Club Road Race Championship Standings 2008

Last updated: Wednesday, 15 October, 2008 Frances Briscoe holding the 2008 Hanney 5 ladies champion's trophy.

The penultimate round of the club’s road race championships for 2008 took place at East Hanney on Sunday and we were blessed with almost summer–like weather for the race. A tremendous turnout by our members ensured there would be a keen competitive edge to the proceedings particularly as things were tight at the top of the respective tables.

Frances Briscoe, appearing in her first club road race championship event of the season, produced a personal best over the course of 29:32 to take the women’s overall first prize and also lead our ladies to the women’s team first prize. The close finish of Lucia Singer (95th) and Ros Knopp (96th) ensured victory for the ladies team with a points total of 224 – a healthy margin over their closest rivals Headington RR (282) and Alchester RC (286) who finished in 2nd and 3rd places respectively.

Likewise in his first appearance of the season in a club championship counting event Tim Hughes lead the Harriers home to finish in 7th position overall and in doing so claimed victory in his category. The next Harrier to cross the finish line was Paul Jégou (13th) – dropping his first point of the season! – closely followed by Neil Chapman (15th). The men’s ‘A’ team secured the team 1st prize by the narrowest of margins – a single point – when Jason Cooke came home in 22nd place. Witney RR ‘A’ finished just behind White Horse Harriers ‘A’ with Woodstock Harriers ‘A’ finishing a further 6 points behind.

The other Harrier finishers among the men were lead home by John Peake (40th), who in doing so has edged into the lead by one point ahead of his rivals in the veteran’s category of the club road race championships, followed closely by Simon Leech (47th). Graham Wiggins was next in 79th position also closely chased home by Chris Webb (82nd), Hugh Owen (84th) and Mark Godden (92nd). And after their previous day’s exertions at the Chiltern League Cross Country League fixture Gareth Smith (124th) and Dene Stringfellow (127th) rounded off the finishers for our men.

The remaining Harrier finishers for the ladies were lead across the line by Sheila Bailey (107th), who despite being in training for next week’s Abingdon Marathon produced an excellent performance to capture the ladies V55 title. Next across the line for our ladies was Sarah Baker (159th), who now grabs the lead in the ladies championship in the absence of her close rival Claire Hazell. Castel Fairlie finished in 202nd position to complete the field of Harrier lady finishers.

With this result Paul Jégou has clinched the men’s senior road race title ahead of Jason Cooke the current holder with one race still to go. In the men’s veteran category things couldn’t be tighter going into the last race with just one point separating John Peake from Simon Leech and Simon Atkin.

In the ladies’ road race championship Sarah Baker has all but retained her title with one race to go. Sarah now moves back to the top of the table with a lead of 8 points over her nearest rival Claire Hazell.

After the presentations and ceremonies a good crowd of Harriers along with partners/family gathered at the Black Horse pub in East Hanney to celebrate over a drink and a meal. A great time was had by all. Congratulations again to our Harriers on their fine performances.

Below is the table for the White Horse Harriers’ men’s road race championship for 2008 after the tenth event of the season held at East Hanney on Sunday, 12 October.

Please also note, if you find or are aware of any error(s), please inform either Dene Stringfellow or Simon Atkin so the results tables can be updated accordingly – provided there is corroborating evidence, of course!
