Club Road Race Championship Positions 2007
Last updated: Tuesday, 5 June, 2007The fine weather at Ewelme certainly drew an excellent turnout of our men, all vying for the points at stake in the club championship. With this being the second running of the event as well Jason Cooke having won the inaugural race for the White Horse Harriers last year our runners had a lot to live up to. They didn’t disappoint!
Paul Jégou flew the flag for the Harriers this year winning in a new course record time of 35:50 to keep the race in the family so-to-speak. Paul broke the finishing tape after outpacing his rivals over the final half kilometre. Jason Cooke, last year’s winner, finished in 17th position, ahead of Simon Leech (65th), Gareth Smith (77th), Jeremy Smeddle (76th), Graham Wiggins (77th) and Simon Atkin (87th). Our other men’s finishers were Dene Stringfellow (107th), Roger Turnbull (123rd) and Pascal Malone (283rd).
Another good turnout at Ewelme by our ladies has certainly brought an edge of real competitiveness to the ladies’ road race championship this year. In the absence of both Jenny Pearson and Ros Knopp Sarah Baker took full advantage with a strong finish in leading our ladies across the line in 147th place overall. Clare Hazell was the second of our ladies to finish (210th), followed in by Karen Malone (282nd) and Lucy Smeddle (373rd).
After the Ewelme round of the club championship things couldn’t be closer at the top of the ladies’ table with Sarah Baker now leading the way. Sarah has moved ahead of Karen Malone by the narrowest of margins – leading by just a single point.
