Club Road Race Championship Standings 2008

Last updated: Friday, 03 October, 2008

With the demise of this year’s Woodstock 12 the Blackland Down 8 event was added into the club’s road race championship schedule at short notice to ensure a full number of events were included in the championships. Having heard on the grapevine that the Blackland Down 8 is a demanding event this ensured that the event would be our replacement for the cancelled Woodstock 12.

With the weather perfect – cool and bright – the small but determined field headed out onto the roads and into the hills for a race to test the competitors’ mettle. From the start Paul Jégou moved quickly to the head of the field closely followed by the Harrier trio of John Peake, Simon Atkin and Simon Leech – all in the mix for this year’s veteran men’s title. It was not long before Paul started to pull away from the main body of the field along with his nearest rivals.

Paul Jégou reached the summit of the climb by the monument at the top of the white horse hill with a clear advantage over his rivals. However, despite a determined effort, Paul was denied victory at the end of the race through a combination of a niggling, recurring injury and the resurgence of his nearest rival to finish in second place. Paddy Paton (AFD) overhauled our man in the last 100 metres to take the victory by a margin of just 6 seconds in a time of 43:55.

The first lady was Emma Calderbank (Serpentine) who crossed the line in 3rd place overall well clear of her nearest challengers in a time of 49:27. Mandy Thorpe (Chippenham Harriers) and Nichola Newton (Calne R.C.) finished in 2nd and 3rd positions respectively.

John Peake – despite his distinct aversion generally to courses of non–undulating nature – outpaced his rivals to finish in 7th place overall having at one time been 3rd at the top of the climb. Simon Leech was the next Harrier across the line in the 10th position with Simon Atkin just over 30 seconds behind in 12th place. Jeremy Smeddle was the 5th of our runners over the line finishing in 25th position overall.

As for that Stringfellow chap, despite an early attempt to beat another Harrier this season for the first time, he once again succumbed Jeremy Smeddle’s superior fitness to finish as last Harrier in 27th place overall. All we can say about his performance was that at least he beat the dog! But, as John Peake thoughtfully pointed out, the dog almost certainly got lost!!

Below is the table for the White Horse Harriers’ men’s road race championship for 2008 after the ninth event of the season held at Calne on Sunday, 28 September.

Please also note, if you find or are aware of any error(s), please inform either Dene Stringfellow or Simon Atkin so the results tables can be updated accordingly – provided there is corroborating evidence, of course!
