and sisters want to run timetrials) will count as Under 9s in our championship.
- The runner with the most points in each age group at the end of the season will be rewarded with a trophy (although runners must have participated in at least 4 events to be eligible for the trophy).
- Everyone who participates in at least 4 events will also receive a medal.
