Club Cross Country Championship Standings 2009/10

The weather did not look promising as we departed from Grove on Sunday morning. The torrential over downpour did not augur well although we were in bright spirits as the Culham Park cross country course is definitely not for the faint–hearted and we were particularly looking forward to this. We were preparing ourselves for another energy–sapping encounter and just hoped the weather wouldn’t be too much against us!
Thankfully, by the time we arrived at the course the dark clouds had dissipated somewhat and there was even a hint sunshine! We couldn’t believe our luck. We were, however, a little disappointed that someone had removed our table and chairs from the previous year – how thoughtless! As usual, whenever there has been any rain close to or on Culham Park race day there was a lot of standing water around the start/finish area. This guaranteed a good coating of mud before we hit the first turn on the course – probably a good thing really as we were out there to race and not stay pretty!
By the time the races got under way the weather positive balmy and the sun was beating down – OK, I admit, beating down might be stretching it a little bit – but it was certainly a lot warmer than over recent days! Clifford and I even managed a slow recce round the full course just to get a feel for things to come.
Our first young athletes to venture out onto the course were Eloise Graham, currently leading the way in our Under 11 Girls championship, and Sinead Webb, making her first appearance of the cross country season. Both girls produced solid perfomances over the difficult terrain to finish in the middle of the field. In a tight 4–way sprint to the line Eloise managed to pip Sinead by one place with both girls finishing in 27th and 28th places respectively.
In the Under 11 Boys race Ryan Craze produced his best performance of the cross country season so far to finish in a highly creditable 8th place. Ryan clearly relishes the challenge of the tougher courses! Our other Harrier represntative in the race was Okan Onay who delivered another consistent performance to finish in 17th position.
In the under 13 Girls event Josephine Harrison led the way for our girls finishing in 12th place after a close–fought sprint to the line. The other Harrier team members, Chloe Craze and Ellie Taylor, finished in 23rd and 24th places respectively and will have gained valuable experience from racing in the difficult conditions.
Our Under 13 Boys team was represented by Toby Bellerby, Mungo Graham and Toby Thackray. In his second outing of the season Toby Bellerby outsprinted his closest rival to claim 13th position. Mungo Graham turned in another solid performance to finish in 16th place, with Toby Thackray crossing the line in 20th position. Currently the Under 13 Boys team are third position in the league.
Ellie Dykes, Sophie Lloyd and Bethan Murphy–Hand were the Harrier athletes in the Under 15/17 Girls race. With all the girls producing solid performances to claim third place in the team event. Bethan Murphy–Hand led her teammates across the line finishing in 8th place, with Sophie Lloyd two paces adrift in 10th position. Ellie Dykes rounded off the Harrier performances crossing the line 18th place. The Under 15/17 Girls have maintained their second place in the team standings.
In the Under 15/17 Boys race Alex Mills turned the tables on his rival and teammate Anthony Holmes leading the way over the line to claim 14th place. Anthony Holmes, clearly struggling in the conditions, finished 27th position with Alastair Paterson finishing in a creditable 31st place. Tom Froud rounded out the Harrier performances by completing the course in 49th position.
Our senior and veteran ladies representatives for the ladies’ race were Sheila Bailey, Ros Burgess, Marie Craze and Carolyn Murphy. This was a good turnout and ensured the ladies would record a team score. Ros Burgess led the way for the ladies finishing in 54th position followed closely home by Carolyn Murphy (57th). Sheila Bailey was our next Harrier over the line finishing in 75th place with Marie Craze completing the Harrier lineup in 123rd position.
With another solid turnout by the men guaranteed a team score, although we have been struggling to get our best runners out. Paul Jégou, however, continued with his consistent recent run of form to lead our Harrier men over the line to grab 19th place and consolidate his position at the head of this season’s club cross country championship standings. Chris Wilder, in his second appearance of the season, crossed the line in 25th position followed by Stuart Shilston (67th) and John Peake (73rd). Neil Druce was just ten seconds adrift finishing in 76th place. Adrian Evans crossed the line in 135th place ahead of Graham Wiggins (142nd), Clifford Mills (147th) and Dene Stringfellow (182nd) with Jeremy Smeddle (203rd) rounding off our Harrier finishers.
After the finish of all the events a small group of Harriers repaired to The Barley Mow at Clifton Hampden to enjoy a convivial lunch and swap anecdotes from the morning and early afternoon’s exploits. Very pleasant indeed.
Well done to all our athletes and thanks to all our parents and helpers for their assistance at Culham. We look forward to seeing you all out there competing at the next Oxford Mail League event to be held at Banbury on Sunday, 3 January.
Reports, photographs and results of any of your exploits throughout the season would be greatly appreciated by Dene Stringfellow and Paul Jégou – if you would like to see The Harrier continuing to flourish, you will need to continue supplying the material!
A reminder of the rules for the Junior Cross Country Championships:
- In each championship series race 10 points are awarded to first Harrier in each age group, 8 for second, 6 for third, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – and if there are more than eight Harriers in a race everyone will score at least 1 point.
- Championship series races are all the Oxford Mail Leagues, all the club Time Trials, plus the BB&O (– except for the U9s and U11s) and Oxfordshire Championships.
- Everyone scores an additional point for participation in any extra (non–championship series) races and a 3 point bonus for county selection.
- All school Year 4s (– and Year 3s if any younger brothers and sisters want to run timetrials) will count as Under 9s in our championship.
- The runner with the most points in each age group at the end of the season will be rewarded with a trophy (although runners must have participated in at least 4 events to be eligible for the trophy).
- Everyone who participates in at least 4 events will also receive a medal.
