Club Cross Country Championship Standings 2009/10

Last updated: Tuesday, 9 February 2010
Chris Wilder in action on the hills in Round 2 of the Oxford Mail Cross Country League held at Culham Park on Sunday, 6 December 2009.

In near–perfect conditions – the only thing that was missing was a howling gale and loads of mud! – the penultimate round of the 2009/10 Oxford Mail Cross Country League was held at Cirencester Park on Sunday. This fixture would also mark a milestone for Pat Read (Headington Road Runners) who was set to retire from running at the end of the race after 21 years of active participation by competing in his 100th Oxford Mail Cross Country League race!

In the first race of the day, the Under 11 Girls, the Harriers were represented by Sinead Webb who ran well to finish in a very creditable 19th position. The race was won by Nawal Elkirate (Radey AC) recording her fourth straight victory of this season’s series crossing the line in a time of 4:41 just 2 seconds clear of her nearest rival Alisha Reayer (Newbury AC). In the Under 11 Boys event Charlie Harrison flew the flag for the Harriers producing a similarly creditable performance to secure 14th position behind the race winner Robert Crowther (Radley AC) who crossed the line a time of 4:17 to also record his fourth victory in this season’s series.

In the Under 13 Girls event Josephine Harrison was our sole Harrier representative finishing in 17th position. The race winner, Beth Hawtin (Oxford City AC), crossed the line in a time 8:14 comfortably clear of her closest rivals Megan Humphreys (Radley AC) and Emma Piatek (Swindon Harriers AC) who claimed second and third places respectively. Christian Von Eitzen continued his domination of the Under 13 Boys series with an emphatic victory recording a time of 7:28 and crossing the line over 30 seconds clear of his closest rivals. Representing the Harriers were Mungo Graham and Toby Thackray who crossed the line in 16th and 17th poisitions respectively.

Next to enter the fray for the Harriers were Ellie Dykes, Sophie Lloyd and Bethan Murphy–Hand aiming to consolidate their overall second position in the series Under 15/17 team standings. Bethan, Sophie and Ellie all produced solid performances to cross the line in 10th, 12th and 15th positions respectively. This gives our girls team a cushion of 12 points going into the final event of the series to be held at Horspath, Oxford at the beginning of March. Lawtin Hawtin (Oxford City AC) recorded her fourth straight success in the series crossing the line in a time of 11:31.

In her first appearance for the Harriers in this season’s series Frances Briscoe, recording a time of 23:32, swept to victory in the ladies’s race with a comfortable margin of in excess of 30 seconds over her closest rivals Helen Barnes (Headington Road Runners) and Kate Jacobs (Swindon Harriers AC). Ros Burgess was our next athlete across the line to secure 38th place closely followed by Carolyn Murphy who finished two places adrift in 40th position. Sheila Bailey (49th) was next to cross the line closing the gap on her rivals at the top of the V55 Women standings and will go into the final race of the series just 2 points behind the series leader, Helen Turley (Headington Road Runners). Karen Froud, in her second outing of the season, rounded off the Harrier finishers crossing the line in 75th position.

A strong turnout by our men in the final event of the day helped to lift the team off the bottom of the Division 1 standings. Chris Gillespie, in just his second appearance of the season, lead our Harriers home finishing in 5th position ahead of Paul Jégou (15th), Jason Cooke (48th) and Tim Hughes (55th). John Peake produced another consistent performance to cross the line in 57th place with Dan New (81st and Neil Druce (88th) completely the lineup of our first team counting finishers. Trevor Taylor, making his first appearnace of the season, secured 111th position to lead the remainder of our team members across the line ahead of Graham Wiggins (117th), Stephen Casey (134th) – making his cross country debut for the Harriers, Dene Stringfellow (173rd) and Jeremy Smeddle (187th). Darrell Bellinger (Oxford City AC) secured his first victory of this season’s series recording a time of 31:28 to consolidate his position at the head of the series standings with one event to go.

Well done to our Harriers with particular congratulations going to Frances Briscoe for her fine performance and victory. Many thanks again to our parents and helpers for their help and support at Cirecester Park. We look forward to seeing you all at the next cross country fixture of the season scheduled for Saturday, 13 February at Cottesloe School, Wing.

Reports, photographs and results of any of your exploits throughout the season would be greatly appreciated by Dene Stringfellow and Paul Jégou – if you would like to see The Harrier continuing to flourish, you will need to continue supplying the material!

A reminder of the rules for the Junior Cross Country Championships:

  • In each championship series race 10 points are awarded to first Harrier in each age group, 8 for second, 6 for third, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – and if there are more than eight Harriers in a race everyone will score at least 1 point.
  • Championship series races are all the Oxford Mail Leagues, all the club Time Trials, plus the BB&O (– except for the U9s and U11s) and Oxfordshire Championships.
  • Everyone scores an additional point for participation in any extra (non–championship series) races and a 3 point bonus for county selection.
  • All school Year 4s (– and Year 3s if any younger brothers and sisters want to run timetrials) will count as Under 9s in our championship.
  • The runner with the most points in each age group at the end of the season will be rewarded with a trophy (although runners must have participated in at least 4 events to be eligible for the trophy).
  • Everyone who participates in at least 4 events will also receive a medal.

Below are the tables for the club’s Junior Cross Country Championships for 2009/10 showing the current standings of our competing runners.

Please also note, if you find or are aware of any error(s), please inform either Dene Stringfellow or Simon Atkin so the results table can be updated accordingly – provided that corroborating evidence is submitted, of course!
