Club Road Race Championship Final Standings 2007

Last updated: Tuesday, 16 October, 2007

The final event of the club’s road race championships took place on Sunday with the weather unseasonally mild. It didn’t feel like autumn at all, which probably suited most of the competitors, although there were some grumblings of it being too warm!

Once again, the event organised by Oxford City Athletic Club was well-organised and well-marshalled. The only changes from previous years were that registration and results were located in the cricket pavillion instead of the village hall owing the ongoing flood damage repairs and there was a slight modification to the start and finish of the course to avoid a long loop round the field at the end of the race.

An excellent turnout by our members ensured there was plenty of interest, despite the fact that the outcome of the championships had been decided after the previous race at Witney. We were represented in the race by 14 of our men and 5 of our ladies, comfortably our best attendance at any of this season’s races.

For the men, it was Tim Traynor’s performance that stood out in 5th place overall crossing the line just over a minute behind the winner, Stephen Male of Oxford City. Frank Briscoe also produced an excellent performance to capture the men’s V60 category title ahead of Dave Parsons of Oxford City.

Our first four men home, Tim Traynor, Neil Chapman, Paul Jégou and Jason Cooke, also managed to claim third place overall in the men’s team event behind Oxford City and Witney Road Runners. Also, an honourable mention goes to Graham Wiggins for what almost certainly was a fine personal best for the distance in finishing 61st overall.

For the ladies, Frances Briscoe provided the outstanding performance of the day by securing second place overall in the senior ladies category finishing less than 30 seconds behind Jude Craft of Headington Road Runners. The post race and presentations gathering at the Black Horse pub in East Hanney for a drink afterwards was well–attended and rounded off a very satisfying morning’s work!.

Finally, congratulations go to Jason Cooke who has once again retained the title he has held for the past 5 years, and, after a consistent run of strong performances, to Sarah Baker who becomes the newly crowned ladies’ champion for the first time. Likewise, congratulations to Simon Atkins for taking the men’s veterans title in his first full season with the club, bringing to an end Jeremy Smeddle’s record run of 4 consecutive championships in the men’s veteran category. Sarah Baker also picked up the women’s veterans title along with the overall title.
