Club Cross Country Championship Standings 2009/10

Last updated: Saturday, 9 January 2010
Tim Traynor on his way to victory in the senior men's race in the third Oxford Mail Cross Country League fixture of the 2009/10 season held at Banbury on Sunday, 3 January 2010.

With some parts of the country having experienced near Arctic conditions over the New Year period it was refreshing to arrive at Banbury for the third Oxford Mail Cross Country League fixture of the 2009/10 season to find the sun shining from the heavens with not a cloud to be seen. Admittedly the course was frozen in parts, particularly over the ploughed field near to the start and the track running along beside the railway line. It certainly paid dividends to walk the course as it was the only way to have found out that it was definitely a course that needed a spike!

Some areas of the course were very sheltered from the elements and consequently the underfoot conditions were bound to become very muddy over the course of the events in those places. The shelter amongst the trees from the north wind would be very welcome as the temperature although not down to as low as the –17°C experienced up in the Lake District was sharp enough for the athletes.

In the first race of the day – the Under 11 Girls – Phoebe Leech was our sole Harrier representative. Phoebe produced solid performance to finish in 31st place behind the winner, Nawal Elkirate (Radley). Charlie Harrison and Ryan Craze were our young athletes in the Under 11 Boys event. In just his third appearance of the season Charlie Harrison finished just outside the top ten crossing the line in 12th place. Ryan Craze was unable to repeat the performance he produced in the previous Oxford Mail League fixture at Culham Park finishing in 26th position.

Once again Josephine Harrison led our girls home in the Under 13 Girls race finishing in 14th place. The other members of the Harrier Under 13 Girls team, Mabel Smith and Chloe Craze, crossed the finish line in 25th and 28th places. The team finished in 9th position. The Under 13 Boys team was represented by Ben Claridge who finished in a very creditable 5th position with Toby Thackray crossing the line in 15th place. Unfortunately the lack of a third team member meant that team dropped to fourth place in the overall standings.

Our Under 15/17 Girls team produced another set of consistent performances to consolidate their second position in the overall team standings. Bethan Murphy–Hand was the first our athletes to cross the line finishing in 7th place. Sophie Lloyd (12th) and Ellie Dykes (18th) rounded out the Harrier perfomances to maintain the team’ position.

An excellent turnout in the Under 15/17 Boys event combined with strong all–round performances assured the team of 4th place in the race. Anthony Holmes (12th) led the Harriers across the line closely followed by Alex Mills (15th) and Mitch Lomas (17th). Zack Olliffe (28th) was our next athlete over the line, followed home by Alastair Paterson (32nd), Matt Rose (40th) and Tom Froud (41st).

In the Ladies event our senior and veteran ladies representatives were Sheila Bailey, Ros Burgess, Karen Froud and Carolyn Murphy on this occasion. Ros Burgess crossed the line first for the ladies finishing in 46th position despite having fallen during the race and picked up some nasty abbrasions. Sheila Bailey was our next Harrier finisher crossing the line in 56th place followed closely by Carolyn Murphy one place further back. Karen Froud, making her first appearance of the cross country season completed the Harrier finishers in 100th position.

The outstanding perfomance of the day was the victory in the men’s race by Tim Traynor who crossed the line over half a minute clear of his nearest rivals. Paul Jégou was our next athlete home crossing the line to claim a creditable 15th place. John Peake (65th) followed our two leading athletes home ahead of Dan New (89th), who was closely followed by Neil Druce (93rd). Graham Wiggins (121st), George Smith (146th), Dene Stringfellow (176th) and Jeremy Smeddle (189th) made up the rest of the Harrier contingent.

A couple of the team members found the time to enjoy a relaxing and well–earned lunch in the Red Lion Inn at Adderbury after the completion of the races. It is an establishment that has much to recommend it and it was a perfect way to celebrate Tim’s victory!

Well done to all our athletes with congratulations in particular going to Tim Traynor for his fine victory. Many thanks again to all our parents and helpers for their help and support at Banbury. We look forward to seeing you all out there competing at the next Oxford Mail League event to be held at Cirencester on Sunday, 7 February.

Reports, photographs and results of any of your exploits throughout the season would be greatly appreciated by Dene Stringfellow and Paul Jégou – if you would like to see The Harrier continuing to flourish, you will need to continue supplying the material!

A reminder of the rules for the Junior Cross Country Championships:

  • In each championship series race 10 points are awarded to first Harrier in each age group, 8 for second, 6 for third, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – and if there are more than eight Harriers in a race everyone will score at least 1 point.
  • Championship series races are all the Oxford Mail Leagues, all the club Time Trials, plus the BB&O (– except for the U9s and U11s) and Oxfordshire Championships.
  • Everyone scores an additional point for participation in any extra (non–championship series) races and a 3 point bonus for county selection.
  • All school Year 4s (– and Year 3s if any younger brothers and sisters want to run timetrials) will count as Under 9s in our championship.
  • The runner with the most points in each age group at the end of the season will be rewarded with a trophy (although runners must have participated in at least 4 events to be eligible for the trophy).
  • Everyone who participates in at least 4 events will also receive a medal.

Below are the tables for the club’s Junior Cross Country Championships for 2009/10 showing the current standings of our competing runners.

Please also note, if you find or are aware of any error(s), please inform either Dene Stringfellow or Simon Atkin so the results table can be updated accordingly – provided that corroborating evidence is submitted, of course!
