Club Cross Country Championship Standings 2008/9

Last updated: Tuesday, 2 December 2008
Two of our younger members competing at the 2008 Ascott-Under-Wychwood round of the Oxford Mail Cross Country League.

The fourth round of the Club Cross Country Championships saw a small band of Harriers – no ladies again unfortunately – take the trip down to Bournemouth for the first round of the 2008/9 Wessex Cross Country League season held at King’s Park on the northern edge of the town. The weather propects were not good going by the previous evening’s forecasts. The journey down to Bournemouth reinforced this as the clouds got darker as we approached the town.

Once we had arrived Paul Jégou (the fast one!), John Peake (the cheeky one!) and Dene Stringfellow (the rotund one!) ensconced themselves in the warm stadium cafe while Dick Jégou ate his sandwiches by the car! Dick soon joined us for a coffee a short while later. It was the only option to keep warm before we ventured out into the steadily worsening conditions.

With about an hour to go before the start of the men’s race we toddled off to race HQ where Dick organised the registration of our runners. By this time the weather was truly miserable – the kind of fine rain that cuts right through everything you are wearing. Plus there was a bitterly cold wind blasting across the course. After a while of standing round in the lee of one of the tents John and Dene decided they also ought to recce the course having spotted Paul disappearing into the distance – if nothing else just to get the blood circulating again!

The course itself proved quite an interesting one – not at all the unremittingly flat course we had been anticipating. The route took us pretty well around the perimeter of King’s Park taking a in couple of short, sharp banks as well as a steep drop down another bank to break up any rhythm the runners could settle into. By the time we arrived back at the tent there was still half an hour to go before our race – not very clever that!

To while away the time The Harriers stood around making the usual facetious remarks and trying to engage the opposition in some friendly banter/psyching out! The only problem was that it didn’t help in terms of keeping the freezing temperature at bay or the gradual drenching of the clothes. After a couple false calls for the start the runners eventually lined in what felt decidedly like artic conditions – the top of Scottish mountains have been known to be warmer!

After a promising start to the race Paul Jégou dropped back from 2nd position to finish in 5th place behind the eventual winner, Nathan Young (Mendip AC). John Peake finished in 13th place after a solid run claiming second position in the V40 men’s category. Dene Stringfellow came in last of the Harriers (again!) crossing the line in 30th position – in the last half dozen or so for a change!

Conseqently, Paul Jégou has extended his lead at the head of the men’s club cross country championship standings with another maximum points haul in the lates round. Dene Stringfellow has jumped to second place – by virtue of the number of events he has run in – ahead of Stuart Shilston and Mark Godden, third and fourth respectively. John Peake moves up to fifth place after his 14 point haul in this race. With respect to the ladies’ club championship it’s as you were with Carolyn Murphy leading the way ahead of Sharon Bedford and Marie Craze.

We look forward to seeing you all there at the next event enjoying the challenge. There’s nothing like bounding over the fields, through the cloying mud, into the wind and rain, and through the ditches and brooks! It’s all quite character building if nothing else!

Reports, photographs and results of any of your exploits throughout the season would be greatly appreciated by Dene Stringfellow and Paul Jégou – if you would like to see The Harrier continuing to flourish, you will need to continue supplying the material!
