top < Wessex XC League Round 2 – Langport ~ Sunday, 28 December 2008

On the last Sunday of the year the second round of the 2008/9 Wessex Cross Country League took place on the levels at Langport. The fairly flat course, deceptively tough, was a mixture of ground frozen solid in places where the sun had not reached and heavy mud. However on the plus side the conditions were beautiful and sunny albeit freezing cold.

In an effort to shake off the excesses of Christmas Paul Jégou made the long trek down to Langport along with Dick to take part in what would be his 83rd Wessex Cross Country League event. Clearly the conditions suited Paul as he spent the entire race battling it out with Doug Hall (Mendip AC), who is apparently a top triathlete, until he broke away in the last 100 metres or so to secure his first Wessex Cross Country League victory in a time of 27:18. Mark Lewis (Taunton AC) followed them both home to secure 3rd place in the men’s event.

John Peake who had been planning to attend the race in an alleged effort at trophy hunting failed to show up. It must have been man–flu – pathetic really! Dick reported that, strangely, they were held up both on the way to Langport and on the way back by serious traffic congestion on the A303 – it all helps to remember and savour the moment, though!

The winner of the ladies’ race was Naomi Taschimowitz (Taunton AC) finishing over a minute clear of her closest rivals in a time of 19:13. Rachel Heard (Taunton AC) and Rose Penfold (Mendip AC) finished in 2nd and 3rd places respectively.

top < Hooky Xmas Canter ~ Sunday, 21 December 2008

The Hooky Xmas Canter is hosted by Hook Norton Harriers AC and is described as a multi–terrain, hilly Cotswold run over 6 “country” miles starting from the sports and social club. In keeping with the festive nature of the race the prizes consisted of Christmas puddings, with a free mince pie and mulled wine available to all participants. You can’t argue with that!

Mark Shepherd (Team Kennet) crossed the line clear of his nearest challengers Nathan Holmas (Northbrook AC) and Richard Gould (Alchester RC) in a time of 41:17 to claim victory by a margin of some 35 seconds. Stuart Shilston, the sole White Horse Harriers representative in this year’s race, turned in a strong performance to finished in 10th place overall and in doing so secured second place in the men’s V50 category.

The first lady to cross the finishing line was Rachel Elliott (Team Kennet) who as 13th overall in the race in a time of 45:52. top < BB&O Cross Country Championships – Maidenhead ~ Saturday, 15 November 2008

The third race of our Club Cross Country Championship season, the annual BB&O Cross Country Championships, took place on Saturday at Braywick Park, Maidenhead under cool, dull conditions. Fortunately there was little or no rain to hamper the runners on a largely flat course which comprised two long looping sections, one of which appeared to be around part of a golf course.

Another strong turnout ensured that the White Horse Harriers were able to field teams in the majority of the scheduled events. The signs of improving attendance by our Harriers at the event over the past 2 years augur well for the future, particularly with the enthusiasm shown by our younger athletes.

The pick of our Harrier performances was Sophie Lloyd’s 6th place in the Under 13 Girls race who will have gained a good deal of experience from setting out at a searing pace at the start. Other notable performances were Matt Rose (20th) and Zack Olliffe (21st) in the Under 13 Boys, Bethan Murphy–Hand (13th) in the Under 15 Girls, Alex Mills (14th) in the Under 15 Boys and Paul Jégou (14th) in the men’s event.

The second race of the 2008/09 Chiltern Cross Country League season took place at RAF Halton, near Aylesbury with the threat of rain ever present as the low scudding clouds hugged the nearby Ridgeway hills. Fortunately the rain held off for the majority of the races although the ladies’ senior race was not so fortunate when the conditions deteriorated to virtually horizontal rain.

The Senior Ladies race was won by L. Bromilow (Milton Keynes).

top < Oxford Mail XC League Round 1 – Ascott–Under–Wychwood ~ Sunday, 02 November 2008

The 2008/9 Oxford Mail League season got under way with its traditional start on the hillside overlooking Ascott–Under–Wychwood and the surrounding vale on Sunday with the Harriers fielding a strong contingent of competing athletes. Despite the torrential downpours of the preceeding 24 hours the organisers and runners were blessed with remarkably clement race conditions albeit a little chilly and blustery. The watersplash at the bottom end of the course was somewhat deeper than usual owing to the recent downpours which certainly added extra interest for the spectators who gather in expectation!

In the U11 Girls race our Harriers were lead home by Levi Alder who crossed the line in 5th place among a group of five girls all of whom finished in the space 5 seconds. Likewise Christopher Druce lead the U11 Boys across the line to finish in 5th position followed by Jack Eggleshaw and Charles Harrison who claimed 10th and 11th places respectively.

Sophie Lloyd lead the line in the U13 Girls race with an impressive 3rd place behind Beth Hawtin (Oxford City) and Emma Piatek (Swindon Harriers) who finished 1st and 2nd places respectively. Zack Oliffe (9th) and Toby Bellerby (15th) lead our U13 Boys across the line in their race with confident performances.

In the U15/17 events Bethan Murphy–Hand produced a spirited run to finish in 9th position in the girl’s race. Alex Mills lead our athletes home in the equivalent boy’s race crossing the line in 17th position overall (4th of the U15 runners).

Frances Briscoe turned in another solid performance in the first ladies’ race of the season to claim 2nd place behind Rachel Elliott (Team Kennet). Lucia Singer was our next athlete home finishing 21st place, with Ana Ramos–Villaverde (98th), Sharon Bedford (108th) and Marie Craze (114th) rounding off the White Horse Harrier finishers.

Our men were lead home in the final event of the day by Paul Jégou who finished in 15th position three places clear of Job King. Stuart Shilston (52nd) was the next White Horse Harrier to cross the finishing line followed by Tim Hughes (61st), Matthew Hart (71st), John Peake (116th) and Dan Peace (127th). top < Abingdon Marathon ~ Sunday, 19 October 2008

This race is one of the most popular marathons in the country and after last year’s unfortunate cancellation due to the lack of helpers it was good see the event back in the race calendar this year. The course was altered this year and took the runners out towards Radley from the Tilsley Park stadium, on through Abingdon town centre, incorporating a double loop through Drayton and Milton Park and back to the stadium.

This year the White Horse Harriers had five representatives in the race: Simon Atkin, Sheila Bailey, Paul Jégou, Lucia Singer and Jeremy Smeddle. Unfortunately the course took its toll on two of our runners – Paul Jégou and Lucia Singer – who both had to retire from the race.

However there were some very positive perfomances by our remaining Harriers. Simon Atkin scored a huge personal best by finishing in 260th position beating his previous best by some 40 minutes. Following Simon home in 316th position and claiming the FV55 title was Sheila Bailey who finished well over 30 minutes clear of her nearest rival. Jeremy Smeddle rounded off the White Horse Harrier finishers with an unfortunately disappointing run completing the course in 495th position overall.

The runaway winner of this year’s race, competing in only his second marathon, was Steven Neill (Pudsey & Bramley AC) in a time of 2:32:25. Steven finished over three minutes clear of Keith Russell (Reading Road Runners) who crossed the line in 2nd place with Colin Paton (Army) a further two minutes adrift in 3rd position.

The first lady across the line was Samantha Amend (Handy Cross Runners) who finished well clear of her rivals in 75th position overall completing the course in a time of 3:03:44. Eirini Flouri (Headington Road Runners) secured 2nd place less than a minute ahead of Catherine Lee (Club Runners World) who crossed the line in 3rd place.

Blessed by unseaonally warm conditions – summer had finally arrived! – the annual Hanney 5–mile road race, which also doubles as the Oxfordshire county road race for that distance, produced a series for fine results for local club, White Horse Harriers AC. A strong turnout by our members ensured we would be competitive in the team events.

Frances Briscoe (33rd overall) won the overall women’s title crossing the line in a time of 29:32 almost three minutes clear of her nearest challengers Laura Kyte (OUAC) and Amanda Jane Saunders (Unattached). Frances’ victory paved the way for the White Horse Harriers AC ladies to clinch the women’s team prize ably supported by Lucia Singer (95th overall) and Ros Knopp (96th overall) finishing with a points tally of 224, well clear of their nearest rivals Headington RR (282) and Alchester RC (286).

The overall winner of the event this year was Steven Frear (Woodstock Harriers) in a time of 26:04 who finished 14 seconds clear in a closely fought contest with Paul Fernandez (Abingdon Amblers) and Philip Hails (Witney RR). In the men’s team event it was a much tighter affair with the White Horse Harriers AC ‘A’ team of Tim Hughes (7th), Paul Jégou (13th), Neil Chapman (15th) and Jason Cooke (22nd) squeaking home by just one point from Witney RR ‘A’ and Woodstock Harriers ‘A’ who finished a further 6 points adrift.

Tim Hughes and Sheila Bailey also produced fine performances to secure victories in their respective categories. Following the awards ceremony a good gathering of the Harriers decamped to the Black Horse pub in East Hanney to round off a memorable day for White Horse Harriers AC.

top < Henley Half Marathon ~ Sunday, 12 October 2008

Interestingly, this race is described as being through beautiful countryside with riverside stretches and just one hill of note making this a popular multi–terrain fixture among runners of all abilities. However on the associated RunnersWorld forum one contributer comments:

“The course is pretty much flat apart from a stonker of a hill at the 8 mile point to about 9.5 miles. Just keep a bit in reserve for it and be careful on the rather precipitous downwards slope afterwards.”

This year competing for the White Horse Harriers was Dan Peace who finished in a very creditable 68th position overall. The winner of the overall race was Jack Parslow (Unattached) in a time of 1:10:39 with the first lady home being Sarah Gee (Reading Road Runners) in 34th place overall and crossing the line in a time of 1:24:13.

top < Chiltern XC League Round 1 – Watford ~ Saturday, 11 October 2008

The first race of the 2008/09 Chiltern Cross Country League series was held in the grounds of Cassiobury Park, Watford. This was the first appearance by the White Horse Harriers for some years and despite the travelling distance involved five Harriers undertook the trip to take part in the scheduled races. With the weather and underfoot conditions near perfect for the races there could be no excuses.

In the junior races the Harriers were represented by Sophie Lloyd and (U13 Girls) and Zack Olliffe (U13 Boys). Following on from the promise shown last season Sophie produced a strong performance to finish in an excellent 17th position in a field of 99 in the Under 13 Girls race. The Under 13 Girls race was won by S. Draper (Harrow). In the equivalent race for boys Zack, experiencing his first ever cross country race, lead the field early on eventually finishing in 52nd place. The Under 13 Boys race was won by M. Goddard (Chiltern Harriers). This will certainly have been valuable experience gained for both our young runners.

In the men’s senior race the Harrier representatives were Jason Cooke, Gareth Smith and Dene Stringfellow. Jason Cooke finished in 124th place, with Dene Stringfellow crossing the line in 262nd place followed by Gareth Smith in 283rd position. The winner of the overall men’s race was A. Bowden (Harrow).

top < Blackland Downs 8 ~ Sunday, 28 September 2008

The Blackland Downs 8 is slightly misleading in its title as it is in fact a race of 7.25 miles in distance. However, once you’ve run the event you’ll understand why it’s named as it is! The course is described as very scenic and mostly off road over national trust land. The first half of the race is mostly uphill starting at 85 metres above sea level and climbing to 262 metres just beyond the hilltop monument! There is little traffic on the roads the course does venture onto.

Our representatives at this year’s event were swelled by the prospect of road race points at stake as the club championships approach their conclusion within the next month. This year the race was blessed with fine weather as opposed that experienced by the competitors last year when the race took place in November.

Paul Jégou was our first finisher in 2nd place overall crossing the finish line just 6 seconds adrift of the overall winner Paddy Paton (ADP) who completed the course in a time of 43:55. John Peake (7th) was the next Harrier over the line, followed home by Simon Leech (10th) and Simon Atkin (13th). Jeremy Smeddle (25th) and Dene Stringfellow (27th) were the other Harrier finishers to cross the line.

The first lady to complete the course was Emma Calderbank (Serpentine) who finished in 3rd place overall a long way clear of her nearest challengers in a time of 49:27. Mandy Thorpe (Chippenham Harriers) and Nichola Newton (Calne R.C.) who finished in 22nd and 24th positions respectively overall were the 2nd and 3rd placed finishers amongst the ladies.

The annual Ridgeway Relay organised by Marlborough Running Club took place on Sunday, 15 June this year. The conditions on race day were once again decidedly hot with occasional cloud cover for the most part, although the conditions did cool down and improve towards the end of the event.

As usual, the team was not finalised until a few hours before the day of the race – this is becoming a bit of a habit! Despite all of the traumas our team managed to improve on the previous year’s final overall position by finishing in the 13th place. This was an improvement of three places on the 2007 result which was a tremendous effort by all concerned.

The Marlborugh Downs Challenge route is described as follows: Two miles of the route is on roads, the rest is cross country on tracks or footpaths. Starting from Marlborough, the route goes through West Woods (CP1) on the Wansdyke Path, south to Gopher Wood; then over Knapp Hill (CP2) to Tan Hill (CP3). Here the routes divide, the 20–mile course heading north to Avebury. The 33–mile course goes further west along the Wansdyke before turning south–west to join the Kennet & Avon Canal into Devizes (CP4), then north–east over Roundway Hill and Morgan’s Hill (CP5) to reach Cherhill (CP6) and the White Horse. The long and short routes rejoin at Avebury Trusloe (CP7) to go through Avebury village and the Stone Circle. Finally go up over Overton & Fyfield Downs (CP8) and back to Marlborough Leisure Centre for shower and refreshments.

top < Carterton 10k ~ Sunday, 11 May 2008

This event has been well–received by competitors as being a small but very friendly and well-organised event. The course is described as fast and virtually flat on the roads to the north of the town centre, with plenty scope for producing a p.b.

Tim Hughes was our sole White Horse Harrier representative this year. Despite the extremely hot conditions Tim produced an excellent performance to win the event crossing the finish line 4 seconds clear of his nearest rival – Les Newell (Abingdon Amblers A.C.). John Atyeo (Witney Road Runners) finished a further minute and 16 seconds back to take third place overall.

Run on a scenic and undulating course, the Halstead & Essex Marathon seems very popular with the participants. It gets rave reviews on Runners World. This year’s race was run on the hotest day of the year so far, so the conditions did not favour fast times.

Nick Portsmouth was the sole White Horse Harrier this year. He crossed the line to finish in 294th position, recording a very creditable time of 4:43:27, considering the conditions. On the way, Nick raised over £1100 for the British Heart Foundation.

top < Oxfordshire County Road Relays ~ Sunday, 20 April 2008

After the blistering conditions experienced in this event 12 months ago this year’s conditions came as a bit of a shock to the system – damp and chilly. (I was glad I had my walking boots and plenty of layers on for the marshalling!). With five teams competing this year we were looking to add to our recent medal tally in the county road relays.

The girls and boys teams competed over a one kilometre course in and around the centre of the village of Hook Norton. Both events were closely fought affairs with the leading pair of teams neck and neck with just 400 metres to go and producing exciting finishes.

The boys team were lead home by James Ritter who outpaced his Abingdon Amblers rival to finish clear by 11 seconds to snatch victory. This followed on from excellent runs from James Rhodes and Anthony Holmes which set up the Harrier challenge for honours. James Ritter and Anthony Holmes produced the fastest boys’ performances of the day both under 6 minutes for their respective legs.

The girls ‘A’ team of Bethan Hand, Ellie Dykes and Sophie Lloyd were unfortunately pipped at the post by a strong Banbury Harriers team. Again, both teams were neck and neck with about 400 metres to go but this time our team lost out by just 6 seconds in a rousing finish. The girls ‘B’ team of Becky Holmes, Martha Dyet and Lucy Shilston finished in 4th place. Bethan Hand recorded the second fastest girls time of the day just 5 seconds behind Connie MacMillan of Banbury Harriers AC.

In the Ladies Veteran category our ladies team comprising Catherine Wainwright, Angela Briscoe and Ros Knopp turned in a solid performance to secure a creditable 6th position behind the winners, Woodstock Vets ‘A’. Radley Ladies were the victors in the Senior Ladies category hold off strong challenges from Banbury Harriers ‘A’ and Alchester ‘A’, who finished second and third respectively. Ros Knopp the leading Harrier lady recorded the 24th fastest ladies’ time of the day with her leg time of 23:23.

Our senior men’s team, which comprised Neil Chapman, John Peake, Terry Coakley, Mark Trott, Paul Jégou and Chris Wilder (– filling in as a last minute replacement after his Flora London Marathon exploits of the previous weekend!), also performed creditably to finish in 7th position overall behind overall winners Woodstock ‘A’ who held off the challenge of Witney ‘A’ (2nd) and Abingdon ‘A’ (3rd).

In terms of individual performances, Paul Jégou and Neil Chapman recorded identical leg times as the equal 16th fastest men.

Many thanks go to the organisers and all the helpers for laying on this event. The tea and bacon butty at the end of the event were very welcome and worth every penny!

top < Flora London Marathon ~ Sunday, 13 April 2008

Conditions at this year’s Flora London Marathon were pretty well ideal. Chris Wilder took full advantage to record a pb for the distance recording a sub–3–hour run for the first time, crossing the line in 797th position. By all accounts Chris was looking remarkably comfortable, if not relaxed, along the Embankment, which shows there should be plenty of scope for improvement!

Mike Smith was the second White Harrier across the line in 5,025th place. Mike was followed home by Philip Harrison (9,346th) and Jan McCabe (7,104th). That left Jason Cooke bringing up the rear in 23,562nd place who was running(!) with a friend.

The Chedworth Roman Trail 10 is described as a scenic 10 mile run through Cotswold countryside on the Stowell Park estate and around Chedworth Roman Villa. This year a field of about 350 runners set out to tackle the course.

Tim Hughes, the sole representative for the White Horse Harriers this year as well as coming back from recent illness, finished in a highly creditable 5th position overall. In doing so Tim comfortably won the MV55 category with his nearest rival by some 10 minutes.

top < Compton Challenge ~ Saturday, 22 March 2008

The 12th Compton Challenge incorporating the 20–mile and 40–mile challenge events took place this year in less than ideal conditions by all accounts. The sleet and snow surely helped to add a little spice to the proceedings.

Three of our Harriers braved the conditions to compete in the 20–mile challenge. Chris Wilder led our trio home finishing in 8th place with Andrew Cox following closely behind in 15th position. Our only lady representative was Ros Knopp who finished 103rd.

top < Clanfield Off-Road Relays ~ Sunday, 16 March 2008

This was the first time this event has been staged and we couldn’t have asked for better cross country weather! Graham Wiggins aborted his first attempt to get to the event due to the axle deep flooding in Challow. It was bad enough trying to get into Wantage. However, we persevered and eventually arrived without any undue problems albeit by a rather convoluted route.

Having just completed the registration of the teams shortly after our arrival the HQ tent, full of people at the time, was promptly lifted of the ground and depositied a short distance away! This all added to the pre-race atmosphere and reminded some of us of the difficult conditions experienced at Culham earlier in the season. As well as being very wet the temperature appeared to be steadily dropping too – uncomfortable to say the least.

The two Harrier teams were quite evenly matched owing eventually just finishing a few seconds apart. This owed much to the thorn Lucia Singer managed to pick up part of the way round her lap – may well have cost her the fastest ladies’ time – and which lead to a volley of abuse from her lips at the finish of her leg, the like of which had been unheard of before! Jason Cooke’s penchant to take the micky out of John Peake by slapping him on the back as he passed him on the final leg and then continued to taunt him for the rest of the lap also contributed to what culminated in quite a grandstand finale for our two teams!

In the end our mixed team comprising Angela Briscoe, Lucia Singer, Mark Trott and Jason Cooke finished in 5th place, one place ahead of the men’s team comprising Dene Stringfellow, Kim Base, Graham Wiggins and John Peake. The men’s/mixed team prize was won by Witney RR and the ladies team prize carried off by Woodstock Harriers. The drink at the Clanfield Tavern afterwards rounded off the event nicely. All in all this was a very enjoyable event and one which we look to be involved in again next year.

top < Inter Counties Cross Country Championships ~ Saturday, 15 March 2008

Six of our athletes made the trip to Nottingham to compete in the annual Inter Counties Cross Country Championships held at Wollaton Park this year. As always, the championships attracted a large and competitive field to challenge for the podium honours in the three age group categories.

In the U13 Boys category Matt Rose, the 8th ranked Oxfordshire runner, produced a strong performance to cross the line ahead of 3 other higher-ranked Oxon runners in 240th place. In the Girls U15 category Bethan Murphy-Hand bounced back after her disappointing performance at Liverpool last week to finish in 176th position, the fifth Oxfordshire finisher.

In the U17 Men’s category Thomas Joyce crossed the line in 253th position only to find that many of the runners he had passed failed to complete the course. Frances Briscoe had a disappointing outing in the Senior Women’s event finishing in 79th place – some way below her best. Owain Bristow, our representative in the Senior Men’s race, finished in 136th place.

Another large field of teams entered this year’s Teddy Hall Relays and again the event was blessed with pretty well perfect conditions for racing despite the chill breeze. We fielded 2 teams again this year – one mixed and one men’s team – with our mixed team out to defend the title they won last year.

Despite Tim Traynor and Robert Bowles running for another team – we’ll let them off for this abberation this time – our mixed team produced a very creditable performance in finishing 3rd in the mixed team category. Well done to Lucia, Frances, Simon and Frank.

Tim and Robert competed in a strong Fit2Run 1 men’s team that finished 5th overall, and our men’s team finished 92nd despite fielding runners who were just on their way back from injury. Particularly well done to Nick Portsmouth for breaking his course PB by some two minutes!

top < Oxford Mail XC League Round 5 – Horspath ~ Sunday, 03 March 2008

The final meeting of the Oxford Mail League 2007/8 series was held at Horspath this year. The conditions were reasonably dry underfoot with the weather bright and breezy.

Frances Briscoe (2nd – Senior Women), Josephine Harrison (7th – U11 Girls) and Tim Traynor (8th – Senior Men and 1st – U20 Men) all recorded top 10 finishes to help bring a successful conclusion to the season for our Harriers.

As far as the overall team results were concerned, Frances Briscoe (2nd), Lucia Singer (17th) and Josephine Rhodes (21st) secured the Second Division title for the our ladies this year, overturning the 4 point deficit at the start of the day. The men’s team, unfortunately, weren’t able to match the ladies’ success, dropping a place to 3rd in the men’s Second Division behind Swindon Harriers ‘A’ and Oxford City ‘A’.

In terms of the individual results, Frances Briscoe reclaimed the overall Senior Women’s title which she won 2 years ago. Frank Briscoe backed up his daughter’s efforts by taking the Men’s Vet60 title and Angela Briscoe achieved 2nd place behind Kate Williamson of Eynsham in the Women’s Vet55 category to make it a family celebration.

Other notable performances were Josephine Harrison (8th – U11 Girls), Bethan Murphy–Hand (9th – U15 Girls), Carolyn Murphy (6th – Vet45 Women), Tim Traynor (5th – U20 Men) and Rob Traynor (10th – Vet50 Men).

This was a tremendous effort and a vast improvement over last year’s performance. The thing that has definitely made the difference has been more of our Harriers out there competing. Hopefully, we can keep up the improvement next season. Well done to all our Harriers who have helped to make this season such a success.

Apparently there were quite a lot of runners complaining about the lack of mud at The Terminator this year. Course PBs by 20 minutes for some of the participants gives you an idea that the going was much better than in recent years.

The Harrier’s were well represented and were 4th in the team competition won by Team Bath. Maybe next year...

top < English National Cross Country Championships ~ Saturday, 23 February 2008

Alton Towers was the venue for this year’s National Cross Country. The course was suitably undulating with a hill on each lap which made the Cirencester hill seem easy.

Frances Briscoe finished 41st and Josephine Rhodes 173rd in the Senior Women’s race and Graham Wiggins was our sole representative in the Senior Men’s race finishing 943rd. The National is at Parliament Hill in 2009 so lets aim for full teams.

top < Meon Valley Plod ~ Sunday, 17 February 2008

The Meon Valley Plod is described as a 19.5-mile, multi-terrain event, which is very scenic and takes place near Petersfield, Hampshire. An alternative aspect of the event is provided in this report on the Portsmouth Joggers website! Admittedly it is from a few year’s ago but it makes very interesting reading.

Andrew Cox finishing in 32nd place was our sole, representing Harrier this year.

Richard Jégou was representing the Harriers in the M60 category shot putt. top < Norwich Union World Trials and UK Indoor Athletics Championships ~ Sunday, 10 February 2008

It’s not often that one of our own Harriers appears in the finals of a UK national event, this year the Norwich Union UK Indoor Athletics Championships were held at Sheffield and Tom Penfold, running under Birchfield Harriers colours, was competing in the men’s 1500m event. The championships were also doubling up as the UK World Trials and so there was plenty of incentive for the competitors to do well!

Having the advantage of running in the first semi-final heat Tom achieved a PB of 3:50.22 in qualifying by right for the final. He then backed up that fine performance by breaking his PB again in the final finishing in 7th place despite being impeded and jostled by the other runners around him in the early stages of the race. James McIlroy outsprinted Michael East and James Brewer to take the men’s 1500m title.

The 4th race of the Oxford Mail League series was held in the stunning grounds of Cirencester Park. Top 10 finishes were achieved by Frances Briscoe (1st Senior Women), Bethan Murphy-Hand (8th U15) and Robert Bowles (8th combined men and 1st U20).
