Club Cross Country Championship Standings 2009/10

Last updated: Saturday, 21 November 2009
White Horse Harrier young athlete approaching the finish in the BB&O Cross Country Championships held at Braywick Park, Maidenhead on Saturday, 14 November.

The annual BB&O Championships were held for the second year running at Braywick Park, Maidenhead last Saturday. The weather did not look promising on setting out for the drive over to Maidenhead from Wantage. However, by the time we arrived at the venue the skies had brightened considerably with some occasional bright sunshine breaking through. Sadly, this would prove to be the lull before the storm as was witnessed later in the afternoon!

The young athletes definitely bore the brunt of the bad weather that closed in as the races got under way. Dark clouds and gusting winds were the precursors to what became practically a full–on gale. This combined with a sharp drop in the temperature maked it difficult to erect the club tent. In a short space of time a number of the assembled tents were decimated with some actually flattened and others being quite badly damaged.

Despite everything our tent managed to withstand the onslaught with the assistance of members holding onto various bits of the tent frame! Consequently our tent became a magnet for all the lost souls out in the, by now, torrential rain. We do our best! By now the underfoot conditions were literally a quagmire and some of the steel pegs holding the tent down were beginning to lose their purchase, however.

In the midst of all this we sent out Josie Harrison to compete in the first race. Standing in the shelter of the tent we assured Josie that this was all character–building! Once the Under 13 Girls race got under way it was plain to see that the conditions out there were horrendous. In spite of the conditions Josie produced a battling performance to finish in 18th position while the Bracknell AC team mopped up four of the first five places led home by the Goddard sisters. Grace Goddard crossed the line a couple of seconds clear of her sister Hope in a time of 11:15.

By the time Josie had returned somewhat drenched and bedraggled some of us were beginning to think that it would have been good to have got our ordeal over with! Next up representing us in the Under 13 Boys race were Ben Claridge and Mungo Graham. Ben produced a strong performance to secure a top ten finish crossing the line in 9th place with Mungo ten places further back in 19th position. The race was won by Christian Von Eitzen (Radley AC) recording a time of 12:35.

Sophie Lloyd was our sole representative in the Under 15 Girls race. Sophie produced another battling performance to finish in 13th position behind the winner Becky Berger–North (Bracknell AC) who posted a time of 13:11. The weather conditions were not improving! In the Under 15 Boys event Mitch Lomas matched Ben Claridge’s performance in the earlier Under 13 Boys race leading our contingent home in 9th position. Alastair Paterson was the next Harrier to cross the line followed by Ben Little who finished in 28th place. Jonathan Davies (Reading AC) was the winner of the Under 15 Boys race recording a time of 13:36.

By now the conditions were easing somewhat although the wind was still gusting strongly. In the Under 17 Women event Bethan Murphy–Hand missed out on a top three finish by 18 seconds finishing in 5th place just 3 seconds adrift of the fourth–placed Newbury AC athlete. Pippa Woolven (Wycombe Phoenix AC) ran out the clear winner of the race recording a time of 12:01 almost two minutes of her closest rival. In the Under 17 Men category Anthony Holmes and James Ritter were separated by just 6 seconds at the finish crossing the line in 16th and 17th places respectively. Mitch White (Bracknell AC) was the winner of the race crossing the finish line in a time of 20:21.

In the Senior/Veteran Women category Carolyn Murphy was the only Harrier representative. Carolyn produced a solid performance in her first cross country outing of the season to finish in 35th position. The overall winner of the race was Rachel Elliott (Team Kennet AC) who crossed the line recording a time of 23:55. Frances Briscoe who also ran as a non–counting athlete in the event ran out of the finish area while in second place.

By the time our men lines up for the final event of the proceedings there was nobody left to to keep an eye on the tent which would prove to be a major oversight despite the improving conditions. Paul Jégou who led the Harrier contingent home uncharacteristically fell at one point in the race after which he failed to recover his form and finished disappointingly in 22nd place overall.

Graham Wiggins was our next athlete over the line finishing in 57th position with Dene Stringfellow bringing up the rear once again in 71st place. Nathan White (Windsor, Slough, Eton & Hounslow AC) was the overall winner of the Senior Men category recording a time of 31:24. Unfortunately, by the time our men had returned to the club tent, the devastation was apparent. Unattended the severe, gusting winds had effectively crushed the tent causing irreparable damage to the framework. Sadly, our tent will have to be retired following many years of stirling service.

Congratulations go to all our athletes given the conditions and thanks to all our supporters and helpers for making the trip to Maidenhead. We look forward to seeing the seniors and vets competing at the Wessex Cross Country League fixture to be held at Hudson Fields, Salisbury on Sunday, 29 November.

Reports, photographs and results of any of your exploits throughout the season would be greatly appreciated by Dene Stringfellow and Paul Jégou – if you would like to see The Harrier continuing to flourish, you will need to continue supplying the material!

A reminder of the rules for the Junior Cross Country Championships:

  • In each championship series race 10 points are awarded to first Harrier in each age group, 8 for second, 6 for third, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – and if there are more than eight Harriers in a race everyone will score at least 1 point.
  • Championship series races are all the Oxford Mail Leagues, all the club Time Trials, plus the BB&O (– except for the U9s and U11s) and Oxfordshire Championships.
  • Everyone scores an additional point for participation in any extra (non–championship series) races and a 3 point bonus for county selection.
  • All school Year 4s (– and Year 3s if any younger brothers and sisters want to run timetrials) will count as Under 9s in our championship.
  • The runner with the most points in each age group at the end of the season will be rewarded with a trophy (although runners must have participated in at least 4 events to be eligible for the trophy).
  • Everyone who participates in at least 4 events will also receive a medal.

Below are the tables for the club’s Junior Cross Country Championships for 2009/10 showing the current standings of our competing runners.

Please also note, if you find or are aware of any error(s), please inform either Dene Stringfellow or Simon Atkin so the results table can be updated accordingly – provided that corroborating evidence is submitted, of course!
