Club Cross Country Championship Standings 2009/10

Last updated: Wednesday, 28 November 2009
Dan New negotiating the water splash at Ascott-under-Wychwood in the first Oxford Mail Cross Country League fixture of the 2009/10 season.

Torrential rain and cold gusting winds were a forbidding experience for the athletes at the first fixture in this season’s Oxford Mail Cross Country League held at Ascott–under–Wychwood on Sunday, 1 November. Surprisingly though, the underfoot conditions did not deteriorate to the swamp-like conditions witnessed in the recent past! Unfortunately, the young athletes bore the brunt of the worst of the conditions.

Our two representatives in the Under 11 Girls race were Eloise Graham and Phoebe Leech. Eloise crossed the line to finish in a creditable 17th position with Phoebe finishing just 19 seconds adrift to claim 31st place. The winner of the Under 11 Girls race was Nawal Elkirate (Radley) who just edged her nearest rivals to finish in a time of 3:55.

In the Under 11 Boys event the Harriers were able to field four athletes – shame it didn’t count for a team score. Charlie Harrison lead way home for our boys with a strong perfomance to finish in 10th place. Dan Potter was our next athlete across the line claiming 25th place with Ryan Craze a few places back in 28th place. Isaac Allen completed the course in 44th position. The winner of the race was Robert Crowther (Radley) squeezed home to pip his nearest rivals in a closely contested race recording a time of 3:34.

In the under 13 Girls event we also managed to field a team with four competitors in the race. Josie Harrison lead the way for our girls finishing in 10th position to replicate the performance of her brother in the Under 11 Boys event earlier. Rebecca Copus (17th) was the next Harrier across the line ahead of Chloe Craze (18th) and Emma Rose (19th) who completed the course separated by just one second. In another closely fought battle Beth Hawtin (Oxford City) held off a spirited challenge from Amy Cooper (Marlborough Juniors) to finish clear by a single second in a time of 7:28.

Another a good turnout in the Under 13 Boys event saw Ben Claridge lead our Harriers team across the line in an excellent 6th position. Toby Bellerby was the next of our runners to finish crossing the line in 11th place with Toby Thackray and Mungo Graham finishing in 12th and 13th positions respectively. The runaway winner of the boy’s event was Christian von Eitzen (Radley) who finished well clear of his rivals to record a time of 6:42.

Our representatives in the combined Under 15/17 Girls race were Bethan Murphy–Hand, Sophie Lloyd and Ellie Dykes ensuring a team score. Bethan was the first or athletes home crossing the line to claim 8th place. Sophie was our Harrier across the line recording 13th position with Ellie claiming 17th position. The strong performance of our athletes in this event was rewarded with third place in the team scores. Lauren Hawtin (Oxford City) was the clear winner of the race finishing some 20 seconds clear of her nearest rivals in a time of 13:51.

Another strong turnout in the Under 15/17 Boys category saw the Harriers field two teams. Anthony Holmes led our athletes across the line to finish in 17th position. Next across the line for the Harriers was Zack Olliffe (33rd) who just held off Alex Mills (34th). Oliver Mills crossed the line next to claim 45th place ahead of teammates Tom Froud (47th) and Ben Little (49th). Harry Robertson (Oxford City) was the winner of the race recordig a time of 17:51.

Representing our ladies in the first Oxford Mail event of the season were Sheila Bailey, Ros Burgess and Marie Craze. Ros was our first finisher home crossing the line to record 51st place. Sheila was our next Harrier home in 58th position with Marie rounding off our finishers to record 134th place. The winner of the Women–s race was Helen Barnes (Headington Road Runners) who crossed the line in a time of 25:47.

As always the first Oxford Mail League event of the season saw a good representation of our male athletes with eleven men turning out. Paul Jégou led the way for our Harriers crossing the line in 22nd position with Chris Wilder ably backing him up in 37th place. Stuart Shilston was our next finisher claiming 67th place followed by Dan New (73rd), Matthew Hart (89th), John Peake (96th) with Neil Druce (104th) completeing the scorers for the first team. Graham Wiggins (155th) was the first of our second team scorers across the line followed by Philip Harrison (210th), Dene Stringfellow (218th) and Peter Bainbridge (241st) rounding off our finishers despite having turned his ankle earlier in the race. The overall winner of the Men’s event was Steve Frear (Woodstock Harriers) who held off his nearest challengers to crossed the line in a time of 31:17.

Well done to all our competing athletes and thanks to all our supporters, coaches and parents. We look forward to seeing you all out there competing at the BB&O Cross Country Championships to be held at Braywick Park, Maidenhead on Saturday, 14 November.

Reports, photographs and results of any of your exploits throughout the season would be greatly appreciated by Dene Stringfellow and Paul Jégou – if you would like to see The Harrier continuing to flourish, you will need to continue supplying the material!

A reminder of the rules for the Junior Cross Country Championships:

  • In each championship series race 10 points are awarded to first Harrier in each age group, 8 for second, 6 for third, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – and if there are more than eight Harriers in a race everyone will score at least 1 point.
  • Championship series races are all the Oxford Mail Leagues, all the club Time Trials, plus the BB&O (– except for the U9s and U11s) and Oxfordshire Championships.
  • Everyone scores an additional point for participation in any extra (non–championship series) races and a 3 point bonus for county selection.
  • All school Year 4s (– and Year 3s if any younger brothers and sisters want to run timetrials) will count as Under 9s in our championship.
  • The runner with the most points in each age group at the end of the season will be rewarded with a trophy (although runners must have participated in at least 4 events to be eligible for the trophy).
  • Everyone who participates in at least 4 events will also receive a medal.

Below are the tables for the club’s Junior Cross Country Championships for 2009/10 showing the current standings of our competing runners.

Please also note, if you find or are aware of any error(s), please inform either Dene Stringfellow or Simon Atkin so the results table can be updated accordingly – provided that corroborating evidence is submitted, of course!
