top < Birmingham Cross Challenge ~ Saturday, 27 October 2007

This event took place at Senneleys Park in Birmingham combining the Cross Challenge with the Birmingham Cross Country league event. If my memory serves me correctly this event was part of the UK Cross Challenge last year but does not appear to be included this year for reasons that are unclear to me.

Among the leading competitors was Frances Briscoe representing the White Horse Harriers in this early season (for cross country) event. Frances finished in a creditable 11th position overall in the league event which translated into 8th place in the Cross Challenge event. By the look of the photos (– see the links below) the conditions cold and damp – just how we like it!

Well done to Frances on another strong performance. If you would like to see some pictures of Frances in action on the dayclick on the links below and it will give you a good idea of what lies ahead on Sunday at Ascott–under–Wychwood.

top < Stroud Half Mararthon ~ Sunday, 21 October 2007

The Stroud Half Marathon has been consistently rated one of the best half marathon events in the country. With nearly fifteen hundred runners competing this year it is clearly a very popular race. The course is described as fast, scenic and largely rural as well as being a good course for improving personal best times.

Our representatives in this year’s race were Tim Hughes who finished in a fine 14th position overall winning V50 Men age category by a clear margin of over three minutes. Following Tim across the line were Paul Jégou in 26th place and Chris Wilder in 125th position. Lorimer Fellingham finished 434th place overall and a creditable 10th position in the V60 category for men.

top < Swindon Half Marathon ~ Sunday, 14 October 2007

Variously described as “Toughest Half Marathon in the Country” to “challenging hills” to “slightly challenging ‘bumpy’ course”! One reviewer described the event as: “Big race atmosphere without all the hassle.” The conditions on the day were probably slightly too warm for most runners’ liking but the facilities and excellent organisation more than made up for it. With 1,058 runners completing the course at this year this is clearly a popular event.

The sole White Horse Harriers competing in this year’s race was Nick Portsmouth who ran well to finish in 567th place overall, which he was pleased with given that the course is a far from flat!

top < Hanney 5 ~ Sunday, 14 October 2007

The Hanney 5 is an old favourite with the White Horse Harriers. The course, starting from the village hall follows a circuitous route out to the village of Lyford along the quiet country lanes and back again. Being a flat course this event provides a great opportunity to improve times. The conditions on the day were bright and dry, with little or no breeze. These were clearly ideal conditions for the competitors.

Being a local event the turnout once again for the White Horse Harriers was excellent. Tim Traynor led the Harriers home finishing 5th place overall. He was followed home by Neil Chapman (13th), Paul Jégou (18th) and Jason Cooke (19th). Next crossing the line was Frances Briscoe (29th) claiming second place in the ladies category, followed by Frank Briscoe (32nd), Chris Wilder (37th) and John Thornhill (39th).

Dave Wright (51st) followed in next, with Graham Wiggins (61st) not too far behind. Jeremy Smeddle led the next contingent home finishing in 94th place overall. Roger Turnbull (103rd), Jenny Pearson (126th), Michael Gallagher (129th) and Dene Stringfellow (131st) were our next finishers. Catherine Wainwright was the the Harrier's third female finisher who crossed the line in 141st place. Ana Ramos–Villeverde (166th), Paul Solerti (178th) and Marissa Essington–Boulton (181st) rounded off the list of our competitors completing the course.

top < Clarendon Way Marathon & Half Marathon ~ Sunday, 30 September 2007

The Clarendon Way Marathon and Half Marathon pass through some stunning countryside in Wiltshire and Hampshire before finishing at Kings’ School in Winchester. The route is described as mostly off-road, tough and challenging but possibly one of the most scenic races you’ll ever enter.

Paul Jégou was the Harrier’s sole representative in the full marathon race and he finished in a very creditable 6th place overall in a time over the 3-hour mark. In the half marathon event which started half-way along the full marathon route in the picturesque village of Broughton Tony Haupt finished 261st in the men’s event and Astrid Mehrtens-Haupt crossed the line in 89th place in the women’s race.

The Cotswold Classic is a 10-mile road race which is described as being scenic and rather undulating with 250 metres of ascent. White Horse Harriers were well-represented by the men with Jason Cooke leading the Harriers home once again, finishing in 20th place. top < Headington 10k ~ Sunday, 2 September 2007

This course, described as “flat as a pancake” by one reviewer on the RunnersWorld website takes the competitors around the airfield at Worminghall just a 10 minute drive away from Oxford. Being an exposed course the wind on the day may well have put paid to any efforts at improving personal bests, though.

White Horse Harriers were represented by Paul Jégou who finished in the top ten crossing the line in 8th position overall. Paul was followed home by Dave Martin in 189th place and our sole lady, Yvonne Pomeroy, in 264th position.

top < Ingli Runners RNLI 10k ~ Sunday, 19 August 2007

This race, in support of the Royal National Lifeboat Institute, takes place in and around Goodwick a coastal town in Pembrokeshire, South-West Wales, just to the west of its twin town of Fishguard. Despite the small field of competitors, the course proved to be quite a challenging, quite hilly one.

Simon Atkin, who fitted this race in whilst away on holiday in Pembrokeshire, not surprisingly was our only competitor finished in a very creditable 17th place just outside his personal best time for the distance.

The runners at the Hooky 6 this year again experienced the familiar sweltering conditions that are becoming synonymous with this event in recent years. The course was the same as for the County Road Relays held earlier this year except that the runners enjoy the prosepct of two laps of the course instead of one along the quiet country lanes surrounding the village.

At the head of the Harrier pack was Jason Cooke who crossed the line in 18th position overall. Jason was followed home by Simon Atkin in 86th place, Gareth Smith (89th) and Graham Wigginsin (102nd). A strong turnout at Yarnton ensured there was plenty of competition for points in the club’s road race championship. This is a flat course along tracks and on road which encourages fast times. Being an early evening start the conditions were a little muggy but otherwise good.

top < White Horse Harriers Club Championships ~ Thursday, 12 July 2007

The inaugural White Horse Harriers club championship evening which took place on the Thursday evening in place of the usual training session proved to be a great success. An excellent turnout from young and senior athletes alike ensured that there was plenty of competition as well as a good deal of banter, not to mention the odd bit of heckling from the juniors!

With the athletes competing in 3 events throughout the course of the evening (sprint, middle distance and shot) the competition was fierce in both the individual competition and the family team competition. A very big thankyou goes to everyone who helped to make this evening a great success. Many thanks also go to Barrie & Mary Strange, in particular, without whom this event would have been rather more chaotic and less well–officiated.

Over a hundred runners took part in the event this year, and despite the very wet and muddy underfoot conditions at the start and finish in Ladygrove Park following the rainfall over previous days the conditions were generally bright and dry. The course is flat and fast winding along the footpaths and roads around the park – a good course if you are looking for a fast time.

Simon Atkin was the sole White Horse Harrier at this year’s event. Simon completed the course in 30th place overall recording a time of just over 34 minutes. Simon even managed to sneak into the photograph of the start of the race! See if you can spot him here.

Our representatives in this year’s race were Stuart Shilston and Michael Gallagher. The conditions being cool with the odd spot of rain Stuart Shilston produced a fine effort to finish in 12th position overall with Michael Gallagher crossing the line in 189th place. top < Chiltern Chase 10k ~ Sunday, 5 June 2007

If you have never run this event you don’t know what your are missing. I can recommend this race to anyone. In my opinion this is arguably the best race in the Oxfordshire road race calendar both in terms of the course and the stunning scenery. You will not get bored running at Ewelme. The marshalling and organisation were excellent.

After Jason Cooke’s victory in the inaugural event last year Paul Jégou continued the White Horse Harrier’s early domination of this event by outpacing his closest rivals over the last half a kilometre, winning in a course record time. Defending champion, Jason Cooke finished in 17th place.

Sarah Baker lead our ladies home in 147th place overall and in doing so picked up maximum points to move to the head of the ladies’ road race championship standings.

Hopefully we can look forward to a continued strong turnout by our runners in the coming events and we look forward to seeing you all again at Yarnton next time!

Finally, congratulations go to Paul Jégou on his fine victory – the culmination of a string of top three finishes over the past month or so. An excellent result, Paul. Also, well done to all our other runners for their strong performances.

This is an extremely popular event in the Oxfordshire road race calendar as demonstrated by the number of finishers which exceeded 2,740 this year. The course wends its way through the historic city centre and back to finish in the University parks and, this year, the competitors were blessed with fine, warm weather.

This race saw the best turnout by our club members so far this year with a total of thirteen of our runners doing us proud. We also had our best turnout of ladies for some time which good to see.

Jason Cooke led the White Horse Harriers home finishing in 59th position overall. Next across the line was Simon Atkin (221st), who is making a strong bid for honours in this year’s club road race championship. Following Simon home were Graham Wiggins (304th), Jeremy Smeddle (329th), Lorimer Fellingham (368th) and Kevin Harris (822nd).

Our ladies were home by Jenny Pearson who finished in 843rd position followed across the line by Sarah Baker in 974th place. Pascal Malone led home the rest of the White Horse Harrier contingent in 1,133rd with Karen Malone close behind in 1,135th. Marie Rout crossed the line in 1,400th place followed by Jan McCabe (2,230th) and Lucy Smeddle (2,464th).

All in all this was a great effort by all our runners. Well done to everyone.

top < Marlborough Downs Challenge ~ Saturday, 19 May 2007

On Saturday a handful of our intrepid Harriers set out to run in the Marlborough Downs Challenge a multi–terrain event described as a scenic one lap route across the Wiltshire Downs, along Wansdyke and through Avebury Stone Circle. Two miles of the route is on roads, the rest is cross country on tracks or footpaths.

There are two courses – the short course over 20 miles and the long course over 33 miles (additonally takes in Devizes, Roundway Hill, Morgan’s Hill and Cherhill). Our representatives all close to run the short course this time.

Paul Jégou continued his recent run of strong performances with 3rd place overall (2nd in his category). Last of all, well done to all those who took part in this year’s event and we look forward to seeing you all again next time!

top < Club Cross Country Handicap ~ Thursday, 17 May 2007

After much hype and plenty of plugging the White Horse Club Cross Country Handicap was held on Thursday evening and witnessed what has to be a record turnout in my short experience. Thankfully the weather conditions this time were an improvement over last year’s wind–swept affair.

Despite the pre–race briefing with ordnance survey maps to hand it did little to discourage some of the competitors straying from the course and adding a significant number of additional miles which consequently ruined those participants’ chances! As it turned out Dave Martin last year’s winner was unable to be present to defend his title and up stepped Frank Briscoe to take the honours by making up a handicap of some nine minutes. He was followed home by Simon Atkin in 2nd place and Roger Turnbull in 3rd.

A big thankyou goes to both Dick Jégou (for his handicapping and officiating services) and Gareth Smith (for his organisation) without which this event could not have taken place. Last of all, well done to all those who took part in this year’s event and we look forward to seeing you all again next time!

top < Benson 10k ~ Sunday, 13 May 2007

With nearly 300 hundred runners taking to the roads in and around the village of Benson the roads there was bound to be some crowding. Judging by some of the pictures » of this year’s event it is clear the starter had some trouble as well! Even so the event proved a great success.

A fast start was obviously a key strategy here and it looks like that is just what Stuart Shilston got, who was flying the White Horse Harriers’ flag on Sunday. Stuart finished in 7th place overall a minute and a half behind the overall winner Andrew McKenna of Newbury A.C. In doing Stuart managed to win his category – an excellent performance showing he hasn’t lost his touch yet!

top < Icknield Way Half Marathon ~ Saturday, 12 May 2007

This race takes place over a multi–terrain course switching between roads, woods, fields and tracks, with the disconcerting prospect of a hill climb towards the end of each lap of this two-lap course! It is not a dull course, I’ll give you that, but is not an easy one.

A slightly disconcerting thing about this race is that it combines both a 10k and half marathon at the same time which could lead to pacing issues. Despite these hindrances Paul Jégou managed admirably well in finishing second overall behind Trevor Hunter of Handy Cross who repeated his win of last year. Gillian Cross followed up her performances in half marathons earlier in the year with another strong run in 80th place with Dene Stringfellow crossing the line in 69th.

The Street Olympix BMW Group Plant Oxford Mile road race took place on Saturday morning to commemorate the historic sub–four minute mile run by Sir Roger Bannister on the track at Iffley Road over 50 years ago. The event was presided over by the great man himself, both in starting the race and also presenting the prizes afterwards in his capacity as the patron of Oxfordshire Street Olympix 2007.

Frances Briscoe produced a battling performance against strong opposition to finish in third place in a time of 5:00. Frances finished behind Rachel Felton (— the winner of the ladies’ race) of Shaftesbury Barnet/Birmingham Uni/Severn and Kerry Harty of Newcastle A.C. who crossed the line in second place.

top < Mota–vation Series Race 1 – Charlton–on–Otmoor ~ Thursday, 3 May 2007

The first of the summer Mota–vation Series of races hosted by Kidlington Running Club took place on Thursday evening at Charlton–on–Otmoor. The course for the first leg of the 5–race series follows a figure of eight route looping through the villages of Charlton–on–Otmoor and Oddington. A strong turnout of runners ensured a competitive start to the series.

The winner of this race was Gary Harris of Headington Road Runners in a time of 20:51 with the first lady runner crossing line being Jude Craft, also of Headington Road Runners, who finished 23:40 (41st overall). Our only representative in this year’s race (— I sense this is an issue that needs addressing as it is another opportunity for team involvement!) was Jason Cooke who turned in another solid performance finishing in 29th place overall.

top < Quintiles Bracknell Half Marathon ~ Sunday, 29 April 2007

The Quintiles Bracknell Half Marathon was a new experience for our members as this is the first year, as far as I am aware, that this event has been included in the White Horse Harriers’ road race championships. Hopefully, it wasn’t too difficult a race to get to and our runners enjoyed their experience. (Is anyone interested in writing a report to go in the reports section?!) The fact that there were 717 finishers in this race gives some indication as to the popularity of the event.

Simon Atkin is the early pace–setter in this year’s men’s road race championship, building on his strong performance at Banbury, he lead our Harriers home to finish in overall 110th position, picking up maximum points in doing so. Simon was followed home by our resident half marathon specialist Lorimer Fellingham who crossed the line in 132nd place, with Jeremy Smeddle (163rd) and Graham Wiggins (245th) following him home. Congratulations to Karen Malone, first White Horse Harrier lady, finishing in 481th position just ahead of Pascal (— do I detect some pace–making?!).

top < Flora London Marathon ~ Sunday, 22 April 2007

The Flora London Marathon this year was not a race for the faint–hearted as the race conditions were probably the most demanding and draining since the event’s inception. I can honestly say I was glad I was watching the events in the shade and comfort of my sitting room rather than participating! It looked like a war zone out there! A record field of 36,396 people crossed the start line and it is interesting to note that the official website » does not specify how many actually finally finished!

For the record, our representatives all coped admirably under the adverse conditions although, generally, everyone’s times suffered in the oppressive heat. Jason Cooke, the first White Horse Harrier to cross the line managed to post a sub 3–hour time despite everything and Dave Knopp even managed to post a pb for the distance which was a tremendous effort. Our other Harriers — Ros Knopp, Sheila Bailey, Catherine Wainwright, Kim Newark, Terry Gashe, Conor McClure, Jenny Pearson, Jeremy Smeddle and Richard Horner — all reached the finishing line between the 4– and 5–hour mark. Good team grouping as usual!

Hats off to you all — a fantastic effort! I wonder though if any of you will be up for it next year!.

top < Oxfordshire County Road Relays ~ Sunday, 15 April 2007

The Oxfordshire County Raod Relays were again hosted by Hook Norton Harriers this year and after last year’s exploits the White Horse Harriers teams had a lot to live up to. The ladies team, our sole representatives last year, were defending their hard–earned bronze medals.

The setting of the small cotswold village of Hook Norton is ideally suited to road running as the roads and lanes in and around the village are relatively quiet in terms of traffic. The course itself is a reasonably demanding lap of approximately 3 miles taking in some of the inclines surrounding the village. The weather, however, was too good for comfortable running as the temperatures soared towards midday!

This year White Horse Harriers managed to field 3 teams (Men’s A, Men’s B and Ladies’ A) in distinct improvement on the previous year. The Men’s A team comprised Paul Jégou, Clifford Mills, Neil Chapman, Jason Cooke, Tim Traynor & Owain Bristow. The Ladies’ A team comprised Sarah Baker, Frances Briscoe & Ros Knopp with the Men’s B team comprising Stuart Shilston, Roger Turnbull, Simon Atkin, Dene Stringfellow, Frank Briscoe & Dave Wright. This was a strong turnout and we were quietly confident of some success.

As the races unfolded it was clear that the Men’s A and Ladies’ A teams were going to be in the shakeup for the prizes. Every effort on the part of all the team members was made to encourage our runners out on the course. It is amazing what a little cajolling can do to help the team cause!

In the end the Ladies’ A team managed to retain their bronze medal position of the previous year and the Men’s A team likewise earned bronze medals for their performances although they weren’t that far behind the leading two teams. The Men’s B team came in 4th in the veterans category.

It was all–round a very successful excursion to the Cotswolds for the White Horse Harriers teams and we enjoyed sitting outside on the grass in front of the clubhouse with our drinks in hand after the presentations were over and most of the other competitors had departed. Comments like being the fastest of the slowest runners were all taken in good heart as our sense of achievement sank in. This was an excellent, well–organised and well–marshalled event which we will look forward to competing again in next year.

This was an excellent result by our teams and congratulations go to all our team members. Many thanks also go to Anglea Briscoe, Dick Jégou, Gareth Smith and Robert Traynor for their assistance and marshalling which helped our teams to count on the day.

top < 25th White Horse Half Marathon ~ Sunday, 1 April 2007

The 25th running of the White Horse Half Marathon saw a field of 452 runners complete the course in changeable conditions. Having marshalled at the beginning of the race all I can say is that the eventual winner, Phil Sanger of Epsom & Ewell Harriers, had a significant lead by the end of the first mile!

The race did however bring some success for the home club as Lucia Singer led the way home with an excellent performance to finish in 125th place overall and take the Oxfordshire County Half Marathon title in the V35 category for ladies. Lorimer Fellingham was the first White Horse male runner across the line in 127th place followed in by Tom King (201st) and Peter Casey (257th). Clare Hazell (299th), Graham Wiggins (302nd), Gillian Cross (312th), Neil McColl (338th) and Jan McCabe (413th) completed the field of White Horse Harrier finishers.

The Reading Half Marathon saw another strong contingent of White Horse Harriers take to the roads. This is a very popular race that attracts a large field including international runners from abroad, so it was great to see our representatives doing so well.

Steven McGuigan led our runners home with a fine performance in 24th position. Jason Cooke was our next finisher in 81st place, followed by Mike Smith (1,070th) and Lorimer Fellingham (1,070th). Sarah Baker was first Harrier lady to reach the line in 3,076th place, followed in by Kim Newark (1,177th) and Jennifer Pearson (3,356th). Terry Gashe (3,446th), Tim Bardell (4,394th), Karen Malone (4,656th), Pascal Malone (4,660th) and Gillian Cross (5,909th) completed our contingent of 12 finishers in a field of 9,877 recorded finishers.

The annual spring jaunt up at Banbury took place on Sunday, 11 March and saw 380 finishers this year. The Banbury 15 appears to be a bit of a favourite with the White Horse Harriers and a contingent of seven of our members made the journey up the M40 to take part again this year.

Jason Cooke led our runners home crossing the line in a very creditable 10th place, followed in by Simon Atkin (116th) and Mike Smith (144th). Ros Knopp was first Harrier lady to finish crossing the line in 157th place, followed in by Jeremy Smeddle in 205th, Tony Haupt in 225th, Jenny Pearson in 245th and Sarah Baker in 269th places respectively.

top < Teddy Hall Relays ~ Wednesday, 7 March 2007

The Teddy Hall Relays took place this year in better conditions than the previous year and saw White Horse Harriers achieve its best ever result in the race to date. Our mixed team comprising Lucia Singer, Frances Briscoe, Stuart Shilston and Paul Jégou stormed round the course to take the mixed team title ahead of university teams from Bristol & New College MCR! This was a fantastic and fully–deserved result rewarding strong performances by the team members.

With over 170 university, college and club teams coming from around the country to take part in this hotly contested annual relay event the Teddy Hall Relays is an event of no little prestige. Our Men’s B team consisting of Kevin Harris, Gareth Smith and Dene Stringfellow finished in 87th place in the men’s team event despite one of our competitors having to run two legs!

This is an event that brings out the best in competitive team spirit and definitely one of the most enjoyable events in the calendar. The highlight of the race, unseen by many, but reported by the few(!), was an incident along the towpath beside the River Thames where one runner from another team tried running along some pontoons as a shortcut which led to an early and unexpected bath, much to the amusement of those that witnessed the event!

After the end of the race we all trouped off to Teddy Hall at St. Edmund Hall College for the post–race tea and presentations a great expectation. Some of us even sat at the high table before being moved on. This was probably the reason the mixed team prize was erroneously awarded to Bristol University! In the end everything was sorted out and the team members were presented with their prizes at a later date.

This was a brilliant effort by our mixed team to pick up the first team prize of the year. Congratulations all the runners on an excellent performance.

This is not a race for the faint-hearted. This race is one hell of a challenge ’ it can be recommended to anyone who likes to plough through thigh’deep mud baths, enjoy steep, near vertical hill climbs and feel at home in waist’deep river crossings! Despite this the race is an extremely popular event and with 740 competitors completing the course this is a testament to both the organisation of the event and the determination of the competitors

Leading our Harriers across the finishing line was Paul Jégou who finished in 19th position overall. Next to finish for the Harriers was David Knopp in 128th, followed home by Gee Bradburne in 170th place. Dene Stringfellow finished in 374th place and Michael Gallagher completed the Harrier finishers coming home in 511th position.

top < Goring 10K ~ Sunday, 25 February 2007

Being the second road race of the year in the Oxfordshire Road Race Diary this appears to be a very popular race judging by the number of participants this year. There were a total of 983 runners who completed the course this year. Described as an early spring race through the Oxfordshire countryside the course takes the runners out to South Stoke and back in a rather indirect way! Going by the winner’s time I would expect there to be some hills involved as well.

Once again Lucia Singer led our Harriers home finishing in joint 101st place with Simon Atkin crossing the line in 164th and Tim Bardell finishing in joint 347th place.

top < Highworth Team Half Marathon ~ Sunday, 21 January 2007

After a year of persistent badgering for team members the time had arrived to see if we were going to be able to field a team for this event! Thankfully my fears were allayed by some last minute phone calls and emails and the White Horse Harriers fielded a team of eight to contest the first team event of the year — despite the best efforts of a temperamental car!

I’m glad we made the effort as this proved to be a very friendly and well–organised invitation event. The course, although hilly and in some places exposed to the wind, was interesting and enjoyable, and the weather was perfect — a cool but bright day.

Our team finished in 10th place overall with once again Jason Cooke was first White Horse Harrier to cross the finishing line in 9th place, followed in by Lucia Singer (81st) and Conor McClure (87th). Dene Stringfellow was the next White Horse finisher in 105th place, with Roger Turnbull next in 117th place followed closely by Jeremy Smeddle in 118th, then Sarah Baker in 124th and Yvonne Pomoroy in 126th.

Although we didn’t win any prizes it was a great effort and good to be part of the team and we all enjoyed ourselves. The atmosphere and the warm welcome back at the Silver Threads Hall made the effort all worth while. A great effort, Harriers.

top < Goring, Woodcote & District Lions 10k ~ Sunday, 7 January 2007

This is the first road race of the year in the Oxfordshire Road Race Diary as well as being a popular one and was run in somewhat damp conditions looking at the photographs posted on the website. The route of the race follows a circuit of quiet, rural lanes ending back up in the village of Woodcote that amply described by the map shown here », although the map does tend to hide the nature of the course which has been described as 5k down followed by 5k up!.

Our two representatives this year were Lucia Singer and Dave Martin both obviously out for some early New Year cheer and trying to remove some of those surplus pounds put on over Christmas – they couldn’t have chosen a better race for it!

Despite the poor weather conditions both performed admirably. Lucia Singer crossed the line in 99th place overall with Dave Martin finishing 217th place out of field of 389 finishers.

Well done to both Lucia and Dave. I’m sure the expedition was worth it. I’ll have get round to doing this myself sometime soon.
