Club Road Race Championship Standings 2008

Last updated: Saturday, 25 October, 2008 Sheila Bailey and Lucia Singer setting out at the start of the 2008 Abingdon Marathon.

The final round of the club’s road race championships for 2008 took place on Sunday under virtually perfect conditions – overcast and cool – although there were reports of a headwind out on the more exposed parts of the course. After the withdrawal of the race last year due to a lack of helpers it was good to see this event back on, particularly as it is a regular feature in our club’s road race championship calendar.

A small but select group of White Horse Harriers set off from the Tilsley Park Stadium to cover a new route out towards Radley, through Abingdon town centre, past Drayton and Milton Park and then back to the stadium. An enthusiastic crowd cheered the field of around 650 runners as they completed the initial lap of the Tilsley track before departing from the stadium out onto the roads. Our representatives who set out at the start of the race were Simon Atkin, Sheila Bailey, Paul Jégou, Lucia Singer and Jeremy Smeddle.

Unfortunately Paul Jégou was forced to drop out around the halfway stage while in the leading group of runners through a recurring calf injury and Lucia Singer also failed to complete the course through insufficient preparation. This left Simon Atkin, Sheila Bailey and Jeremy Smeddle to fly the flag for the Harriers and they didn’t disappoint. Simon Atkin lead the way home for the Harriers with a fine performance that smashed his personal best for the marathon distance by some 40 minutes to finish in a time of 3:34:42 – 260th position overall.

Sheila Bailey, the next of our White Horse Harrier finishers, crossed the finishing line in 316th position overall and in doing so captured the LV55 category title by a considerable margin. Her nearest rival finished some 34 minutes adrift of her! Jeremey Smeddle rounded off the list of Harrier finishers completing the course in 495th poisition.

The completion of this race brought the club’s road race championships for 2008 to a close. Paul Jégou had already secured the overall men’s road race crown ahead of Jason Cooke the current holder before the start of the race. Simon Atkin, in collecting maximum points as first Harrier home, retained his men’s club veteran title by a comfortable margin of 4 points at the end of as closely fought campaign ahead of John Peake and Simon Leech.

In the ladies’ road race championships Sarah Baker retained her overall and veterans titles despite not contesting the final event of the season. Sarah finished 8 points clear of Claire Hazell in a similarly closely fought contest.

This year’s club road race champions will receive their trophies at the club’s Autmun Social evening scheduled to take place at the Comrades Club, Newbury Street, Wantage on Friday, 28 November. We look forward to seeing you all there.

Below is the table for the White Horse Harriers’ men’s road race championship for 2008 after the final club road race championship event of the season held at Abingdon on Sunday, 19 October.
