Club Cross Country Championship Standings 2008/9

The White Horse Harriers young athletes all produced good performances on Sunday, 7 December at Culham in the second round of the Oxford Mail Cross Country League. A hard overnight frost changed the terrain to firm but lumpy instead of the expected deep mud, and bright sunshine made a welcome change from the heavy showers and gales experienced at this venue the previous 2 years.
The best of the Harriers’ performances was by Sophie Lloyd who ran very well, mustering a fast finish to place 2nd behind Beth Hawtin of Oxford City AC in the U13 girls’ race. Josephine Harrison 19th, Ellie Turner 20th and Fiona Linnard 28th completed the team, which finished a good 4th.
The U13 boys put in a very good team performance with 2 complete teams finishing. In the second–placed A team, first home was Zack Olliffe 9th in a time of 8:07, just holding off Matt Rose 10th in 8:08. Toby Bellerby 13th just made it into the A team having a battle to hold off Tom Ruddell 14th. Tom Froud 20th and Toby Howard 28th completed the B team which finished a good 6th out of 13 finishing teams.
The U15/U17 boys all ran well and posted a much improved team effort with James Belcher leading them home in 11th, Alex Mills 13th, Anthony Holmes 17th and James Ritter 19th for a team place of 3rd. It was a little disappointing though that we had no girls running in the U15/U17 event. Come on girls, your team needs you!
In the senior women’s race first home for the Harriers was Lucia Singer in 17th, followed by Ros Burgess 31st, Helen Brackenbury 41st, and Karen Froud 79th. The men had 2 complete teams of 7 finish with Job King 3rd and Paul Jegou 13th leading the rest home, with the A team 4th in Division 1 and the B team also 4th but in the 3rd Division.

Below are the tables for the club’s Junior Cross Country Championships for 2008/9 showing the current standings of our competing runners.
A reminder of the rules for the Junior Cross Country Championships:
- In each championship series race 10 points are awarded to first Harrier in each age group, 8 for second, 6 for third, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – and if there are more than eight Harriers in a race everyone will score at least 1 point.
- Championship series races are all the Oxford Mail Leagues, all the club timetrials, plus the BB&O and Oxfordshire Championships.
- Everyone scores an additional point for participation in any extra (non–championship series) races and a 3 point bonus for county selection.
- All school Year 4s (– and Year 3s if any younger brothers and sisters want to run timetrials) will count as Under 9s in our championship.
- The runner with the most points in each age group at the end of the season will be rewarded with a trophy (although runners must have participated in at least 4 events to be eligible for the trophy).
- Everyone who participates in at least 4 events will also receive a medal.
