Club Cross Country Championship Standings 2009/10

Last updated: Saturday, 18 October 2009
The White Horse Harriers' Tent in centre of things at the first Chiltern Cross Country League fixture held at Horspath, Oxford in October 2009.

We couldn’t have wished for better weather at the opening event of the 2009–2010 cross country season. Bright sunshine and reasonably warm temperatures greeted the athletes at the first fixture in this season’s Chiltern Cross Country League held at Horspath, Oxford on Saturday, 10 October. After our initial foray of competing in the league for quite some time last year it was great to see representation of our athletes in the majority of the events.

Probably the closest race of the meeting took place in the Under 11 Girls race where the spectators bore witness to a demonstration of unyielding sibling rivalry at its keenest. As Grace and Hope Goddard returned from the woodland section of the course to the main field they continued shoulder to shoulder for the entire remainder of the race around the perimeter of the field. As the two girls approached the finish they both kicked again in a desperate attempt to get away from each other to no available. In the end they both crossed the line in an identical time of 8:01 some distance ahead of their nearest competitor with Grace taking the victory by the narrowest of margins.

In the Under 11 Boys event the Harriers were ably represented by Okan Onay and Isaac Allen. Both boys acquitted themselves well with Okan finishing strongly to record 19th place and Isaac gaining valuable experience crossing the line in 42nd place. The winner of the race was Will Perkin (Chiltern Harriers) who crossed the line comfortably ahead of nearest rival recording a time of 7:18.

Ben Claridge clearly relished the challenge – experiencing his first Chiltern Cross Country League event – to produce a fine performance in the Under 13 Boys race and finish in 14th position. Having progressed from the Under 11 age group in which he competed last year Ben will have gained invaluable experience not to mention confidence that he is an able competitor at this level. Harvey O’Brart (Watford Harriers) achieved his victory in the Under 13’s race by edging out Christian von Eitzen (Radley) in a time of 10:13.

Our representative in the Under 15 Girls race following a season of strong improvement last season in the Under 13’s section was Sophie Lloyd. Running against older competitors this year will provide excellent experience for Sophie. An encouraging performance saw Sophie produce a solid performance to come home in 28th place. Rebecca Murray (Bedford & County) saw off her closest rivals to record her victory crossing the line in a time of 14:14.

Strong performances by Mitch Lomas and Alastair Paterson in the Under 15 Boys race saw them cross the finishing line in 26th and 41st places respectively. Particularly encouraging was Mitch’s excellent finish which saw him outsprint some of his closest rivals. Ricky Harvie (Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow) recorded the only sub 14 minute time of the race – 13:42 – to earn his victory in the Under 15’s event.

In the Under 17 Girls section we were represented by Bethan Murphy’Hand in her first outing of the season. Having moved up from the Under 15’s age group which she competed in last year, Bethan was pleased with her performance in finishing in 18th place. Emily Wallbank (Bedford & County) started off her 2009-2010 Chiltern Cross Country League campaign with a victory in the Under 17 Girls race recording a time of 18:30.

Having graduated from last year’s rivalry in the Under 15 Boys category Anthony Holmes, Alex Mills and James Ritter (The Three Musketeers!) set about renewing their keen rivalry in the Under 17 Boys age group race! Alex produced the best performance to finish in 23rd position, with James finishing in 43rd place. Unfortunately Anthony had to drop out of the race owing to an upset stomach. Hopefully this will prove to be a minor hiccup in his season from which he will quickly recover. Sadly, this almost certainly cost these young athletes a top ten finish in the team event. Jack Goodwin (Bedford & County) managed to hold off his teammate Matt Bergin to record his victory with both Bedford & County athletes dipping under the 20 minute mark for the distance.

Sadly, with none of our ladies making an appearance it was left to our senior and veteran men to fly the flag for the club. The Senior & Veteran Ladies race saw a clean sweep of the top three places by Bedford & County athletes with Natasha Peters recording her victory in a time of 22:03 ahead of club mates Nicola Sykes and Rebecca Newstead.

Paul Jégou started off the defence of his club cross country crown with a very impressive 8th position overall in the Senior, Junior & Veteran Men’s race just pipping Steve Kimber (Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow) to the line by just one second. The overall winner of the Senior, Junior & Veteran Men’s event was Richard Franzese (Harrow AC) who built on his early lead to record a comfortable winning margin of some 200 metres by the time he crossed the finish line in a time of 30:27.

Graham Wiggins got his season off to a solid start finishing in 210th place overall despite having suffered a bout of overnight sickness. Dene Stringfellow once again kept the marshals waiting finishing in 272th place ’ the consolation of taking the lead in the Club Championship veteran standings proved adequate recompense however!

Congratulations to all our competing athletes and thanks to all our supporters, coaches and parents. We look forward to seeing you all out in force at the first Oxford Mail Cross Country League fixture at Ascott–under–Wychwood on Sunday, 1 November.

Reports, photographs and results of any of your exploits throughout the season would be greatly appreciated by Dene Stringfellow and Paul Jégou – if you would like to see The Harrier continuing to flourish, you will need to continue supplying the material!

A reminder of the rules for the Junior Cross Country Championships:

  • In each championship series race 10 points are awarded to first Harrier in each age group, 8 for second, 6 for third, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – and if there are more than eight Harriers in a race everyone will score at least 1 point.
  • Championship series races are all the Oxford Mail Leagues, all the club Time Trials, plus the BB&O (– except for the U9s and U11s) and Oxfordshire Championships.
  • Everyone scores an additional point for participation in any extra (non–championship series) races and a 3 point bonus for county selection.
  • All school Year 4s (– and Year 3s if any younger brothers and sisters want to run timetrials) will count as Under 9s in our championship.
  • The runner with the most points in each age group at the end of the season will be rewarded with a trophy (although runners must have participated in at least 4 events to be eligible for the trophy).
  • Everyone who participates in at least 4 events will also receive a medal.

Below are the tables for the club’s Junior Cross Country Championships for 2009/10 showing the current standings of our competing runners.

Please also note, if you find or are aware of any error(s), please inform either Dene Stringfellow or Simon Atkin so the results table can be updated accordingly – provided that corroborating evidence is submitted, of course!
