top < Andy Reading 10k ~ Sunday, 12 December 2010

A chilly day greeted our only Harrier representative, Dan Peace, who travelled to Little Chesterton near Bicester for the Andy Reading 10k.

This course is flat and fast and, in favourable conditions, will produce some very creditable times. Dan was no exception and knocked a considerable chunk off his personal best for the distance.

Well done to Dan on his excellent performance. A total of 443 runners completed the course at this year’s Andy Reading 10k.

top < Oxford Mail Cross Country League Round 1 – Ascott–under–Wychwood, Witney ~ Sunday, 7 November 2010

The 2010/11 Oxford Mail League season got under way with its traditional start on the hillside overlooking Ascott–under–Wychwood and the surrounding vale on Sunday with the Harriers fielding a strong contingent of competitors.

Congratulations to Tim Traynor on his 2nd place in the Senior men's race. His fine performance along with strength in depth from our mens team secured top place in Division 2, this bodes well in our quest for promotion into the top Division for next season.

Other notable performances were Ben Claridge's 7th (U13B), Sophie Lloyd's 10th (U15G) and Anthony Holme's 9th (U17B). This was a fine turnout by our Harriers with some fine performances throughout the categories, well done!

top < Longworth 10k – Longworth, Oxon ~ Sunday, 26 September 2010

In a race that has provided plenty of success for many of our runners in the past, our sole representative in this years renewal of the Longworth 10K was Adrian Evans, competing despite a full blown head cold.

Adrian continues to improve and was a little unlucky to be outraced towards the end by former National Hunt jockey and TV Presenter Luke "Leg Lock" Harvey! Adopting typical racing tactics, Luke sat in behind our pace setting Adrian for the majority of the race and waited until well into the final furlong before producing his well practised push for the finish to overhaul our galloping Harrier. Although losing out in this drive for the line, Adrian produced another solid performance to finish in 22nd place.

top < ADP Highclere Castle Muti Terrain 10K – Highclere ~ Sunday, 26 September 2010

On the last two occasions that Paul Jégou ran at Highclere, in what was then known as the Kerridge 10k, he finished 3rd and 2nd. To maintain the sequence, this time, he should have finished 1st. This was not to be, with Paul having to settle for 2nd again just behind the winner. His all too frequent problem with his legs robbed him of what could have been a race win.

Veteran Tim Hughes posted another impressive performance in 3rd place only 12 seconds behind Paul. New member Ian Rees raced yet again turning in a solid performance over a tough course which was not made any easier by the very cold conditions. Janene Pemberton and Jan McCabe completed the WHH line up.

top < Berwick St. James Pumpkin Run 10K – Berwick St. James, Wiltshire ~ Saturday, 25 September 2010

Graham Wiggins writes“ A bit hilly, something like the Toad Hall and Chiltern Chase type 10k races long, dragging, never ending climbs, which probably go a long way to explain the 48:40 I took to cover the distance, while finishing 15th of the 57 finishers which made me smile. It was en-route to a few days in Devon, and provided a good opportunity to break the drive and stretch the legs a bit. They had a 5k as well, for those who felt like a fast, but short blast”.

This looks like it could be a race for some of our Harrier pot hunters!

top < Woodstock 12 – Bleheim Palace, Woodstock ~ Saturday, 18 September 2010

Seven Harriers took on the penultimate race in this year’s Road Race Championship in the magnificent setting of the Blenheim Palace Estate. The race distance of 12 miles 198 yds is on traffic free roads and includes several inclines during the three laps of the race.

Jason Cooke made an appearance in an effort to foil Paul Jégou’s late effort to retain his championship title. Unfortunately due to sickness Jason was unable to complete the race, dropping out after one lap. Paul, who was two and a half minutes quicker than last year, moved from 7th at the end of lap one to finish 5th overall.

This result has almost certainly retained the title for Paul after an epic, season’long battle with Jason. Unfortunately, for Jason, the large lady at the back is just starting to warble ...!!

Dan Peace produced a solid run to finish in 25th place. Regular Club Championships runner Jan McCabe was our only lady to run on the day. Well done to you, Jan.

The first athlete across the line on Saturday was John Morrisey (Wigan Phoenix) who held off a strong challenge from local Oxfordshire athletes to secure his victory in a time of 01:08:06. Stephen Male (Oxford City AC) and Paul Ferandez (Abingdon Amblers) crossed the line in 2nd and 3rd positions respectively to guarantee their podium places.

The ladies were lead home by Jennifer McBain (Alchester RC) who recorded a time of 01:18:42 to finish in 21st place overall, well over two minutes ahead of her closest rival. Sarah Quantrill (Chiltern Harriers) crossed the line in 32nd place overall to secure the second podium spot with Charlotte Steptoe (Vale of Aylesbury) a further six places adrift securing third position.

top < Cotswold Classic 10 – Witney, Oxon ~ Sunday, 12 September 2010

Only three White Horse Harriers chose to tackle the challenging hilly 10 miles that make up the Cotswold Classic on Sunday last. This year’s race also incorporated the County 10–mile Road Race Championship as well as being one of the events that comprise the Oxfordshire Grand Prix series.

Although over a minute quicker than last year Paul Jégou, our lead athlete, failed to match last year’s second place, finishing sixth in 00:58:46 but good enough to secure the bronze medal for 3rd place in the County Championship. Nick Portsmouth had a good race, finishing with his best time out of the six times he has competed in this race since his first outing in 2002. Catherine Wainwright was our only lady representative finishing in 1:27:47.

The overall winner of the race this year was Oz Ellis (Abingdon Amblers) recording a time of 00:56:05 to secure the county title just two seconds ahead of his closest rival, James Bolton (Woodstock Harriers) who picked up the county silver medal. Mike Smith (Bourton Road Runners AC) crossed the line a further 39 seconds adrift to claim 3rd place overall.

The first lady home this year was Nikki Smith (Witney Road Runners) who secured vistory in the Open race with a time of 01:01:51 finishing in 14th place overall. Sophie Carter (Woodstock Harriers) was the next lady across the line claiming 16th position overall along with the county championship crown followed by Jennifer McBain (Alchester RC) who finished in 21st place overall to secure the final place on the podium for the ladies claiming the county championship silver medal at the same time.

top < Peasemore 5 Mile Challenge – Peasemore , Newbury ~ Sunday, 12 September 2010

Round 10 of the White Horse Harriers Road Running Championships took place at Peasemore on Sunday. Our runners were blessed with perfect racing conditions on the day. For one of our runners in particular, this race was a crucial one! Jason Cooke needed to be first Harrier home to return a maximum 15 pointer and keep up the pressure on his closest championship rival Paul Jégou, who was competing in the Oxon Grand Prix race at Witney.

However, there was to be a twist to proceedings with the appearance of club stalwart Tim Hughes, despite Jason leading Tim well into the 4th mile Tim gave his much younger rival a lesson in pacemaking and tactics to overhaul him and, in doing so, clinched an excellent 3rd position overall, winning the V50 Men’s category. This result has left Jason with a stiff task if he is to wrest the Club Championship from Paul and makes the upcoming race at Woodstock on Saturday a must win!

Adi Evans continues to make eye–catching progress and took full advantage of John Peake’s misguided decision to run around practically on one leg in his efforts to retain the Veteran Mens Championship. For Adi it was a rewarding race in beating his friend and rival, for John it was mission accomplished, but at what cost?

Another notable performance was that of Kim Newark who marked her return to racing following the birth of son Max by pushing him around the entire course in his buggy! She was lucky John didn’t need to hitch a lift back to the finish ...!

In a real tussle for the line Newbury AC athlete David Fry prevailed in an impressive time of 27:47, followed home by V40 Men’s winner Heath Bampton of Bristol and West AC in 27:51, with our very own Tim Hughes 3rd in 27:55. The first lady home was the unaffiliated runner, Nina Martin, who held off the challenge of a strong Newbury AC contingent recording a winning time of 33:54 to finish in 21st place overall. Sue Van Huyssteen (Newbury AC) and Marie Coultas (Newbury AC) secured 2nd and 3rd places respectively.

top < September Club XC Time Trial – Wantage ~ Thursday, 9 September 2010

The first of the Club Time Trials for the 2010/2011 cross country season took place yesterday evening and despite all the rain earlier in the day the atheletes enjoyed almost ideal conditions. It was also an opportunity to give the club’s new flag its first outing! Hopefully the flag will help to provide a much more visible rallying point for athletes during the course of the season.

As is customary we would like to thank the parents and everyone who helped on the evening for their support and assistance. Without this support and enthusiasm we would struggle to hold these events.

There was an excellent turnout on the evening for the first of the season’s Time Trial series of events with 47 young athletes taking part. There are scheduled to be a further 2–3 events during the season. These will be confirmed closer to the time.

Below are listed the first 4 in each of the races held on the evening. The full race results are available to download here ».

Seemingly not at ease with merely running, Chris Wilder has been adding cycling and swimming to his sporting repertoire. In what may yet prove to be a brief flirtation Chris tackled the Newbury triathlon along with old hand Jeremy Smeddle.

The last race in the 2010 Mota–vation Series took place at Oxford Harlequins Sports Ground on Thursday evening.

Although this race isn't a WHH Club Championship event it could be an indicator of some interesting races to come! Three of the leading protaganists in the Senior and Veteran Mens championships had somewhat mixed fortunes, Jason Cooke beating Paul Jégou fair and square with John Peake stopping at the 1 mile point with a torn hamstring. We shall soon see how this nip and tuck race for the title shakes out!

top < Hooky 6 – Hook Norton, Oxon ~ Sunday, 8 August 2010

The Hooky 6 constituting the 8th race in both White Horse Harriers’ Club Road Race Championships and this season’s Oxfordshire Grand Prix Series took place on Sunday over the undulating, 2–lap course starting and finishing in front of Hook Norton Sports & Social Club. The hot conditions provided a stern test for all the competitors this year.

Another solid turnout by the Harriers ensured there would plenty of competition for the Club Rodd Race Championship points at stake. Paul Jégou followed up his victory over the half marathon distance at Cirencester last weekend with a fine 4th place to clinch maximum points in his bid to retain his title. John Peake was the next Harrier across the line finishing in a very creditable 16th place, followed home by Simon Leech (40th), Graham Wiggins (127th) and Peter Bainbridge (138th). Well done to our senior men for securing 3rd place in the team event. Our sole lady competitor in this year’s event was Jan McCabe who finished in 197th position overall to pick up maximum points in the race for our ladies’ road race championship.

Having recently earned his selection for the England 50k team for the IAU World Trophy Final in Galway, Ireland later this month, Paul Fernandez (Abingdon Amblers AC) led the field home to record his victory in a time of 00:32:15 crossing the line 17 seconds clear of his closest rival. James Bolton (Woodstock Harriers) and Julian L’Homme (Headington Road Runners) were the next athletes over the line to record 2nd and 3rd places respectively. Sophie Carter (Woodstock Harriers) led the ladies home securing victory in a time of 00:36:25 to finish in 17th position overall. Jennifer McBain (Alchester Running Club), who picked up second place, and Kate Wright (Stratford upon Avon AC), who secured the third podium place, finished in 26th and 33rd positions overall respectively.

The fourth race in the 2010 Mota–vation Series took place on the roads just to the south of of Chipping Norton on Thursday evening. Starting and finishing at Chipping Norton Rugby Club over an undulating route and covering a distance of 4 miles 402 yards the course follows a triangular, undulating route out along the A361, then along Old London Road and back along the B4026.

Once again it was left to Paul Jégou and John Peake to fly the flag for the Harriers. With both our men currently placed just outside the top ten places in the overall tables for their respective categories, Paul (11th – Senior Men) and John (12th – V40 Men), they were both looking to pick up valuable points to improve their position in the standings. In near–perfect race conditions Paul Jégou led the way home for the Harriers crossing the line to secure 18th place overall with John Peake delivering another consistent performance to finish in 36th position respectively.

The overall race winner this year was Mathew Ashton (Aldershot Farnham & District AC) who completed the course in a time of 00:20:57 crossing the line 24 seconds clear of his nearest rival. Steve Naylor (Woodstock Harriers) and Darrell Bellinger (Oxford City AC) were the next athletes home to secure 2nd and 3rd podium places respectively. The first lady across line was Jennifer McBain (Alchester Running Club) who finished in 58th position overall with a similar margin of victory over her closest challenger recording a time of 00:25:54. top < Cirencester Park Trail Half Marathon – Cirencester, Gloucestershire ~ Sunday, 1 August 2010

Despite the ungodly start time of 9:00am two intrepid Harriers decided to tackle this interesting looking new event, held within the confines of Cirencester Park – a venue much beloved by our cross country runners. Although advertised as a half marathon the course was actually 13.4 miles in length. The course was a 2–lap affair entirely off–road some of it on grass but mostly over paths through the woodland.

Perennial off–road specialist Paul Jégou was joined by our newest senior recruit, Ian Rees, in a field of some 240+ runners. From the outset the lead mountain bike led the way closely followed by Paul who then began to steadily draw away from the field. By half distance Paul had already established a commanding lead of over three minutes which he then increased further on the second lap despite being hampered by his “traditional” problems with his legs.

Paul’s margin of victory over his nearest rival was a remarkable 6:48 – an outstanding performance. Lee Christmas (Stroud & District AC) competing in the Vet 50 Men class crossed the line in second position ahead of Steve Westlake (Unattached) who finished a further 49 seconds adrift to claim 3rd place. Ian Rees, our second athlete finished in 78th position overall in his debut for the Harriers.

In the ladies category the race was dominated by athletes in the Vet 40 Female class as Kate Wright (Stratford AC) led the women home recording a time of 01:32:08 to secure victory and 11th place overall ahead of Giulie Cumper (Unattached) who crossed the line in 18th position overall. Susanne Enhard (Compton Harriers) who finished in 22nd place overall secured the final place on the podium for the ladies.

top < Hornton Classic 6 – Hornton, Banbury, Oxon ~ Saturday, 17 July 2010

Race 8 of the White Horse Harrier Road Race Championships took place at the Hornton Classic 6 on Saturday evening. This is a fanatasticly well organised event run by Cherwell Runners & Joggers. This is a notoriously tough road race with several testing hills with the majority of the race being devoid of any flat sections. It does, however, have the bonus of a very sharp descent to the finish for those with spectacular sprint finish ambitions!

The winner was Woodstock Harriers’ Steve Naylor in an impressive time of 32:20. In a fine 5th place and first Harrier home was Paul Jégou in 34:30 with Jason Cooke as the next Harrier home in 8th place followed by John Peake in 14th. Simon Leech completed this challenging 6 miler in 43rd place. Unfortunately, the ladies were conspicuous by their absence, although one of our ladies DID make the journey but couldn’t raise the enthusiasm to jog around for a certain 15–pointer in the Club Road Race Championships ...!

A great feature of this event is the post race barbeque for runners and spectators alike, just bring your own food and make full use of the generously sized barbies that are provided, with the licensed bar and free overnight camping many clubs enjoy the social get together of this event.

top < Hughenden Manor 10k – Hughenden Manor, High Wycombe ~ Sunday, 11 July 2010

Simon Atkin has been venturing further afield in his quest for races. Rumours that this is to avoid bumping into fellow White Horse Harrier rivals are surely unfounded?

Simon reports: “The route was rather attractive in the woods and grounds of National Trust property Hughenden Manor. Underfoot the terrain was very similar to Ewelme, a mixture of grass, metalled tracks and woodland paths. But the course profile is a bit steeper. The organisers described a hill in the first kilometre, then undulating. Undulating!?! After the first 0.5km the course rose steeply for nearly a 1km, then another climb at 6.5km. A descent from 8-9km was deceptive as it was followed by another steep climb, but there was a nice downhill finish!

My time of 50:35 looks a bit slow, but considering the terrain and heat I was quite pleased. To put it in perspective the winner’s time was 37:50. The course was well marked and easy to follow even with few marshalls. A lovely run in the country but would be very testing in wet conditions.–

It is good to see Simon out racing again after a prolonged battle with injuries over the past year.

top < Adderbury Half Marathon – Lucy Placketts Playing Field, Adderbury ~ Oxon ~ Saturday, 10 July 2010

Another hot, sunny day for Harriers competing in the 3rd running of the Adderbury Half Marathon. This is an off–road event that can best be described as challenging and, with the prevailing weather conditions, a stern test of fitness and mental fortitude.

This route begins gently enough with a relatively flat initial 4 miles or so running along the tow path of the Oxford Canal. This is the calm before the storm as notable undulations and positively hilly sections then appear. Add to this the final 3 miles which cross through numerous fields, gates, styles and cattle grids things become somewhat less than enjoyable. The irony of this event is that in the final 400 yards you pass through the church graveyard! It is then sharp left onto the playing field and a short burst, accompanied by loudspeaker running commentary, to the finish.

The winner was Tim Wright (Banbury Harriers) in an impressive time of 1:19:50. In a fine second place and first Harrier home was Jason Cooke, with John Peake again chasing him home in a creditable 3rd place. It was great to see these two collecting their hard earned prizes, which were of rather a good quality, and representing White Horse Harriers so well at this event.

Three of our ladies ran with the evergreen Sheila Bailey putting her younger rivals Sarah Baker and Jan McCabe in their place with a thoroughly gutsy run in the tough conditions.

Jason Cooke, in winning the race outright, led home the Harriers in this new addition to the Club Road Race Championships, our 6th event in this series. It is fair to say that from an organisational and marshalling point of view this race has some room for improvement with a good number of runners getting lost!

Paul Jégou and Jan McCabe, amongst others, took a more scenic route than required and lost themselves vital places in the race. Sadly lacking in any first aid facilities any runners with bumps or scrapes due to the testing underfoot conditions weren’t catered for at all.

First Harrier Lady home was Sarah Baker, an impressive maximum 15–point winning double for the Cooke–Baker alliance!

John Peake and Adi Evans chose to miss out on the Club Championship race at Watlington for the softer option of a trot around the village roads and parkland of Long Wittenham in its annual 5k Fun Run.

In defence of our two stalwart veterans it was their 3rd race in 4 days! They performed with great credit, John winning the race outright in 18:29 ably backed up by the ever–improving Adi coming home in 2nd place in 19:43, with Josh Beech (Abingdon Amblers) in 3rd place in 19:49.

The race starts and finishes at The Plough public house and follows a route left up the main street then crossing over into the Northmoor Trust Park where the route follows twisting tracks. top < BMAF Track & Field Championships – Cardiff International Sports Stadium, Wales ~ Saturday, 3 July – Sunday, 4 July 2010 ~

Richard Jégou reports “This year the British Championship moved from the scruffy Alexexander Stadium, Birmingham to the impressive Cardiff International Sports Stadium. Sadly, my performance on day one in the discus did not match the venue. Throwing from a circle outside the main stadium I totally failed to cope with a surface that only Torville and Dean would have been happy on. A miserable 8th place with 30.62m was all I deserved. On Sunday I woke up feeling distinctly under the weather. First event being the Hammer at 9:30am was not much of a help. I only managed one half decent throw out of six but was lucky enough to secure the bronze medal in 3rd place with a throw of 30.08m. Because of the large number of throwers in our pool we went straight across to the shot putt without a break. This is normally my best event, I can’t remember the last time I threw less than 10 m. At the end of round 4 I had only managed 9.99m, this might just get 3rd place resulting in my 7th bronze medal this year in a British Championship. Fortunately I managed one reasonable throw in round 5 of 10.54m, enough for second place and the silver medal. The final event, the heavy hammer, followed immediately resulting in a feeble 10.42m for 5th place. I have never been so shattered at the end of competition in my life! The highlight of the day was undoubtedly the heavy hammer (weight) where my group, the M65s were in the same pool as the M60s. The British record was beaten 5 times by 3 different athletes with victory being snatched by BBC commentator Paul Dickenson, an ex–international, in the last round of the competition.”

top < The Compton Canter 9.3K – Compton, Berkshire ~ Saturday, 3 July 2010

Warm and breezy conditions for 5th running of The Compton Canter 9.3k multi–terrain race. This is another fine local event run by Compton Harriers starting and finishing on the village green during the festivities of the village fete. The real challenge arrives just after 1.5 miles when Lowbury Hill appears dead ahead, once conquered there is a relatively kind descent until another hill appears, not as challenging though, further descent then another less taxing hill. More farm tracks, field crossings then a turn back onto road and back into Compton, cruelly straight past a pub! It is then a short dash to the village green, around the perimeter and to the finish.

Unfortunately, after winning this race every year since its inception in 2006, White Horse Harriers were unable to produce the outright winner this year. The honours were taken by Matthew Wells in 35:02 in a tight finish from Guy Watts in 35:06 and 3rd placed James Craggs in 35:09. We were, however, ably represented by John Peake who claimed 5th place overall in 35:50, and, in doing so, won the Vet 40 category, Dan Peace claimed 6th place on his return to racing following his London Marathon exploits. Adi Evans again produced an improved time performance in 10th place, 2nd Vet 40, and continues to knock chunks off his race times.

Pencil this race in for next year as it is an ideal event for runners with families who are able to enjoy a traditional style village fete whilst the running members of the family can experience a rewarding run in beautiful Berkshire downland.

Our ten White Horse Harrier team members produced a gritty performance to finish in 13th position of the 38 teams competing in the Ridgeway Relay on Sunday.

This was also our 3rd fastest ever time for this challenging course.

Special thanks go to Dene Stringfellow. Without Dene’s monumental organisational efforts we simply wouldn’t be able to enjoy this fantastic event, how he remains so calm with all the challanges and obstacles us Harriers throw at him I will never know! Well done Dene.

Ideal conditions, warm but with periods of cloud cover, greeted competitors for the Chiltern Chase 10k. This challenging multi terrain race formed the fourth of our Club Championship races this season.

Seven Harriers pulled on their running shoes to battle it out for honours. First harrier home was Jason Cooke with a solid performance finishing in 5th place overall with longstanding club rival John Peake chasing him home in 9th. Adi Evans continues to progress after an injury hit early season with an encouraging 28th place, a noteable improvement on his performance in this race last year.

Three of our Ladies rallied to the call with Sarah Baker outbattling her Harrier rivals to finish in 183rd from Karen Froud in 195th and Jan McCabe in 219th.

top < Thames Run 10k – Howbery Park, Wallingford ~ Sunday, 6 June 2010

Overcast and certainly very warm conditions greeted both of our Harrier representatives in the Thames Run 10k.

This race starts and finishes in Howbery Park, Crowmarsh and follows a somewhat twisting course over roads, tracks, paths, fields, bridges and gates, so plenty of distractions to stop any chance of boredom!!

Despite the challenging course both of our Harriers, John Peake and Simon Leech renewed their rivalries and recorded very respectable times. The winner was Julien L’;Homme (Headington Road Runners) in 34:16 followed home by Simon Fisher (Abingdon Amblers) in 34:36 with Liam Proudlock in 3rd position 35:34. It was great to see Simon competing again, after such a long time out with an injury niggle.

The week’s exertions don’t seem to be affecting the consistantly high levels of performance by Paul, especially on his preferred “off road” surface. The overall race winner was Tom Fisher (Avon Valley Runners) in 56:37, followed home by Gary O’Brian (Swindon Harriers) in 2nd place in 57:47.

top < Barrie Strange Memorial Throws Meeting – Horspath Stadium, Oxford ~ Saturday, 29 May 2010

Richard Jégou reports; "I was privileged to take part in the Barrie Strange Memorial Throws Meeting held in memory of my old friend and our Club President Barrie Strange. His widow Margaret was in attendance as well as his daughter Alex and his grandchildren. Over 80 throwers took part in spite of the wet, cold and windy conditions, all appreciative of having 6 throws each in every event. I enjoyed somewhat mixed fortunes. The first event was the Hammer held in the worst of the weather and with the large number of competitors meant a rather long wait between throws. The Shot went much more smoothly, the rain had abated and the number of throwers in the pool was much smaller, though I was rather disappointed with my series of throws. The Discus took place in the dry with a strong head wind blowing into the throwers' faces, perfect conditions provided the Discus is flighted correctly. My earlier frustrations soon disappeared as 5 of my 6 throws beat my old Personal Best and improved the M65 Club Discus record."

top < Summer Cross Country Handicap – Sparsholt Firs, Wantage ~ Thursday, 20 May 2010

A perfect sunny evening greeted our seven Harrier representatives eager to battle it out for the coveted Piece’s Trophy and, may I add, this certainly is the most impressive of the trophies available from the Club. The real attraction to this Handicap race is that literally ANYBODY in the Club can win it, never more so than under the strict, and surprisingly accurate, handicapping regime of John Peake. There have been some very close, blanket finishes to these handicaps in recent years just ask Richard Jégou, timekeeper of the New Year’s Day Handicap!

This race was also to provide a grandstand finish! Pete Bainbridge was so far clear of the field at Gramps Hill that rumours were circulating of a serious handicapping error! No sooner than these doubts had begun to surface it became clear that Jason Cooke was on a mission by making up ground hand over fist. With the finish in sight Pete was absolutely all out to repel the charging Jason, alas it was all in vain as, complete with impish grin, Jason surged past to take victory. However, the performance of equal, if not even greater, merit went to Paul Jégou who put in a stunning run to record a time that puts him 3rd on the all time record list for this course, behind club legends Pete Wilson and Derek Green! Jason’s time also got him into the top ten list, so this was a very competitive race indeed.

It would be lovely to get more Harriers doing this event, it is a shame that we can regularly get more runners out doing a Thursday night training run than a Club event on the same night at the same time, and the chance to win a cracking big silver Trophy! Go on, make a mental note to try it next year, you will need to be in it to have an EQUAL chance of winning it!

top < Charndon 5k – Charndon, Bicester ~ Tuesday, 18 May 2010

Absolutely perfect running conditions were enjoyed by our seven Harrier representatives at the Charndon 5k on Tuesday evening. This race represented the third of our Club Road Race Championship and was sure to encourage some fast times and competitive racing.

Ultra–consistant Harrier Paul Jégou rolled back the years and ran his fastest 5k since being a teenager! Paul finished in an impressive 6th position overall, next Harrier home was Jason Cooke with a solid performance in 13th. John Peake produced yet another personal best time to finish in 23rd, a mere 3 seconds away from winning 3rd place in the V40 category, Jason Cooke pointed out that he should have tried harder ...!

It appears that some of our older runners are getting better with age!

Local team Alchester Running Club organise this efficiently run event. This race is one for the speedsters around and is over in a flash, albeit a painful one! The course is quite undulating but certainly not hilly with the start being particularly quick due to the slight descent that often gets runners setting off far too quickly, fast times are certainly achievable.

top < Oxfordshire County Track & Field Championships – Horspath Stadium, Oxford ~ Saturday, 8 – Sunday, 9 May 2010

Despite the awful weather conditions, especially on Saturday, White Horse Harriers had a good weekend at the Oxfordshire County Track and Field Championships, picking up 12 titles. It was an especially productive weekend for the Jégou family. Paul, who competed as a Senior Man despite being a veteran, was rewarded by winning gold in both the 3000m and the 5000m. Meanwhile his father, Richard, ignored the poor weather and slippery throwing circle to defend his titles in the Shot and Discus, recording season’s bests in both. The winning Discus throw was also a club record.

John Peake took the long jump and 400m titles in the Vet 35 category, the latter involving quite a tussle with club mate Neil Druce. Neil did, however, secure gold in the following days 800m in the same age class. Christopher Druce made it another family affair when he picked up gold in the U13 Boys long jump.

In the U13 Boys 200m, Ryan Craze came out on top, while Ben Little lifted the U15 Boys high jump crown. The Harriers’ U17 men won gold and silver in the 1500m with Mitch Lomas taking the 1500m title, beating Alex Mills into silver. Alex Mills went one better in the 3000m claiming gold in the U17 Mens category. James Ritter claimed silver in the high jump.

Although we had no outright winners in the girls team, Sophie Lloyd came home with a silver medal in the U15 Girls 1500m, while Becky Hodgson did the same in the U17 Women’s 200m.

Although up against the worst weather conditions in this race for several years our five Harriers performed with some credit.

Another personal best for John Peake took him into 8th place out of the 560 runners. Junior athlete Tom Froud made an encouraging effort at this trip by finishing in a creditable 113th place.

This is a first class event that is very well organised and staged in the beautiful grounds of Blenheim Palace. An added bonus with this race is that your race number allows you, and your fellow car passengers, free entry into the grounds and facilities of Blenheim Palace, making this an exceptionally good value race.

Conditions for the first race of the Mota–vation Series and our second Club Road Race Championship event were less than ideal with a cool and blustery wind. Undeterred, our Harriers performed with credit over the relatively flat, fast roads around Charlton–on–Otmoor.

Bragging rights were earned by Paul Jégou finishing just 6 seconds ahead of title rival Jason Cooke, this season certainly looks to be shaping into a good battle between these two title protaganists.

top < East Hagbourne Fun Run – East Hagbourne, Didcot ~ Monday, 3 May 2010

The 20th running of the ever popular East Hagbourne Fun Run took place on Bank Holiday Monday in somewhat blustery conditions. Six of our Harriers braved the testing mix of tracks, pathways and stiles that had been affected to varying degrees by the recent rain. In the absence of Tim Traynor, perennial winner of this run in recent years for White Horse Harriers, there was going to be a new name on the Trophy. Honours went to Stephen Copley (Abingdon Amblers AC) winning in a time of 27:44.

Our competitors comprised in equal measure of juniors, seniors and veterans. This year, however, it was the turn of the veteran John Peake to turn the tables on his closest Harrier rival on the day, junior athlete Anthony Holmes, in a reversal of last year’s sprint finish that Anthony had won. This time John prevailed with a margin of 29 seconds over Anthony and in doing so claimed second place outright and winning the veteran men’s category. Anthony claimed 4th position overall, not to be outdone Alex Mills finished in a fine 6th position overall and claimed the Under 16 Boys trophy.

It was pleasing to see Adi Evans making strides on his comeback from injury, finishing in a creditable 16th position, backed up with another solid performance from Graham Wiggins in 22nd.

The race was won in convincing style by Ethiopian athlete Tsegaye Kebede in a blistering time of 2:05:19 just shy of the course record, defeating 2nd placed Emmanuel Mutai of Kenya 2:06:23 with Jaouad Gharib of Morocco in 3rd in 2:06:55

In the Ladies’ race Russian athlete Liliya Shobukhova 2:22:00 prevailed after a titanic battle with fellow compatriot Inga Abitova 2:22:19 with Ethiopian athlete Aselefech Mergia 2:22:38 in 3rd.

Our Harriers contributed with their own impressive performances, none more so than Dan Peace shattering his Marathon P.B. with an excellent time of 2:59:11 in finishing in 1044th position. Next in for the Harriers was Paul "Danger Mouse" Jégou finishing in 3:46:13, this was an epic performance for someone dressed in full Danger Mouse garb! In completing this arduous task Paul has raised several thousand pounds for his chosen charity, Helen and Douglas House, well done Paul! Solid performances were also given by Hugh, Jeremy and Jill with special mention going to Clare Hazell for an excellent effort in her Marathon debut!

Well done Harriers one and all, we are proud to be associated with you!

top < Lambourn 6K – Lambourn ~ Sunday, 25 April 2010

Three of our Harriers chose to avoid the mayhem of London and the daunting 26.2 miles that other, more ambitious Harriers took on. Those choosing to attempt the somewhat less arduous task of completing 6 kilometers of undulating terrain in and around Lambourn were Chris Wilder, Graham Wiggins and John Peake.

First Male home in a very respectable time of 20.57 was Thomas Watkins from Newbury AC. Second place went to local man Andrew James from East Garston in 21.45 and 3rd Male, our very own White Horse Harrier Chris Wilder in 21.59 First Female and highly placed 9th overall, was Reading AC runner Sue Francis from Goring in a time of 25.09. Second Female was Joanne Rose from Bampton in 26.01 and 3rd Female, Sarah Hall in 29.54. 1st Male Vet and 4th overall was White Horse Harrier John Peake, from Chilton in 22.19 and First Female Vet Therese Kehoe in 30.16. The under 18 trophy was awarded to Alex Bampton from Chisledon who achieved 6th place overall. Graham Wiggins produced another solid performance in 16th despite having recently donated blood.

This local and well organised race really does deserve a higher volume of runners, literally catering very well for all standards.

top < Oxfordshire County Road Relays – Hook Norton ~ Sunday, 18 April 2010

The Oxfordshire County Road Relays again attracted some top quality teams and some very competitive races were run in near perfect conditions.

Plaudits go to the fantastic battle that took place between Abingdon Amblers and Oxford City A.C. After an incredible tussle over the six leg relay Abingdon managed to overhaul Oxford part way into the final leg winning the title outright in an excellent time of 1:45:50.

The best Harrier team performance of the day goes to our Veteran Ladies team of Sheila Bailey, Ros Burgess and Clare Hazell who placed an excellent third, securing County Bronze with a fine performance to usurp some of our larger Club rivals including none other than Oxford City, Witney and Alchester! What an excellent performance, well done!

Our Senior Men’s team, with a couple of vets and juniors thrown in, performed with credit to produce our best team performance in this event for several years by finishing in 4th. Paul Jégou, fresh from Danger Mouse duty, returned to more suitable attire and, in doing so, was the fastest Harrier of the day in 18:01 closely followed by a certain Jason Cooke in 18:06, he of 2010 Club Road Race Championship aspirations! It was pleasing to see two of our Juniors, Alex Mills and Anthony Holmes stepping up to the plate by running for the seniors and performing with credit.

top < British 56lb Championships – Stoke–on–Trent ~ Saturday, 17 April 2010

While most of his clubmates were otherwise engaged in the Oxfordshire County Road Relays at Hook Norton, Richard Jégou made the journey north to Stoke–on–Trent to defend his British 56lb throws title. Unusually for Stoke the weather was exceptionally warm.

As last year Richard was throwing 28lb weights – they take pity on the over 60s competitors – and after four events Richard’s running total was exactly the same as at the same stage last year. In the final event of the series, the Throw for Height competition, Richard’s best throw made a huge improvement on last year which also beat the British record. Richard also beat his own British record in the Putt as well as setting new British bests for the Weight Triathlon and Weight Pentathlon totals.

top < 28th White Horse Half Marathon – Grove ~ Sunday, 11 April 2010

After all the bad weather we have experienced over the past few months it was a relief for both the organisers and the athletes to get some decent conditions for annual White Horse Half Marathon. With it being dry and mostly sunny, if not warm, the conditions could not have been better.

This year the overall race winner was Paul Frenandez (Abingdon Amblers AC) who overhauled Stephen Male (Oxford City AC) in the final sprint to the line to take the title for the first time coming home in a time of 1:12:39. Third place went to Gary Harris (Headington Road Runners).

The ladies were lead home by Jude Craft (Headington Road Runners) who recorded a convincing victory in a time of 1:20:55, breaking the Oxfordshire County Half Marathon record in the process, to finish in 19th position overall. The second–placed lady was Sophie Carter (Kidlington R&AC) who held off the challenge of Emma–Kate Lidbury (Unattached) finishing in 41st and 42nd places respectively.

Despite the commitment to provide marshals and helpers for the race the Harriers still managed to produce a small contingent of athletes to compete this year. There were some impressive results as well!

The first White Horse Harrier athlete across the line was John Peake who finished in 19th place overall smashing his personal best for the distance in the process. The second Harrier to cross the line was Paul “Danger Mouse” Jégou in full cartoon character garb grabbing 30th place overall much to the delight of the onlooking crowd! Stephen Casey was the next Harrier home just dipping under the 1:30:00 barrier for the first time in 60th position, followed by David Roberts (81st) and Lucia Singer (129th).

Stalwart of the club, Jeremy Smeddle, celebrated his 50th half marathon by finishing in 186th position overall. This was an impressive achievement by a member who has regularly turned out for the club both in cross country and road race fixtures. The last of our contingent, Neil McColl, completed the course in exactly two hours to secure 339th place.

top < Compton 20 Downland Challenge – Downs School, Compton, Newbury. ~ Saturday, 3 April 2010

Three of our brave Harriers, Paul Jégou, Clare Hazell and Jan McCabe stepped up to the plate in Saturday’s Compton Challenge 20 miles multi–terrain race. Paul recording his second race win in seven days with an outstanding performance, with Clare showing further endurance progress in her London Marathon preparations in 101st position and a solid performance from Jan in 130th position. The Challenge certainly lived up to its title – the going was heavy underfoot and extremely slippery.

Paul soon established an early lead but a wrong turning resulted in going off course, running an extra mile and finding himself back in tenth place, over five minutes behind the leaders. Paul seems to be developing a habit of going off piste during such races, maybe a more studious approach to navigation is needed! He does own a GPS! This mistake occured before halfway, giving time for Paul to set about reeling in the runners ahead of him. With four and a half miles to go the gap was down to just over two minutes with only two runners ahead. A determined effort in the final stages brought its reward with Paul winning almost a minute ahead of the second placed runner, David Spencer (Army Athletics).

top < Maidenhead Easter 10 – Maidenhead ~ Friday, 2 April 2010

The Maidenhead Easter 10 is described as a fast, flat multi–terrain course (– albeit the majority of the race is on the road) starting and finishing in the Maidenhead Office Park which the runners have to loop round at the beginning of the race. This race has grown rapidly since its inception and continues to be a popular well–organised and friendly event.

This year the overall race winner was John Hutchins (Basingstoke & Mid–Hants AC) who crossed the line in a new course record time of 0:51:17. Anuradma Cooray (Vale of Aylesbury AC), last year’s winner had to settle for 2nd place just six seconds adrift with Nicholas Cope (Unattached) in 3rd place. The first female finisher for the third successive year was Sarah Gee (Reading Road Runners) who finished over three minutes ahead of her closest rival to secure 35th place overall improving on her previous winning times crossing the line in 0:57:21. Melissa Neal (March AC) was the second lady home (73rd overall) followed by Sarah Urwin–Mann taking the third podium spot (92nd overall).

Dan Peace turned out for the White Horse Harriers this year using the race as part of his final preparations for this year’s Virgin London Marathon. Dan produced a solid performance to cross the finishing line in 87th position out of the 1,055 finishers. Well done Dan and good luck on Sunday, 25 April.

top < Richard Burton 10k – Cwmafan, West Glamorgan ~ Sunday, 28 March 2010

This event has been associated with its famous local namesake for the past 25 years after the race’s initial inception to raise funds for a local family who had lost loved ones in a car crash. The actor died two years after his first involvement with the race. Sally Burton, the late actor’s wife, subsequently became the president of the race.

The sole Harrier representative in this year’s race was Nick Portsmouth. This must have been a race that fitted neatly into Nick’s heavy Welsh choral schedule. Our star chorister produced a solid performance to finish in 160th place overall.

The overall, runaway winner of this year’s event was Matt Bowser (Lincoln Wellington) who finished three quarters of a minute ahead of his closest rival. Matt secured his victory with a time of 30:38. Teammates Marc Hobbs (Swansea Harriers) and Craig Hopkins (Swansea Harriers) finished within a couple of seconds of each other to claim 2d and 3rd places respectively. The first lady finisher home was Rebecca Randall (Bristol & West) recording a time of 36:15 to finish in 20th place overall. Anne Marie Hutchinson (Neath Harriers) and Kate Roberts (Bridgend) were the second– and third–placed women finishing in 31st and 45th positions overall respectively.

The 20th running of the Cleevewold 14 took place on Sunday. This is a tough, 14–mile multi–terrain race on trails and through ancient woodland with plenty of mud, hills and wildlife. The stunning views into Wales make this also a very scenic event.

Following on from Paul Jégou’s exploits last year Stewart Scott was our representative in the 2010 incarnation. Stewart produced a solid performance on the day to cross the line in 61st place overall.

The outright winner of this year’s race was Philip Gould (Kenilworth Runners) who finished over two and a half minutes clear of his nearest challenger crossing the line a time of 01:39:51. The first female finisher across the line was Frances Burge (Headington Road Runners) almost ten minutes clear of the second–placed lady recording a time of 02:02:20 to secure 32nd place overall.

Almost perfect running conditions greeted club stalwarts Paul Jégou and John Peake for the final round of the Wessex Cross Country League held at the beautiful Avon Heath Country Park near Ringwood on Sunday.

It would be fair to say Paul and John saved what must be considered to be their best performances of this season for the all important Championship decider. Both Paul and John were within striking distance of winning their respective Championship categories, they certainly didn't disappoint with Paul winning the race outright after a real tussle with Nathan Young of Mendip A.C. by a margin of only 2 seconds! John had a less frenetic finish in 7th almost 2 minutes clear of his nearest M40 rival. Paul retains his title as Senior Mens Champion with John stepping up to the plate to become M40-44 Champion.

This event is traditionally the official warm–up race for the London Marathon. The relatively flat 13.1 mile course is run around the world famous F1 circuit, and is felt by many to be ideal preparation for London. As usual the event drew a large field of some 5,750 entrants.

Conditions were ideal both for the runners and the many spectators who witnessed some intermittent sunshine mixed in with the general cloud. With the temperatures at around 7 degrees the north westerly wind would prove troublesome in the more exposed areas of the course. This year the White Horse Harriers had two representatives in the race – Brett Falcus and Nick Portsmouth. Brett lead the way home crossing the line 605th place overall with Nick completing the course in 2,550th position overall.

The overall winner of this year’s race was Toby Lambert (Winchester & District AC) recording a time of 01:07:26 ahead of the V40 athlete Darren Bilton (Leeds City AC) who claimed 2nd place overall. Liz Yelling (Bedford & County) secured 3rd place overall in only her second appearance since giving birth to her first child last year to claim the ladies’ title. The first round of the 2010 Club Road Race Championships took place at Spiceball Park, Banbury on Sunday, 14 March and the usual contingent of male Harrier protagonists turned out to fly the flag. It was a shame we had no lady representatives.

The course – an outward couple of miles to just beyond the M40 motorway followed by an 11–mile loop through the undulating and picturesque North Oxfordshire countryside before returning to the start/finish area – provided a stiff challenge to all the athletes. Thankfully the weather conditions were some of the best we have had so far this year with only a cold wind to contend with on the more exposed stretches of the course.

Paul Jégou lead our Harriers over the line finishing in 17th position overall with Jason “The Pretender” Cooke, our next Harrier home, in close attendance having to settle for 19th position. John Peake was next Harrier finishing in a very creditable 34th place overall ahead of Graham Wiggins who secured 197th place overall. Dene Stringfellow and Jeremy Smeddle completed the lineup of our finishers crossing the line in 224th and 240th positions respectively.

The overall winner of the race was Sullivan Smith (Swansea Harriers AC) in a time of 1:21:44 and in doing so shattered the course record by well over a minute. Sophie Carter (Kidlington R&AC) was the first female finisher home recording a time of 1:41:24 finishing in 44th position overall.

top < Teddy Hall Relays – Oxford ~ Wednesday, 10 March 2010

A bitterly cold afternoon greeted the athletes for the annual running of the Teddy Hall Relays staged at the Iffley Road Stadium in Oxford. Despite this the event was once again well–supported by both the universities and colleges as well as local clubs. This year we fielded four teams – one ladies’ and three men’s teams – looking to continue our recent successes in the event.

Our ladies performed creditably to secure 9th place out of a total of 24 competing teams in the team section for ladies. As far as the men’s teams were concerned our ‘A’ team performed commendably to finish in 17th position having had to suffer some last’minute team adjustments. Our ‘B’ team also performed well to finish in 42nd position and the ‘C’ rounded off our results with 74th place out of a total of 81 competing men’s teams.

The fastest White Horse Harrier performance of the day for the ladies was Lucia Singer who recorded a time of 24:43 for her leg which placed her 36th in the overall ladies individual standings. For the men Paul Jégou anchored the men’s ‘A’ string with a time of 19:35 which earned him 62nd place in the overall men’s standings.

top < Bath Half Marathon – Bath ~ Sunday, 7 March 2010

Now in its 29th year, the Bath Half Marathon is one of the biggest fundraising events in the South West; raising £1.3million in 2009.

Chilly conditions failed to discourage almost 11,000 runners from competing in the Bath Half Marathon. Bright sunshine lit up the sandstone of Great Pulteney Street as the nation’s darling, and home grown hero, Amy Williams sounded the horn to set the runners off at 11:00am. Just over an hour later, the men’s race was won by Ezekiel Cheruop from Kenya in 63:03, with Ethiopian born Salford runner Thomas Abyu in second place. Third place belonged to 2009’s winner Simon Tonui, also from Kenya.

Great Britain Olympian Dan Robinson came in fourth place in a time of 64:43. Victory in the women’s race went to 38 year old Stoke runner Michelle Ross–Cope who completed the 13.1 mile course in 72.07. Hot on her heels was Leeds runner Susan Partridge, with last year’s winner, Kenyan Joyce Kandie claiming third place.

Our very own Tim Hughes once again put in a fine performance finishing in a very creditable 102nd position. Lorimer Fellingham (1,494th) and Jan McCabe (4,819th) rounded off the other Harriers finishers in this year’s event.

top < Oxford Mail Cross Country League Round 5 – Horspath ~ Sunday, 7 March 2010

The fifth and final round of the Oxford Mail Cross Country League took place on Sunday 7th March at Horspath Stadium, Oxford. A good number of White Horse Harriers took full advantage of the sunny, if a little chilly, conditions to produce a number of strong performances throughout the various age categories.

Sinead Webb was the first home of our Harriers in the opening Under 11 Girls race finishing in a solid 26th position. In the next race Okan Onay performed very well to secure 5th place in the Under 11 Boys. Next up Josephine Harrison was first Harrier home finishing in a creditable 12th place in the Under 13 Girls race, helping to secure the team’s 6th position in the division for the five–race series. In the Under 13 Boys Ben Claridge produced a strong performance to finish in 9th positon, helping to secure 5th placed team in the division.

Bethan Murphy–Hand led home the Harriers in the Under 15/17 Girls race in 9th position with Sophie Lloyd closely following in 11th helping the Team to secure an excellent 2nd place overall in the Division. Our next competitors were the Under 15/17 Boys, this is an increasingly competitive group with our own Harriers providing their own race within a race! Honours go this time to Mitch Lomas for finishing in an excellent 9th position helping to secure 4th position for our team in the division. The Senior and Veteran Men then competed, with another strong performance from Paul Jégou leading the way home in 14th position, despite the team’s best efforts relegation to Division 2 beckons for next Season.

The last race of the day was for our Senior and Veteran Ladies with Sheila Bailey producing a fine performance to finish in 46th place and in doing so secured a popular victory in the Veteran Ladies 55 age group for the series. This was a fitting finalé for Sheila’s last ever cross country race and to mark this landmark occasion Sheila even baked a fine cake for us all to share after the race! Sheila will be greatly missed at such races in the future. Your fellow Harriers thank you from the bottom of their hearts for your endeavours over the years – representing us so successfully and in all weathers! Enjoy your retirement from cross country!

top < Goring 10k – Goring ~ Sunday, 28 February 2010

What is it with the weather at the moment? Another wet, windy and rainy day greeted three of our determined Harriers at the Goring 10k. The course is undulating with a challenging uphill start and mainly on road but does have its fair share of tracks and pathways which were quite slippy in areas, as John Peake was to discover!

Although a challenging day that tested our three Harriers, especially on the muddy tracks and more exposed areas of the course, they performed with credit. John, despite a head over heels slip at halfway and several superficial injuries to hand, arm and backside, managed a respectable 17th position overall. George and Joanne Smith had a good run out finishing together in 663rd and 664th positions respectively in a huge field of runners.

This year’s event was won by Michael Osborne (Oxford University Cross Country Club) who crossed the line in a time of 34:09 in a closely contested race ahead of Oz Ellis (Royal Air Force) and Matt Hawcroft (Oxford University AC) who finished in 2nd and 3rd places respectively. Samantha Amend (Belgrave Harriers) took the ladies title leading the ladies home in a time of 38:52 and finishing in 20th position overall. Alison Bird (Reading Road Runners) was the second lady across the line in 60th position overall with Kay Walsha (Unattached) 24 seconds adrift in 67th position overall securing 3rd place.

top < The Terminator – Pewsey, Wiltshire ~ Sunday, 28 February 2010

The Terminator is an event organised and hosted by Pewsey Vale Running Club and is certainly not one for the faint–hearted! The course is described as mostly off–road following footpaths, lanes and bridleways. For a flavour of the delights awaiting the runner in this event the full course description is available in the Club & Team Events section where there is also a link to the event’s webpage.

A smaller team, than in recent years, of three Harriers made the treck to Pewsey to take up the arduous challenge of The Terminator. Paul Jégou finished in an excellent 10th position to record his best place finish in the event to date. Lucia Singer crossed the line in a creditable 139th (5th lady overall). Unfortunately, after a conservative start to this year’s race, Lucia just failed to repeat her perfomance of last year – finishing just outside the prizes in 4th place in the V35 Ladies category. Dene Stringfellow completed the Harrier lineup in 257th, agonisingly close to breaking the two hour barrier for this severe test of stamina.

The overall race winner this year was Matthew West (Winchester & District AC) who completed the course in a time of 01:22:02 crossing the line over 30 seconds clear of his closest rival. Gavin Pritchard (Unattached) and Robert Hicks (Town & Country Harriers) secured 2nd and 3rd places respectively. The first lady home was Annie Baumber (Bracknell Forest Runners) who finished in 55th position overall with comfortable margin of victory of in excess of 6 minutes over her nearest rival recording a time of 01:37:16. Lorraine Ryan (Gloucester AC) and Nikki Morgan (Chepstow Harriers) crossed the line in 88th and 129th positions overall to secure 2nd and 3rd places respectively in the ladies’ event.

The 134th running of the National Cross Country Championships took place at Roundhay Park, Leeds on Saturday. Cold, muddy and hilly conditions were the order of the day for this event, returning to the north Yorkshire city for the first time since 2004.

Just two of our keen Harriers made the long trip up to Leeds to compete in the National Cross Country Championships this year. The long journey was well worth the effort with an excellent 132nd place for the rapidly improving Mitch Lomas in the Under 15 Boys category and another solid performance from club stalwart Graham Wiggins who crossed the line 1,133rd place in the Senior Men’s event.

The winner of the senior men’s title, following up his victory in the British Universities & Colleges Sport Cross Country Championships at the beginning of February, was Andy Vernon (Aldershot Farnham & District AC) who produced a dominant display in recording a time of 38:01 ahead of Moumin Geele (Newham & Essex Beagles) and Steven Vernon (Stockport Harriers & AC) who finished in 2nd and 3rd places respectively. Another day of rather unsettled weather was the reward for our two keen Harriers who endured a somewhat epic journey to the farthest flung of this years Wessex Cross Country League Fixtures at Ham Hill, North West of Yeovil.

The long journey was worth all the effort as both representatives of White Horse Harriers, Paul Jégou and John Peake, produced stellar performances to capture 2nd and 6th places respectively, with Paul winning the Senior Mens section in Round 4 of this League.

top < MMTG Throws Competition – Stoke–on–Trent ~ Saturday, 20 February 2010

In his second outdoor event of the year Richard Jégou found himself making the tedious journey to Stoke on Trent aka Jason Cookland. This was for one of the MMTG wackier promotions with a Heavy Weight Triathlon and LSW Strongest Man Light Competition. You would not believe the weights involved in the Heavy! Five centimetres of snow covered the ground but mercifully the run ups and circles had been cleared. There were five contestants in his age group M60–69 and was happy to win both competitions.

The first event was his favourite, hurling the Heavy Weight into a sandpit using the run up and shot putt technique, producing the furthest throw in any age group of 5.91m with a 35lb or 16.88kg implement, just missing the British Record by a mere 3cm. Richard then won the Greek Discus with a throw of 22.02m which involves a standing throw with a heavy discus achieving a British Record. Richard also threw the 28lb Heavy Hammer 9.24m. The points score for these three events resulted in a new British Record total.

The Heavy Weight Triathlon was a much closer affair whereby three different weights of heavy hammer 5kg, 7.5kg, 10kg, are thrown and the distances are added together. Richard’s total distance of 45.49m was just enough to secure first place with the next three competitors recording 44.31m, 44.27m and 44.14m respectively. Throws are allowed using either one or two hands but Richard’s ploy of using only one hand almost came unstuck when he recorded two no–throws with the heaviest weight.

Dene worked hard marking out the course on his own, thanks Dene for all your hard work it enabled the event to start on time. top < Chiltern Cross Country League Round 5 – Cottesloe School – Wing ~ Saturday, 13 February 2010

A rather forbidding sky threatened the masses gathered underneath for the final round of the Chiltern Cross Country League. The start and finish area of the course is on top of a somewhat exposed hill and is at the mercy of the elements. The unsettled weather finally unleashed a rather chilly, wintry shower several minutes before the men’s race started.

Fortunately for our two Harrier stawarts, Paul Jégou and John Peake, our only club representatives on the day, the race was soon underway! Conditions were certainly testing but fair, a challenging 3 laps over undulating terrain and hock deep mud through the numerous farm gate entrances! Much to John’s dismay there was a rather stiff uphill climb to the finish, it should be noted, however, that John rallied quite strongly here and overtook several competitors up the hill, he must be getting fit!?!

Honours of the day go to Paul Jégou for an excellent run in the men’s race securing 24th place in the combined divisions overall, 6th in Division 2, this gave Paul 3rd placed Senior Man in Division 2 for the full series.

The South of England Cross Country Championships returned to Parliament Hill Fields in London on Saturday. These annual championships present our more serious athletes with the opportunity to pit themselves against the best of their peers in Southern England, and thereby provide the benchmark against which progress and development can be assessed.

The 2010 installment of these championships was blessed with bright sunshine on the day which did much to raise the spirits despite the sharp chill in the air – a legacy no doubt of the recent icy conditions that have blanketed the country. Unfortunately the Harrier contingent was somewhat diminished compared to last year at Hillingdon where we enjoyed a good level of representation in the majority of the events.

The pick of the performances on the day were provided by Bethan Murphy–Hand and Sophie Lloyd who both posted finishes well inside the top one hundred of their respective events. Bethan crossed the line to secure 57th place in the Under 17 Women category, whilst Sophie claimed 66th position in the Under 15 Girls category. Our other young athletes, Josie Harrison (Under 13 Girls) and Alex Mills (Under 17 Men), also achieved finishes in the top 150 of their respective categories.

top < Oxfordshire Cross Country Championships – Upton Lodge, Middleton Cheney ~ Sunday, 24 January 2010

This years Oxfordshire Cross Country Championships were, following earlier postponement due to heavy snow, finally held on Sunday 24 January at Upton Lodge near Middleton Cheney, Banbury. Conditions were, in contrast to predicted weather forcasts, reasonably sunny but with a noticeable chill on the wind, especially at the top of the hill. It would be fair to say that competitor numbers overall were dramatically lower than in recent years and our team was similarly affected.

White Horse Harrier competitors, nonetheless, produced some very creditable performances. Mitch Lomas with County Bronze Medal in the U15 Boys, Chris Gillespie with Silver in the Senior Mens, Tim Hughes with Gold in the V50 Mens and an excellent performance from our Senior Mens team of Chris Gillespie, Paul Jégou, Dan New and Graham Wiggins on winning County Gold by outscoring arch rivals Woodstock Harriers.

In addition, Frances Briscoe, running under her first claim colours of Coventry Godiva Harriers, secured gold with a comfortable victory in Senior Women’s category crossing the line over 40 seconds clear of her nearest rival.

top < Highworth Team Half Marathon – Highworth ~ Sunday, 17 January 2010

The Highworth Half Marathon is an invitation team event that takes place largely along country lanes and through the quiet country villages of Hannington, Kempsford and Castle Eaton with the first 5 runners home to score (– which must include a lady).

This year our team was led home by Paul Jégou who finished in 4th position with Tim Hughes in hot pursuit in 5th, Jason Cooke and Dan Peace filled 24th and 25th places respectively. John Peake was certain to improve on last year’s debacle in this event and knocked some 15 minutes off that time achieving 31st place. Lucia Singer was our first lady finish in 78th.

The first male finisher across the line was again Gary O’Brien (Swindon Harriers) defending his title from last year who finished in an improved time of 1:14:32 and the first lady to complete the course was Steph Lane of Bourton Road Runners who recorded a time of 1:21:42. The team event was again won by Bourton Road Runners – all their counting runners coming in under the 1:27:33 mark – just holding off Woodstock Harriers with a 17–point advantage. White Horse Harriers finished in a creditable 4th place out of the qualifying 13 teams.

top < Chiltern Cross Country League Round 4 – Shuttleworth Park ~ Saturday, 16 January 2010

The penultimate race of the 2009/10 Chiltern Cross Country League series took place at Shuttleworth Park, Biggleswade in Bedfordshire on Saturday. With Oxfordshire still sitting under the clouds and rain after the overnight deluge that pretty well eradicated all trace of the snow and ice which had gripped the county over the past week or so, things were looking a little more promising as our contingent travelled east.

The representatives for the White Horse Harriers on this occasion were Paul Jégou and Dene Stringfellow. This was the first time the Shuttleworth Park venue had been used in the Chiltern Cross Country League for some time. The setting for the event was picturesque and the course was pleasantly reminiscent of the Oxford Mail League courses that our members know and love! Surprisingly, the underfoot conditions were not as wet as expected and the ground didn’t seem to have cut up too badly by the time the men’s event got under way. There was however a cold snap in the air and some areas of the course remained hard under foot.

Paul Jégou had a very satisfying performance over the demanding course to finish in 21st position overall – the second Oxfordshire-based athlete across the line. Dene Stringfellow was disappointed with his performance crossing line in 217th position, just losing out in a final sprint to the line with his closest competitor.

Darren Deed (Bedford & County) followed up his win in the second round at Wigmore Valley with another convincing victory here in the men’s race finishing well over a minute clear of his nearest rivals recording a time of 25:17. Tom Comerford (Milton Keynes) was next across the line finishing 10 seconds clear of an unnamed athlete (Shaftesbury Harriers). In the ladies’ race Nicola Sykes (Bedford & County) followed up her single win and two second places of the previous rounds with another victory here. Nicola held off her two team mates Rachel Gibbs (Bedford & County) and Rebecca Newstead (Bedford & County) in a closely fought race to record her success with a time of 19:33.

top < Oxford Mail Cross Country League Round 3 – Banbury ~ Sunday, 3 January 2010

A fine winters morning of near freezing temperatures but unbroken sunshine provided the setting for the 3rd round of The Oxford Mail Cross Country League held at The North Oxfordshire Academy in Banbury. The usual stalwarts, bolstered by several debutants, ran with credit over a challenging course that provided a stern test of fitness!

Congratulations to Tim Traynor on winning the senior men’s race so convincingly, an excellent performance! It would be great if we could see more of our athletes at these events, they really are an excellent way to improve stamina for the forthcoming summer road race season! Why not try one?
