As the name suggests, this takes place annually on 1 January. The first runner is usually sent off at 11am, which should allow plenty of time to recover from the antics of the previous night or, come to think of it, early morning.

The course is about 4 miles long. Starting at the Nelson in Larkhill, it follows the bridle path to “Conker Avenue”, and then the road through West Lockinge to the T-junction in Lockinge. Turning right here it follows the road up the hill, left in front of the monument and past the church. After the church the road sweeps down to the left then bears right. Immediately after this right turn, as the road starts to climb, there is a fork left up a private road. When this meets the lane at the top, the route carries straight ahead and follows the road past Ardington Sports club into the village of Ardington. In Ardington the route turns left along the road to a T-junction. It follows the track straight ahead and after a few hundred yards rejoins “Conker Avenue”. From this point it follows the outbound route in reverse, to the finish back at the Nelson.
