Club Cross Country Championship Standings 2008/9

Last updated: Friday, 27 February 2009

Athletes on the climb up the hill from the start at the 2009 National Cross Country Championships held at Parliament Hill.

The National Cross Country Championships were held at Parliament Hill on Saturday attracting competitors from all over the country. The weather was bright and sunny for the most part, albeit a bit little in the wind. Our position in the lea of another club’s large tent on the hillside overlooking the start/finish areas was very snug. Underfoot however the conditions were soggy following the recent rain and it was clear things were going to deteriorate – although hopefully not on the scale of the Southern Championships held at Hillingdon!

This year we had a small team of committed athletes at these championships – Sophie Lloyd, Zack Olliffe and Alex Mills representing the juniors and Ian Brennan, John Peake, Dene Stringfellow and Graham Wiggins flying the flag for the seniors. Alex Brennan was also present to support his dad. This was an important exercise in terms of gaining experience in competing at a national level for our junior team members. Such experience will definitely be beneficial to their development.

Alex Mills was the first of our competitors in action competing in the Under 15 Boys event. Alex took a sensibly conservative approach to the initial climb from the start to settle into the middle of the main pack. Alex prodcued a solid overall perfomance to finish in 211th position out of a total field of 398 athletes in his event. He returned muddy–spattered and desparate for an ice–cream after his efforts!

Next into the fray in the Under 13 Girls event was Sophie Lloyd who seemed totally unfazed by the occasion and wanting to do well following her achievements in the BB&O Championships, Oxfordshire County Cross Country Championships and Oxford Mail Cross Country League earlier in the season. Again, Sophie took the sensible approach at the start and settled in towards the middle of the main pack. The coditions were clearly worsening as the day wore on. However Sophie produced the best White Horse Harrier result of the day by finishing in 124th place out of a field of 354 competitors.

Zack Olliffe had a long wait for his race in the Under 13 Boys event – the last race before the Senior Women’s and Senior Men’s races – spending most of the time asleep in the sun – casual or what! It must have been a little frustrating seeing the other junior competitors having their races more or less straight away. Zack took things in his stride and returned another solid performance by finishing in 198th position out of a field of 356 athletes.

By the time of the Senior Men’s event the conditions had deteriorated to general slop proportions – extremely heavy going especially on the lower sections of the course. John (The Late) Peake managed to show up just as Dene, Graham and Ian were making their way down to the start – he still hadn’t collected his race number! Fortunately, he just managed to get to the start with a minute or so to spare.

The usual “Charge of the Light Brigade” saw the men charge up the hill from the start to the bottleneck of the first turn down towards the cloying mud of the lower field. Ten kilometres of unremitting swamp–like conditions – it was very draining to say the least. John Peake lead the way across the line for our men finishing in 1,044th position. Ian Brennan was the next of our finishers competing in his first national championships in 1,263rd place with Dene Stringfellow the last White Horse Harrier across the line just over a minute behind in 1,305th position. Unfortunately, Graham Wiggins had to withdraw from the race at the start of the second lap owing to illness.

Many thanks go to the Briscoe’s and the Lloyd’s for their valuable support which was much appreciated.

Reports, photographs and results of any of your exploits throughout the season would be greatly appreciated by Dene Stringfellow and Paul Jégou – if you would like to see The Harrier continuing to flourish, you will need to continue supplying the material!

Below are the tables for the club’s Junior Cross Country Championships for 2008/9 showing the current standings of our competing runners.

A reminder of the rules for the Junior Cross Country Championships:

  • In each championship series race 10 points are awarded to first Harrier in each age group, 8 for second, 6 for third, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 – and if there are more than eight Harriers in a race everyone will score at least 1 point.
  • Championship series races are all the Oxford Mail Leagues, all the club timetrials, plus the BB&O and Oxfordshire Championships.
  • Everyone scores an additional point for participation in any extra (non–championship series) races and a 3 point bonus for county selection.
  • All school Year 4s (– and Year 3s if any younger brothers and sisters want to run timetrials) will count as Under 9s in our championship.
  • The runner with the most points in each age group at the end of the season will be rewarded with a trophy (although runners must have participated in at least 4 events to be eligible for the trophy).
  • Everyone who participates in at least 4 events will also receive a medal.

Please also note, if you find or are aware of any error(s), please inform either Dene Stringfellow or Simon Atkin so the results table can be updated accordingly – provided that corroborating evidence is submitted, of course!
