Club Cross Country Championship Standings 2009/10

Last updated: Tuesday, 2 February 2010
White Horse Harrier young athlete in action at the 2010 South of England Cross Country Championships held at Parliament Hill Fields, London on Saturday, 30 January 2010.

The South of England Cross Country Championships returned to Parliament Hill Fields below Hampstead Heath in London this year. The overnight rain combined with a heavy frost made for interesting underfoot conditions that were bound to deteriorate as the day wore on. Fortunately the sky was clear with bright sunshine casting its glow over the proceedings – was most welcome as there was a bit of a nip in the air. That was Graham’s excuse anyway!

The walk down to the course through the woodlands from the heath is always exhilerating, particularly as you look down upon the start/finish area. There’s nothing like it to get the adrenaline pumping. Unfortunately, the Harriers had a somewhat depleted squad competing at this year’s championships owing to unavailability and last–minute withdrawals. However, those that made the trip to London benefitted made the most of the conditions to post some very good performances.

With no club representation in the first race of the day – Under 15 Boys, it was left to Josie Harrison to open the White Horse Harrier’s account in the Under 13 Girls event. Josie followed up her county reserve selection with a solid run to finish in 143rd position. Becca Croft (Windsor Slough Eton & Hounslow AC) won the race in a time of 12:30 in a closely fought contest with her three nearest rivals all crossing the line within a second of each other – Sophia Cliffe (Marshall Milton Keynes AC), Bethany Hawtin (Oxford City AC) and Connie Lewis (Chiltern Harriers AC) finishing in 2nd, 3rd and 4th places respectively.

With no repesentative in the Under 13 Boys event, next up for the Harriers was Sophie Lloyd. After having achieved county selection in the previous weekend’s county cross country championships Sophie was looking for another strong performance and duly delivered crossing the line in 66th place. This was a performance that will give Sophie a great deal of encouragement for her future development. The race was won by Jessica Judd (Chelmsford AC) who crossed the finish line nine seconds clear of her nearest competitor, recording a time of 14:48 for the course. Amy Sweet (Newquay & Par AC) was next across the line in 2nd place with Rebecca Knapton (Winchester & District AC) four seconds adrift in 3rd position.

Our next Harrier to enter the fray was Alex Mills competing in the event for the Under 17 Men. Alex produced a solid performance just outsprinting his closest rival to claim 120th position in the race. The winner of this year’s title for the Under 17 Men was Richard Goodman (Shaftesbury Barnet Harriers) who finished comfortably ahead of his closest competitors with a time of 19:48. Teammates Joshua Grace and Ian Bailey (Aldershot Farnham & District AC) finished in 2nd and 3rd places respectively.

Bethan Murphy–Hand also fresh from her county cross country selection the previous weekend produced the Harrier performance of the day in the category for the Under 17 Women. Bethan delivered an excellent performance to finish in 57th position and in doing so notched up some notable scalps. The satisfaction of a job well–done was clearly in evidence as Bethan relaxed after the race. The runaway winner with a time of 18:36 was Emilia Gorecka (Aldershot Farnham & District AC) finishing comfortably clear of her teammate Georgia Peel who, in turn, held off the challenge of Melissa Hawtin (Oxford City AC) to secure 2nd place.

In the Senior Women category our sole representative following late withdrawals was Carolyn Murphy. Carolyn produed another determined performance in deteriorating conditions to cross the line in 254th position. At the head of the field Jessica Sparke (Woodford Green AC with Essex Ladies) took the ladies– crown finishing just shy of a minute clear of her closest rival to record a time of 30:05. Harriet Scott (Havering Mayesbrook AC) held off the challenge of Andrea Whitcombe (Harrow AC) to claim 2nd position.

By the time our men entered the fray some sections of the course had definitely been reduced to a swamp–like condition just to add a bit of spice! With a last minute equine callout deprived Stuart Shilston his place on the start line it was left to Paul Jégou, Dene Stringfellow and Graham Wiggins to round off the proceedings. Paul Jégou, continuing with his consistent vein of form despite still suffering from a slight cold, produced probably his best performance in the South of England Championships to finish in 159th position crossing the finish line in just over the hour mark. Graham Wiggins (718th) just held off a determined challenge over the closing 400 metres or so from Dene Stringfellow who had to settle for 719th place. The men’s title was secured by Neilson Hall (Bedford & County AC) in a time of 50:57 ahead of Jon Pepper (Enfield & Haringey AC) and Kevin Heywood (Bideford AAC) who claimed 2nd and 3rd places respectively.

Well done to our Harriers with congratulations, in particular, going to Bethan Murphy–Hand and Sophie Lloyd for their excellent performances. Thanks again go to our parents and helpers for their help and support at Parliament Hill Fields. We look forward to seeing you all at the next Oxford Mail Cross Country League fixture scheduled for this coming Sunday, 7 February at Cirecester Park.

Reports, photographs and results of any of your exploits throughout the season would be greatly appreciated by Dene Stringfellow and Paul Jégou – if you would like to see The Harrier continuing to flourish, you will need to continue supplying the material!

A reminder of the rules for the Junior Cross Country Championships:

  • In each championship series race 10 points are awarded to first Harrier in each age group, 8 for second, 6 for third, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – and if there are more than eight Harriers in a race everyone will score at least 1 point.
  • Championship series races are all the Oxford Mail Leagues, all the club Time Trials, plus the BB&O (– except for the U9s and U11s) and Oxfordshire Championships.
  • Everyone scores an additional point for participation in any extra (non–championship series) races and a 3 point bonus for county selection.
  • All school Year 4s (– and Year 3s if any younger brothers and sisters want to run timetrials) will count as Under 9s in our championship.
  • The runner with the most points in each age group at the end of the season will be rewarded with a trophy (although runners must have participated in at least 4 events to be eligible for the trophy).
  • Everyone who participates in at least 4 events will also receive a medal.

Below are the tables for the club’s Junior Cross Country Championships for 2009/10 showing the current standings of our competing runners.

Please also note, if you find or are aware of any error(s), please inform either Dene Stringfellow or Simon Atkin so the results table can be updated accordingly – provided that corroborating evidence is submitted, of course!
