Club Road Race Championship Standings 2010

Last updated: Monday, 15 November, 2010 Graham Wiggins storming to the finish in the 2009 Hanney 5.

The final round of the 2010 Club Road Race Championships (notwithstanding the results from the following week’s Abingdon Marathon) took place at East Hanney, Wantage on Sunday, 10 October. With the club championship titles already decided all that was at stake was pride. The conditions couldn’t have been better – cool with little wind, just about perfect.

This event is traditionally one where The Harriers get a strong turnout and we weren’t disappointed this year. The Harrier representives this time round were Simon Atkin, Sheila Bailey, Karen Froud, Tim Hughes, Paul Jégou, Ben Litte (Junior), Jan McCabe, Hugh Owen, Jeremy Smeddle, Dene Stringfellow, Roger Turnbull, Catherine Wainwright and Graham Wiggins. Sadly, Jason (The Pretender) Cooke did not deign to grace us with his presence having already conceded the championship!

Tim Hughes lead our contingent home with an impressive performance to claim 6th position overall along with a well–deserved victory in the V50 Men category. Paul Jégou was the second Harrier home securing 11th place, despite suffering from a cold, to round off his title winning season. Graham Wiggins produced another solid run to finish in 59th place with Ben Little, one of our rising junior athletes, not far behind (69th) and Hugh Owen making a welcome return crossing the line a further eight places adrift.

Sheila Bailey produced another strong run to lead our ladies home by finishing 80th place overall and claiming victory in the V55 Ladies category in the process. Sheila was followed home by Simon Atkin (95th) competing in his first race following a long layoff through injury, Roger Turnbull (106th), Dene Stringfellow (111th) and Peter Bainbridge (113th).

Catherine Wainwright also making a welcome return to competition was our second lady home crossing the line in 129th place overall. Karen Froud in her second club championship outing of the season followed Catherine home to finish in 141st position overall with Jan McCabe completing her club title–winning season a few places adrift in 146th place overall.

This year’s overall winner was Steven Naylor (Woodstock Harriers) who finished comfortably ahead of his nearest challengers recording his victory in a time of 00:24:44. Fabian Downs (Chiltern Harriers) and Darrel Bellinger (Oxford City AC) crossed the line over a minute adrift to claim 2nd and 3rd places respectively. It is worth also noting that Michael Hager (Tipton Harriers) who finished in 5th place overall would have achieved a British record for the V60 Men category with his time of 00:27:08, had the course been ratified!

Sophie Carter (Woodstock Harriers) made it a club double by finishing in 19th position overall in a time of 00:29:10, thereby securing the overall ladies’ title. Jennifer McBain (Alchester Running Club) was the second lady home crossing the line to record 31st place overall with teammate Liz Grolimund completing the podium places in 46th place overall.

Well done to all our other athletes on their performances with particular Congratulations going to both Tim Hughes and Sheila Bailey on their category victories. A full roundup of the 2010 Club Championship race results including the Hanney 5 are available to view here.
